the price of firewood.

bloody hell. looking at around 120 - 140 per metre for redgum and 110 - 120 per metre for bluegum stuff.

love the open fire, but it's becoming a luxury at these prices.

Yeah I go cut my own, usually stringy bark though, or whatever is felled, and will buy a load of Redgum and mix it in with what I have cut. Redgum does burn nice and hot though.

Try the degreaser from Supercheap, neat and let it soak for say an hour then high pressure nozzle setting on a garden hose. I find it removes justabout anything, diesel, engine oil or gearbox oil. You may need to do a second dose depending on how 'light coloured' the concrete is. What we use on oil saturated concrete floor is a solvent washed down then applied with a hydrochloric acid 20%, the degreaser soaks in and dilutes the oil, then the acid tends to break the cement down a littie that further releases more oil - the acid attacks the concrete, not the oil. Finally we wash with a final coat of degrease and water, and the concrete is good as new and able to receive a good etch primer. The concrete attack is very light, wont affect the driveway in any way from a strength perspective.

not angry but..

was just thinking about when we were up in darwin last year, the AC gave out. the AC pipe that runs to rear of the wagon had vibrated so much it had fractured and all the gas was getting out.

took it to a auto sparky in darwin for fixage. he just bagged out the patrol, saying they're no good, the only thing that lasts up there are toyotas. strange thing to say as his workshop was full of toyotas waiting to be repaired.

he didn't know what we'd taken the trol over or through before it had visited his shop, he saw something broken and just concluded the entire vehicle was shite.

funny what pops into your head when you're filling in time for 5pm.

Turns out they delivered it to some one else, who got home from work and found it sitting on their veranda. FFS meat milk etc sitting in the sun for over an hour and a half.

How the hell does modern society actually function with so many stuff ups?

Flew back from site last monday, airline baggage handlers 'lost' my bag between plane and carousel. Pissing down rain etc. I had two more flights to catch to get home, so after reporting the missing bag was assured it would be sent to my home address, just common practice with every other time an airline loses your bag. Well, this airline and their contracted baggage handlers have a different policy - bad luck, you can pay to get it from Townsville to home in Melb or it can sit is townsville. Ended up the supervisor in TSV sent the bag to melb by Jetstar. I got a call from Jetstar to pick the bag up. Well the deal is it is to delivered to me - the source company lost it. Their responsibility i would have thought. Nope, 3 days back and forth, hours on the phone, then getting hung up on, ended up picking it up myself. Got the bag to the car and it was saturated, water inside it even - must have been left in the rain for ages - no come back on the airline, baggage handlers and the company's dont give a shit. Customer service is a thing of the past. All 3 businesses have no phone contact , one has a call message from an unmanned or monitored voicemail mailbox, totally pathetic that a simple issue could not be resolved responsibly.

Definitely not being over dramatic, from what my parents went through I was bought up with a strong work ethic.

Never took a ‘sickie’ in my working life, if I was actually sick I always had a doctors certificate. Always had a holiday job as a kid and worked picking spuds or hay carting on weekends when I had a full time job. I paid board when living at home and so did my kids. All my kids had part time jobs and are all working at good jobs now. Glad to say the two eldest grandkids also had part time jobs and now have apprenticeships.

Very angry at my self more than anything. I never ever ever ever take any of our cars to one of them hand wash places.
But a few days ago at local Westfield it got the better of me. Thought i'll get them to give it a quick wash while I duck into the shops. Especially underneath as it was going to the mechanics for brakes the following day. First hurdle was a language barrier.
1st mistake. I didn't drive away.
Got a text 20 minutes later the car is ready. When I got there 3-4 of them are standing around the car scratching their heads. "Your paint looks like oxidized and we cant get rid of it" is what I got told... Car looked washed but it had faint dark blotches and water streaks all around, when looked at from a certain angle. I've never seen anything like it before. Even the black trims around the car had weird swirls and streaks. So I said can you wash it again to get rid of it , to a reply that they already had a go... They showed no interest in discussing what happened and what to do as they had a full line of other poor sob's cars to attend.
2nd mistake. I drove away.
When I got home it all dried out but the damage remained. No matter what I attacked it with in terms of car cleaning I had at home, nothing was coming off.
And because everything was dry I now noticed that panels seem dull. Car didn't have that bit of shine it had prior. Even the mechanics doing the brakes day after asked wtf happened to the panels.
Neighbour owns a panel and detailing shop so I drove there straight up and he knew from word go what happened. The mofos used a very harsh non PH neutral wash. It literally ate all the remaining wax away and then began eating the black trims around the car hence why it all ended up all over the panels. He demonstrated it on some old white panels he had around the shop. What took some of the dark swirls off was surprisingly spraying some CRC onto it.
It now needs a serious cut 'n polish, clean up and wax job to more so protect the paint rather then make it look shiny again. It kind of needed it anyway, but not to this extend and not because of this reason.
Car is 17 years old and gets used and dirty, the paint was not perfect but now it just looks like s#it until fixed. At least it'll get a freshen up and looks the goods once more on a positive.
Was very hard to take proper photos on a white car to show exactly whats going on. But pics give a rough idea.

Can't really tell in the pics..... Get some iso-propyl alcohol and mix 50/50 with water then wipe all over the panels to remove any shit they would have left behind.
Then a good wash and you will have to spend half a day on a polisher to get the shine back. Good cover of wax, spray sealant and never use a car wash again.

Completely understand now why interstate truck drivers are seriously disenchanted with cars whilst they’re working under power limitations when safely need more grunt at times [emoji22]
Absolutely impossible to get past a fluctuating speed Muppet even down hill or overtaking lanes uphill with such hindrance’s built in to modern trucks [emoji35]
I get that it may have been brought in for wild speed demons of old but it appears to have gone too far techy dangerous in the wrong direction now IMHO.
Understandably manufacturers won’t turn back now on ADR import requirements, maybe it’s time to educate all other road users of common courtesy/conscious road use [emoji848][emoji120][emoji120]

Daughter went back to work for a government agency 2 days a week from home. They supplied a brand new latest generation desktop, desk, chair and light. This was before the election. Has not worked a minute since it arrived 3 weeks ago. Today, a courier turned up at her place with replacement hardware, but this time a top end laptop only. She signed for the parcel and opened it up to see what was in there. Astounded, she rang her employer to find out what was going on - the answer will astound you - Its a change of government, here is the new hardware from their budget to the agency - what do I do with the other computer - keep it, its from the 'old' government - like who do these clowns think funds the 'old and new governments' - what a total waste of our money, and not a thought of conscience enters into these numpty's heads.

That’s fucking amazing actually and sums up our future!

Enjoy Australia!

My sister works for a government department(Dept social services) and the last two years been doing bugger all, because her manager/supervisor is too afraid to ask for more jobs to do to make themselves useful as it may draw attention to the fact they don't have enough to do and then be made redundant. unfortunately I think it's an attitude like this that is systemic within the public service, regardless of the governing party. The ministers can't be expected manage the tens thousands of people under their title, and unfortunately the people below them just do the bare minimum to receive their salary each week. How to you fix a system that is so deeply broken...

Company I worked for used to outsource IT services and equipment to both federal and state government departments and I can tell you that any hardware refresh would be a minimum of twelve plus months lead time. Procurement policies in the Federal Government are extremely stringent. I can guarantee that nothing gets by without due diligence and a cost benefit analysis. Most of the hardware is actually owned by the outsourcing companies and fully accounted for.
Now pork barrelling is a whole different kettle of smelly fish, easy to promise swimming pools, carparks etc. Just don’t expect them to ever be built.

Drove up the easy trails of Tallarook and parts of Mt Dissa quickly with my boy today. Warmed up the hubs and low range in a few spots but nothing dramatic worthy of reporting. Fresh mountain forest air and views until next month.

But the rubbish everywhere is unreal!
Mark these words, council, or whatever power management above, putting concrete barriers around every one of these places, is inevitable. It's not your average daily or camper visitor 4x4 weekend warrior variety type rubbish. Fair chunk was your annual tip run type sort of stuff.
Rubble, linen, PC monitors, baby prams, stolen commondoors, burnt cars with police tape everywhere! One of the "low range" tracks there was a full set of Evap air con unit pads thrown to the side...
I drive up these woods 10 or so times a year. I reckon I've seen more shit up there in the last 12 months than I have , in the last 12 years put together...

That, right there.

Not only unfortunately in the bush but also happens on spare blocks throughout suburbia. And yes all to do with council rip off tip rates. Sure, I understand the councils have EPA landfill fees to pay, but this is state government charging local government another way to onforward another tax hit down to the layman. Is there any wonder why people dump shit? I dont, but what I do is cut up my waste whatever it may be into bits that fit in my council bin. Could be an old desk, a shitty mattress etc, it goes into landfill bit by bit through my annual rate-paid bin fees.

Rich lucky neighbour down the road just got pinned on second inspection of his new $100k Lotto pool installation, fences were 1800mm around all external points as originally site inspection demanded.
The rules have changed since apparently, also needs to be 1,800mm surrounds within too [emoji848]

Nillumdick! I like that. But this is a grubbernment enforced thing and the council is just taking the Mickey out of us now. We had to pay the council first to register the pool, even though they know it’s there and even gave me the original plans ( had to pay $90)to the house when it was built and the plans and permits for the pool when it was put in were with it.
Yeah the rules we have to abide by are laughable too. But we have no choice so we have to abide and pay. Every four years. It’s more the bill from the inspector that got me for the barely five minutes he was here. I’m seriously in the wrong industry.

rusty-Nail sorted out our pool protection system, and to be honest its money well spent knowing the barriers are compliant, working and reliable. Better than fronting up to the coroners court because your safety element wasn't working correctly and wasn't fit for what it was there for. Sure, $400 for the 'ticket' might seem excessive, and it probably is, however you can at least be sure you have met the standard required, just now maintain it and the next 4 years will be stress free in that area.

Agreed. 100%. I want it to be safe. My main gripe is the cost for five minutes of work. Paying the council to register for something they already have in their system, absolute rort! And some of the things we had to do to be compliant, even the fence builders were saying its gone too far.

Then you drive through the rural areas, there a place close to me which has a dam maybe 20 metres from the house. Why no fence around that? Or around any dam?

Dams on rural properties are a real mystery. I know that a high proportion of drownings each year with kids are in dams. i dont understand why there isn't some protection apart from the complexity of trying to possibly keep access open to livestock. I know when we put the dam in for Wiseleigh it will be fence. I know when the assessor came around he clipped me on a couple of things and they were then fixed. the biggest one was a window that opened into the pool area. It was not allowed to open more than 80mm - apparently this is the standard for minimum gap that a child can squeeze thru, and its opening into an enclosed alcove as well that the child has to first enter the pool area to access - sounds crazy, very low risk of access, but they are the rules, so now i have a restraining chain on the window to stop it opening beyond 75mm, all compliant, Tick, see you in 4 yrs.

I decided to take a course of hypnotherapy in my case. Plus Physical exercise helps to counteract the withdrawal, inactivity and feelings of hopelessness that characterize depression. Studies show that both aerobic and anaerobic exercise (exercise which does not require oxygen, such as weightlifting) have anti-depressive effects.

I like to take drugs, not only they give me hypnotherapy effect but the best bit is the hallucinogenic effect which makes me spin right out.
Studies have shown this in fact improves brain function.

Yeah it's a total disgrace that councils charge for green waste. I've got a heap on the ground at home I'm putting in every fortnight into the green bin instead of paying $$ to take it to the transfer station. Bloody hell they on-sell the green waste for compost, etc too, so people have to pay them to donate the material, they value-add it by chucking it through a mulcher, and then charge for people again to take the mulch away! What a business model!! Fair dinkum it's no wonder people dump stuff everywhere.

What a business model!! Fair dinkum it's no wonder people dump stuff everywhere. And if you want it loaded they'll charge you for the diesel too..

True story, was working in China pre Covid and asked:

Q: “Why a lot of horrible smog ridden cities were banning them?”

A: “You can’t hear them coming up behind you on the footpaths or roads and people were getting seriously injured”

Q2: “What about Spockie Dockies or the Ace of Spades playing card and a clothes peg”

We've had several ended up thrown / landed from hi-rises on top of HV mains over the past few times.
Scooter engineers did not forsee scooter and in-built Lithium battery meet 22,000V AC. Did not end well for scooter and/or bunch of customers freezing with no juice to crank the heaters up with.
Money in my pocket, thank you kindly Mr. bored teenager .

Every time I see an adult riding an E-scooter on the footpath I wish I was standing right in front to coat hanger the arsewipe. Fkn muppets on their toys riding through innocent old people fkn boils me bad. There comes a time when people need to just grow up and become adults and respect other peoples' safety. Ride them on the roads where I can at least aim for you (safely of course)!

Haha bicycles, famously invented by Michelangelo during a holiday to in the Nether regions to power their windmills on still days. Only then to be converted to juvenile transport vehicles by smashed-avo-eating bearded coffee-drinking tattooed hipsters trying to piss off us normal bogans innocently burning fossil fuels to go buy durries and fingerless gloves the pricks.

Posting too regularly on this thread, but my council has just splurged on a brick wall to place the town's name on. Over $100,000. I think it was closer to 150,000. FFS. 40 metres away, there is a pothole and 6 inch ridge in the road, at an intersection, and just after the 80k speed reduction!!!
All good:
Step 1 Stare at the immaculate sign on a big wall.

Step 2 hit the road hazard.

Step 3 Die on impact with the huge wall!

Haha, all this anti cyclist anger in this thread. Maybe time for me to come clean and retire.

Being an immigrant from The Netherlands the only transport we had was a push bike. After moving here when I was younger I used to race (unsuccessfully) at the local Velodrome and play Football (soccer) for the Dutch and Polish clubs (again unsuccessfully).
My son is an avid cyclist and has won in competitive competitions, regularly used to do the Round The Bay ride. A training ride for him is 100km.
Actually all my children are pretty competitive (way better than me) , one has 4 gold medals in Athletics at state level.

When I visited The Netherlands some years ago I used to regularly ride 30km each evening, amazed when I came to a round about I got abused by car drivers for slowing down. Totally different attitude there, they know how fragile you are on a push bike.

Now to throw some more fuel on the fire, I’ve just finished watching Tour de France (as I have for many years) and now watching Tour de France Femmes and really enjoying it.

Recently went for a mountain bike ride with the seven year old grandson, I was knackered but it was fun.

And this next bit will probably get me banned, when the eScooters were introduced here I was given a months membership. Brilliant to see Ballarat in the early mornings and balmy evenings. Absolutely loved it, to bloody cold now.

Seriously I do worry for my children and grandchildren while they are out riding, and some of these comments make me even more concerned.

Totally agree with you. I dont mind going for a ride on a MTB. I try to stay on bike tracks and if I am in traffic I keep right out of the way of cars. Not like these lycra clad monkeypox infected take up 2 lanes hell rider idiots. They are the reason those wide caravan towing mirrors were invented. Also, have no probs with e-scooter riders who own their rides. They generally do not have the who gives a fark attitude of someone who has no idea and can hire one that will do nearly 30 kph and dump the farking thing wherever they please including across a footpath or bike lane…Get rid of them asap.

Numerous times I’ve personally had to hit what little gravel there is on the side of the 80kmph highway due to trucks and cars taking evasive action around corners with 2 middle aged crisis men peddling at 5kmph side by side.

Know what you blokes are on about.
Son 43 years old, never had a drivers license, rides the tredly every where. He`s just headed out the door for a short ride today, some 120 Ks. He rides alone, takes bike paths when he can but here in Adelaide there are not to many .
At one time he was working the other side of town, some 50 KS for home . His boss at the time lives only 200 meters from our place. He and the boss would leave home around the same time but my son would be at work 10 to 15 minutes ahead of the boss. Same deal on the home ward trip. He rides over a 100Ks most days either on the road or the fancy indoor jigger. I`m the team car driver when he rides the Bupa challenge (always rides this ride and the occasional interstate charity rides ) Been up his arse on quite a few occasions on these rides and clocked him one time at just on 110KPH.
Back to the bike and scooter stuff . Dosen`t matter what or who, there are idiots out there its just we all have ot take care and NOT get aggressive. Yes I worry a lot when the son is out there especial on the long rides, but he has an app thingy that will phone me and give me co ords if he has a crash. Hopefully it works if things turn to crap.

I understand driver's frustration, but even 30 years ago it was deadly out on the roads as a cyclist. I used to ride into Melbourne and back when living in the burbs. I usually took the bike track, which followed a creek, so was 4 ks longer. I used hand signals for turns and didn't run red lights but even then the absolute elitist attitude from many drivers was appalling. I can see MB side of the coin as living with single lane roads through twisting mountainous country, being clogged with cyclists would be infuriating.

No mate, just old Pearcey no 2. It was on a long steep downhill, he was in the super tuck and all I could see from behind was his arse LOL. Have got it on the Go-pro somewhere. He`s on an electronic program called Strava which takes all your ride details and you compete against others on certain road stretches. They post up every bodies times and if your the quickest ,you own the KOM untill some one breaks it. Also cheating on this program is some what difficult.
He held the KOM on a certain stretch of road close to home,, only a short 1.5 Ks long. his speed was just over 80 KPH BUT he did cheat, Slip streamed a semi. He held that KOM for some six months.
his biggest problem is drivers not indicating when at round abouts, folks don`t seem to use the left rear view mirror
Also, he does ride a bit of flash kit.

FWIW: The Ultimate ‘crapped my dacks’ moment on our little highway was a trucks trailer spare tyre incident.
80kmph myself in the GQ ute, right hand long sweeping corner with Armco guardrails, nowhere to go.
Oncoming unladen Semi-trailer lost its spare from underneath, rear of the trailer jumped up over the spare some 1.0m oncoming left onto my side of the road, still 50m away thankfully.
A guesstimated 60T Modern B Double quarry Professional Hauler was directly behind the Semi and somehow managed to high speed wiggle his own trailer lock ups between the vertical embankment to his left and by that time my GQ ute licking paint off the Armco railing.

So there was a big call out on thr weekend on alot of thr Victorian Rescue pages to help a couple of blokes stuck down track in the Wombat State Forrest....

The bloke posting said his 2 mates had been stuck for 2 days and 1 night and had broken their winch anf were desperate for help. All seems reasonable.

So the location of these 2 cars was published and noted by many that they were actually on Closed Tracks and should not be there in the first place. Everyone basically said, Track Closed, recovery illegal, no insurance, risk a fine. Call a Professional Recovery company because you are on your own... (a little disappointing but I get it) if i was close and my GQ was going I'd have gone and got them no probs.....

Had a similar experience once when a HUGE fire extinguisher felt from a oncoming tanker on a left turn (LHD here). That huge red torpedo coming straight at me and for that couple of seconds I could not decide if I would hit the brakes or go full throttle. The darn thing hit me in between the axles, on the truck belly. Unbelievable. I stopped on the first safe place I found on that twisty road for inspection, and the belly of the truck was scratched and with red paint remains... If that thing had hit one of the axles it would have ripped it out of the chassis no doubt...

Attempted to assist one of our own Patrol brotherhood members several years ago (pretty sure I keyboard vented in this very thread several 10s of pages ago).
On way to work, Patrol on the side, bonnet up, I pulled up to see if he needed a hand perhaps adjusting the needle valve maybe... Was pretty much told to keep on trucking and my my on f'in daily routine... So I did as they asked.

One of the better ones I've had was when a bloke went arse over tits on his pushbike 100m ahead of me or so. I pulled up to see if he was alright.
Every human mongrel within a 1km radius of the event congregated and began abusing me, because they "assumed" I hit him. I got called everything under the sun, including the "bull bars should be banned because of this" motions... The poor bugger who crash landed ended up having to defend me from being lynched.

Especially nowdays humanity gone all mad since Covid siesta began... I do a major assesment before I assist.

Like most other occasions, I get to see the good and the very ugly in people.
In a nutshell: "We're in the 21st century, I simply won't settle in believing a minor flood at my garage means I have no power 3rd day in a row......."
(chose to live across the road from a river)
She couldn't get her SRT jeep out of garage, and hubby couldn't charge the hybrid camry to get going or something... Meanwhile most others in the estate were wondering what tools to get at bunnings to even attempt cleaning up the river flood damage left behind.
Money breeds s#it.

Was up in QLD in 2019. Stopped in Gympie for lunch and checked the local estate agent's window as you do walking to the cafe/fish n chip/bakery and was amazed by the property prices. Holy farrrrr I should buy something up around here! Drool, drool. Got home and did some research before realising half that joint is under water once every 10 years. This info should be offered up in the Section 30 or whatever they're called in each state.

Got the Colarado bogged again in the same swamp I got stuck in a couple of weeks ago at site, went down like a stone. Ended up alternating between traction control and not. Managed to work its way out, bloody amazing to be honest, sometimes modern electronic traction controls really do work, but next time I am giving this swamp a very wide berth.

Absolutely, started at about 80 thru to 110 when it was almost bucking off the road. Spent 30 mins in the washbay, twice to get the extra balance weights off all 4 wheels, drive very smoothly now!

Had a contractor team lined up for a month to execute a critical portion of work within an integrated plan and they pulled the pin 2 days before the start date - didn't even call, I rang to check they were set to arrive and it was a simple 'nah mate, got something else on, can't make, how about next month'. Just where and what system allows this behaviour to evolve and become 'good business practice'? Now scrambling to find someone else with 48 hrs out from a 1 month task, racing the start of the wet season. Its 43 degC today, started at 5% RH at 6am, now 3% and slightly windy, absolute killer conditions - knocked the crew off at 2pm, simply too hard and dangerous.

Every business I interviewed with dangled every carrot at their disposal to get me onboard. Id love to think otherwise and that I'm just really desirable, but I feel the truth of the matter is that currently businesses are that desperate to find someone who vaguely fits the JD that they will take who they can get then develop that person if they are willing to learn.

There are so many local businesses with signs out the front practically begging for new employees. Obviously this has a flow on effect to businesses and taking on work, they can pick and choose the jobs they want when they want as the work will most likely be there later... If they still need it.

I'm sure things will turn around in the next 12 months but for now it just seems to be tough for any business owner.

I personally don't think things will change any time soon, times have changed especially since Covid, potential employees (in certain areas of business) seeking jobs now seem to be making the rules as I hear on 3AW(yes old man radio), people turning up for an interview and then demanding outrageous requests from the employer if they wish to start working with them. Some of the example said were, bringing their pets to work, starting later than supposed to, having multiple "stress breaks" each day, leaving earlier than supposed too, having gym sessions paid by the employer etc etc. One guy rang and owns a restaurant and couldn't even get a kitchen hand to wash dishes for $35 an hour! Insane.
Im actually a little concerned for this country, of this self entitled generation who will be next inline to run the place.

Anyhoo back on topic! Anyone know a roofing plumber, that will turn up? Our guttering, that was put on our extension, overflows with the slightest amount of rain, and the down pipes are not blocked too. :P

Over here big companies (not small business and restaurants like in the situation you described) do offer gym sessions and actually encourage employees to use them. Their point is having people loose weight, improve self stem, be healthier, better immune systems, less prone to depression, and all other benefits that come with taking care of your body. The end results, according to the companies own studies, are healthier, energetic and better motivated people that go the extra mile AND with less sick days required. So for these companies, this pays off.

Regarding late start or early leave, that is really up to the type of job in question. That are people that are clearly able to deliver a lot when given tasks with just the deadline and left alone to do it, rather then having to obey punch clocks. Off course, that is TOTALLY job type related. Tasks that can be done by one person with little intervention.

Now, for bringing pets, fark, that's too much... it reveals an immature personality which is something I wouldn't want when building a team.

When my daughter was with the NDIS, they introduced a policy where people could bring their pets, dogs, cats rabbits, birds lizards, you name it, into the functioning office we the tax payers are funding, even though it operates at 3% productivity at best, then found there were some incompatibilities with this strategy, the major one being the board room turned into a shit field, and became impossible to be used for the stink, ummmm, yeah animals to work, maybe not so good.

That the issue I had with the builder for our extension. He’d bring his dog every day and let it shit everywhere and just leave it there. I quickly put a stop to that.

Not anger but more disheartened with the news from one dealership, but angry with another dealership. Pre-ordered parts (rocker cover gasket) to lessen the blow on service day after advice from a dealership. Stuffed around for nearly 6 months waiting, waiting, waiting. I took it to another dealership for servicing, who serviced my bike and told me I need a new head gasket. My baby was leaking oil, bad. Part has to come from overseas, with a 2-3 month wait. Nearly $2k to fix it. I've spent too much money on it to 'part it out'. Couldn't leave the bike there for that long, so had to organize transport and storage, and my nearly 300km, one way trip home via train. I'm so glad I found a dealership that knows and does what they're talking about! This summers' bike riding is almost done and dusted.

Seem to be striking a run of poor purchases lately. The Marks Hydrobooster finally arrived after numerous calls back and forth with the supplier and the mount plate holes for the TB48 Master cylinder have one hole half blocked by the casting. The issue appears to be a casting irregularity. I contacted Marks and they absolutely said dont die grind the housing, but the forth bolt cannot be inserted to full depth and so another back and forth exchange expected when they can get to it. UPDATE - the invisible and non existent instructions, together with the bolts that would not start in the threaded holes until I ran a tap thru them, resolved the issue. I have forwarded some constructive comments to the supplier and will see if they think they need to modify their package or not.
Last night bought some front guards for the GQ off a supplier 5 minutes away. Could not complete the transaction because the 'bot' stated the items needed a delivery charge added. I sent an email to the company, requesting I pick them up instead , today, as I return to site tomorrow, 40 minutes on hold, hung down, super busy it seems, then noticed my order has been updated to say one of the guards is now out of stock - so WTF? Spent another 15 minutes on wait, gave up.

If you're blocked by a paywall on that link, read below (if you're interested):

Australian Treasury secretary John Fraser: 'I am a prick. I really am.'

The plain-speaking John Fraser is on his second stint in Treasury after two decades in a completely different world.

Geoff KitneyColumnist

Sep 24, 2015 – 12.15am

It was some detour John Fraser took on his way to becoming Australia's most powerful economic policy bureaucrat. The journey from his last day as a deputy secretary of the federal Treasury, in the time of the Keating government, to the day in January this year, when he took up his appointment by the Abbott government as secretary of the Treasury, was 22 years.

It was two decades during which Fraser lived a completely different existence in a completely different world. He wound up in London, in one of the highest-paying investment banking jobs in the world. He was 41 when he left Canberra and 63 when he returned.

"I left the Treasury without any intention of going back," he says. "It had been an exciting place to be in the '80s. But then we had the recession in the early '90s. That was pretty tough going and, in the words of that great Peggy Lee song, Is That All There Is?, I thought: 'Is this it? Is this my life?'"

John Fraser, Secretary of the Treasury, in his office in Canberra. "There is nothing wrong with luck, as long as you recognise it is luck. Don't kid yourself it's necessarily because you're a genius."*Louie Douvis

That was mid-1993, a few months after the Keating government had appointed another deputy secretary, Ted Evans, as Treasury secretary. It had been a rough time for the Treasury, with Labor Party critics blaming it for resisting spending increases they argued would have helped avoid the recession. (Fraser says later data revisions show the economy didn't go into recession.)

"I got to the stage where I had to ask the question of whether I was going to spend the whole of my life in one place. I had been chased by a couple of investment banks, the first time in 1991. I have always believed that you have to be an adventurer. I thought, 'This sounds like a good adventure,' so I went to the private sector."

More than a decade later, in 2006, I interviewed Fraser in his plush office high above Lombard Street in the heart of London's financial district. He had been in London for six years, moving there from Sydney where he had joined the Swiss Bank Corporation, later to become UBS, after leaving Treasury. It was before the global financial crisis and the City of London was pulsating with the excesses of the boom.

At the time it seemed incongruous: Fraser, a former salaried Canberra bureaucrat, a man who dwelt in the shadows behind Paul Keating in his political prime, was sitting on top of the City. As chief executive of UBS Global Asset Management, he was wheeling and dealing, earning a head-spinning amount of money at the height of investment banking's bonus boom. Yet what appeared incongruous was anything but.

Fraser had made the transition from public policy adviser to investment banker with extraordinary success. UBS Global Asset Management had gone from earning an annual profit of about $US200 million in 2001 to a net profit before tax of $US1.7 billion in 2007.

Between 2007 and his departure from UBS at the end of last year, Fraser was the only senior executive to remain with the company, heading the only part of the business that had kept making profits right through the GFC.

Fraser with Finance Minister Mathias Cormann.*Alex Ellinghausen

"My long-term plan was to live my life between England and Australia. It was working really nicely," Fraser reflects now. "I was given terrific freedom at UBS. There wasn't a day when I didn't have freedom. You have to run your own life. That's the important thing."

I'm interviewing Fraser again, this time in his Canberra office in late July. It's a different setting but the same sense of incongruity. Fraser was one of former Prime Minister Tony Abbott's "captain's picks", chosen to replace Martin Parkinson, whom Abbott sacked as Treasury secretary a year or so after coming to power. Fraser faces a big adjustment as a result of the change of Liberal Party leadership - working to a new Treasurer who will be working under a new Prime Minister.

It's an unprecedented appointment, the first outsider from the private sector to take on Canberra's most important public policy advising job. Fraser took up the position just weeks before the February Liberal Party leadership spill, a political shock that changed the course of the government and in effect killed its economic reform agenda – a big setback for a new economic policy chief. But with Malcolm Turnbull expected to intensify the government's focus on economic reform and with Fraser a strong advocate of reform, the change may, in fact, strengthen his position.

When Fraser was first sounded out about returning to Australia, he wasn't interested. But then Abbott called him and said something that, unbeknown to the Prime Minister, resonated with the banker. Abbott urged Fraser to think about it in terms of giving something back to Australia, after all his success in both the public and private sectors.

Former Treasurer Joe Hockey with Fraser outside the Treasury building earlier this year.*Andrew Meares

"I know 'serving the Australian people' sounds hackneyed," Fraser says. "But it did strike a chord."

It was a notion he was already acting on in another arena. While living in London, Fraser had become involved in a British organisation called Help for Heroes, which provides financial and material assistance to British soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. He got involved after talking to a mate back in Canberra who served in the British and Australian armies, whom he regards as a real war hero.

Fraser initially just wanted to make a significant donation, but ended up volunteering, spending time with the veterans, including taking some to events such as the Formula One British Grand Prix, which UBS sponsored, and helping arrange fundraising dinners.

"It changed my life," Fraser says. "We would get hedge fund managers along to dinner and I would get up and say, 'All right, you have had your evening's entertainment. You know what you have to do, boys.' A lot of them were clients." Into their third bottle of red wine, the hedge fund managers would sit down and write "1 million-buck cheques".

"It was out of guilt about my life and my good luck. When you sit down with these [war heroes], some with faces half gone, with legs and arms missing and yet still a massive sense of humour, it seriously made me realise that some of us have been incredibly lucky in our lives."

'Something to assuage my conscience'

Fraser also developed another non-work interest in London, part of what he calls "trying to do something to assuage my conscience". He served on the board of the Marymount International School for girls at Kingston Upon Thames, a role he took up after the nun who chaired the board heard him give a lecture on ethics in financial management.

"The school needed some financial expertise as they tried to protect their not inconsiderable assets from the Vatican," Fraser says. "The concern was that the Vatican needed assets to pay off damages arising from their problems with the priests. I was the only non-Catholic and the only male on the board. It was a terrific learning experience."

On January 15, Fraser took his place behind the Treasury secretary's desk in Canberra, a few doors away from the office he left two decades earlier. That he'd been away a long time was immediately apparent; some of his staff are the offspring of his 1980s contemporaries.

There are other changes. Fraser says economic policy is much more complex than it was in the 1980s and early 1990s. The financial sector is far more sophisticated and there are many more lobby groups, which are much more accomplished in the way they present their cases. The state Treasury departments are headed by highly skilled and well-informed people. The number and quality of think tanks has risen dramatically. Government ministers are better informed.

"I don't think power has shifted away from Canberra but it is more complex," he says. "We [Treasury] need to engage more. I think we could be better positioned to provide advice if we do that." To that end, Fraser has established a Treasury office in Sydney and is setting one up in Melbourne, designed to help the department better understand what's going on and being said outside the national capital.

Those looking in from the outside are still trying to get a fix on the new Treasury secretary – most particularly, a sense of how he will perform in the role after so long away from back-room, public policy advice. Less than a year in, it's too soon to make much of an assessment, which is the reason Fraser does not appear on*The Australian Financial Review Magazine's 2015 overt or covert power lists.

Fraser has acknowledged that the political environment is not the best for encouraging the government to adopt a robust economic policy agenda. He publicly differed with former PM Abbott and former Treasurer Joe Hockey over Sydney housing prices, calling the market a bubble. Abbott and Hockey insisted it wasn't. Senior ministers say Fraser has been much more blunt behind the scenes; one says he made it clear he thought this year's budget should have gone harder on reducing the deficit.

"John says what he thinks," says one minister who will only speak off the record. "No one is ever going to be in any doubt about his views."

Insiders say the risk for Fraser is that after Fraser's years of wielding great power at UBS, he will feel weighed down by the Canberra political process. "Fraser might end up being very frustrated," one cabinet minister says.

'You won't see me for the dust'

Fraser is candid – blunt, in fact – about his position. "I have had a great life. I can tell you, it is nice not having to worry about money. One of the great beauties of doing this job is that I don't need it. I didn't seek it and, unlike a lot of my colleagues, if I didn't want to do it any more there is no problem. I am very free. The only way I can live through this job is if it doesn't work out, you won't see me for the dust."

Fraser was raised in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale, "a working-class suburb in those days". He was one of four children, the only son of parents George and Solveig. "The greatest good fortune of my life was to have wonderful parents," he says in reflection. "My father was totally unlike me. He was just a lovely, soft-hearted guy."

His father was a bookkeeper in a family business and advised his son not to follow the same path. "He said to me: 'Son, don't work for a family company unless you are the family.'" It was Fraser's father who set him on the path towards economics.

"I wanted to be a lawyer, initially. Dad said: 'We are not Jewish so you are not going to be a lawyer.' He wanted me to be an economist, but he said: 'We are not Catholic, so you are not going to join the Victorian Treasury. Get a job in the federal Treasury, then you will have a job for life.'"

Fraser was studying economics at Monash University when his father intervened. "In 1970, I was lying on my bed on a Saturday morning, waiting to play rugby in the afternoon – I was too slow to play AFL. I was 18. Dad came in and said, 'The Treasury want to interview you on Thursday.' I said 'What?' and he said 'Don't worry about it. They will actually pay you to go to university.'

"I found out later that Dad had written the application on my behalf. It was for a cadetship, under which the Treasury paid for your third and fourth year of uni and you were then indentured to the Treasury."

Fraser flew to Canberra for the interview, his first ever plane ride, and was interviewed by 10 Treasury officials. He got the scholarship and "went from being one of the poorest people at Monash [University] to doing quiet well – they were paying good money in those days".

He excelled at his economics studies and, after completing a four-year degree, joined the Treasury in Canberra in 1973 as a condition of the scholarship. He climbed a steeply curving path, becoming one of the youngest ever deputy secretaries. But after the success and riches that his economics degree has brought, Fraser is sceptical about economics as a profession.

'Economists should be humble'

"We know far less than what we think we know," he says. "And what we do know is far, far less than what we don't know. I think the global financial crisis and the aftermath are fundamental reasons why economists should be extremely humble. Extremely humble! No one picked it."

Fraser is a strong advocate for the big economic ideas that were at the centre of the Abbott government's pre-leadership crisis agenda: fiscal consolidation, lower taxes, smaller government, less regulation, labour market liberalisation and building Australia's small and medium-sized entrepreneurial business sector.

He has also actively supported tighter foreign investment rules, in part a consequence of first-hand observation as a Sydney property owner overwhelmed by approaches from Chinese property-buying intermediaries. (He has an apartment in the central business district.)

As for the magnitude of Australia's economic challenges – and the urgency of taking them on – Fraser is quite nuanced. He says that, while there's no immediate crisis, Australia has to work steadily at implementing reforms that lift productivity and deal with the challenges posed by an ageing population.

"We do have serious economic issues to confront. Our income per capita is falling. So it is a case of trying to address them earlier rather than later. We need to be aware that the world is moving on quickly."

A couple of things have struck him about Australia after being away for a long time. One is a shift away from a bipartisan recognition of what needs to be done to deal with the economic challenges ahead, a problem compounded by a sense of complacency resulting from a quarter of a century of continuous economic growth.

He has also been surprised that Australians are not more focused on what is happening in the rest of the world, especially in the Asia-Pacific region beyond the obvious significance of China. There appears to be too little recognition of the changes occurring in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan. India is also on its way to becoming hugely important.

"I would have thought, with globalisation and internationalisation, the community would have been a little more up to date on that," he says.

His view that Australia has been too narrowly focused on China is being vindicated by the China-related economic slowdown. But Fraser says he remains optimistic about the future of the Chinese economy and does not share the doom and gloom scenarios found in some of the recent commentary.

'I am a prick'

That said, he's acutely aware of the risk of appearing to be a "smart arse" who returned from London to lecture Australia on how to do things. "I don't want to fall into that trap," he says. "But equally, it is my job to provide robust advice about the problems I see and how I believe they should be solved."

Fraser is treading cautiously and is self-deprecating about his role, yet associates say he's already been quite rigorous in stamping his authority on the Treasury. Colleagues say he is tough, focused and demanding. "He doesn't suffer fools," one official says. "He can be pretty brutal with what he says." Fraser concurs: "I am a prick. I really am."

He showed during his years at UBS that he gets what he wants. His record there indicates a strong sense of probity. UBS was taken to the brink of collapse by its exposure to subprime lending, which caused it to write down its business by more than $US50 billion and sack more than 11,000 staff. The company's chairman and chief executive also resigned.

Fraser tried to resign in 2008, handing his resignation to Ossie Grübel, "a grizzled old German" who had just been appointed to try to clean up the bank's subprime mess.

"I quit UBS because I'd just had enough. I gave a year's notice. I said, 'I am not going to tell anyone,' but I told the CEO that 'I am leaving because I am just disgusted, I am embarrassed,'" he says. "I got talked into staying."

Grübel promised that he would build a new UBS, one that performed to the highest standards and behaved with integrity and honesty. Fraser liked him and was disappointed when Grübel resigned in 2011, taking full responsibility for the bank's failure to act on internal warnings that two of the bank's staff had engaged in unauthorised trades which led to losses of more than $US2 billion. With Fraser still at the helm, UBS Asset Management continued to perform profitably.

Fraser says he learnt some big things from working in investment banking through the greatest financial crisis of modern times. "I learnt to be very, very cynical about people. You know, when you put a big bucket of money in front of people, it can do strange things. All the systems under the sun won't save you from a malevolent person or a foolish person.

"The best system of compliance and risk management is to get to know people and to look them in the eyes. You have got to be very careful about giving people your trust. That was a big change for me because I had generally tended to take people at face value. But equally, you have got to be sensible. Everybody is not a turkey. Everybody is not a crook."

One of the good things about returning to the Treasury is that you can trust people, he says. "There are no integrity issues here. There are no issues about professionalism."

His advice for people who think they are geniuses is this: "A lot of us owe our good fortune to a lot of luck. Luck is a fortune. I was very lucky to have great parents and to associate with some great people. There is nothing wrong with luck, as long as you recognise it is luck. Don't kid yourself it's necessarily because you're a genius."

He also applies this to the nation: "We do have great good fortune in Australia. Everybody is happy, and God bless us. I feel it here, in Canberra in particular, where everybody is deliriously happy and comfortable. But I do worry a little bit that we don't realise how fortunate we are and that good fortune will only continue for our grandchildren if we face up to a few issues."

How and when and in what way Australia does that is now in no small part up to John Fraser.

Not angry. But just, I don’t know… so we dropped a lot of coin getting stuff done in our back yard a most know. During the works we said we want to run an access pit with hot and cold water, gas and a waste for a bbq.
So it was all organised, the trench was dug prior to concreting and paving, the plumber came in and did his things. Then the conc was laid and then the paving. A paver was specifically cut for the access pit so it looks all neat. Great!
Well some months later we get our new bbq and I have trouble removing the access lid. Seemed a bit stuck. An hour later still no joy. By then I’d sworn many times and had enough. Out came the mash hammer.
This is what I uncovered.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/11/51.jpg

A 10inch think slab of “mud”, what is used to adhere the paver to concrete. Then another 12 or so inches of crushed rock. An hour and a half later I find the pipes and then I can finally connect it all up.

Like I said. Not angry. But it makes you think what goes through peoples mind when they do stupid shit like this.
Think brother! Think!

Gippsland timber girl’s calls to Labor: ‘Save my dad’s job’

Heyfield Primary School student Indiana Lockett has written a heartfelt letter to Labor, to try and save her dad’s timber job.

10-year-old Indiana Lockett's letter asking Labor MP Harriet Shing to save her father's job.

Indiana Lockett, 10, is trying to save her father’s timber job.

The grade-four Heyfield Primary School student is appealing to Gippsland Labor MP Harriet Shing to stop the closure of the native forest timber industry, which has come to a standstill across most of the state.

“Our parents work in the forests and they are very worried that they won’t have any more jobs,” Indiana says in her letter.

“We are scared we will have to move away from our house and our friends at school.”

Indiana said her mum, Hannah, told her Premier Daniel Andrews “wants to do it to keep the Greens happy”.

Speaking to The Weekly Times last night Indiana said she would travel in her father Adam’s truck to a rally with timber workers in Morwell tomorrow morning, stopping at Ms Shing’s office to hand over the letter.

“I’ve made my own banner ‘Save my dad’s job’, with a drawing of me and dad’s truck,” Indiana said.

“My dad enjoys his job. I see the joy on his face and I don’t want that smile to go off his face.”

Mr Lockett (Adam) said he had introduced his five children to the forest that sustained them and regularly took them out on trips to explore local landmarks, with his oldest son, Connor, now working as a timber harvester.

Indiana Lockett, with her dad Adam.

Ultimately the Heyfield truck driver said he could take his rig and family to find work elsewhere, “but I’ve grown up with native hardwood logging and always worked on hauling”.

“While I can move away the town can’t,” Mr Lockett said.

Indiana is horrified at the idea of moving and wants to continue seeing her dad drive his truck past school.

“It’s so good, when dad comes past the back of the school in his green truck, I run to the fence and give him the honk signal. I get so happy to see him.”

Trucks and other vehicles will rally in Warragul and Rosedale from 9am tomorrow morning, before driving their trucks down the Princes Freeway in what organisers have called a funeral procession to ANC Forestry Group’s Morwell timber yard.

Forest and Wood Communities Australia managing director Justin Law said the procession of trucks would carry a coffin marked “Timber towns” to where wreathes would be laid in memory of the Andrews Government’s failure to protect the industry from green lawfare.

The thing about this story is, if you're opposed to logging native hardwoods here in highly-regulated and controlled Australia, just suppose it's banned for environmental reasons. What then? We still need hardwood. So then we need to import it from places like Indonesia where they they say "Regulations? What are they? We'll strip away if you don't mind."

So, either utilise our highly-regulated and authority-overseen hardwood forests, employing local logging, trucking, milling and distribution companies/employers/people, all paying wages and taxes along the way, or import cheap foreign hardwoods from under-regulated overseas native forests, log, truck and load them onto ships to be transported thousands of kilometres down here.

What is the net global environmental benefit in that?

But idealogical politics is a completely different thing to logical thinking.

End of rant.

Thanks Plassy, I was so proud of her when she did the phone interview with Peter from the weekly times, spoke very well & didn’t miss a beat. You’ve hit the nail on the head- contrary to what the public are told our industry is highly regulated & constantly scrutinised & audited. The term ‘illegal logging’ that's thrown around so freely has nothing do with us just going & cutting trees down wherever we please as so many people interpret it- 99% of the time it’s a paperwork error or technicality. As you said the alternative is imported timber with NO restrictions or environmental guidelines but it’s not in our back yard so everyone’s conscience is clear.

FWIW: Our Ex-GM used to be extremely high up with GunnaaaaSoons timber..global.
As the earlier story goes, massive Australian financial roadblocks were constantly put in place. So much so they diligently worked with Royal Melbourne ZOO to pump Millions into a sustainable ‘Leadbeaters’ - Possum extinction breeding program. Every single Multi-Mega Dollar ‘Leadbetter’ born died within months of tagged release.
The reason was that Native LBP’s are by NATURE extremely ‘Allusively’ Territorial and didn’t Appreciate the already still & Always there selectively harvested corridors built against Rivals.

A word of warning for those with a van or camper.

I bought an ADCO cover for my poptop. I left the van for two to three months under the cover. When I opened the van, I found the rear section was soaked inside. There was mould and destroyed carpet. Furious, I rang the shop I bought the cover from, they checked the ADCO site. Unfortunately they found the cover listed as 'Water Resistant." So no comeback for getting some sort of compensation there.

The cover let rain through, which would dribble down the sides of the van or stay on the roof. When the sun shined, some of the moisture evaporated and condensed in the evening cool. This allowed a bit of moisture to end up inside the van, too.

I have had the van in the shed for months, letting it dry out and have done repairs.

I took the cover to a local canvas shop, and they sewed a new roof on the ADCO. Yet to test that out for being water proof.

Well 10 days ago they shut down 80% of us native forest logging contractors through court junctions, then yesterday afternoon they shut down the reminder of the industry, so now the whole hardwood industry in Victoria is at a stand still & this could be the end.

I detest hearing the word Covid so farkin ' much, let alone talking about it. But fark me, I hate people that don't care even more! What an abortion we've had last few weeks at work. All it takes is one cnut to fcuk so much!
Showed up at work, sweating, fatigued, shaking like Hiroshima for 2 days. Blames hay-fever. And only then decides to take action, stay home. And shit!!!!, would you believe he tested positive. By then damage control was beyond hope. Succeeding week and a half, 7 out of our crew of 15 went down the shit slide. Multiple families sick, some pretty severely. Multiple huge dollar-tagged projects went under, postponed, canned. Now instead of winding down, it's a huge catch up under-manned race for pre-holidays work delivery for the few of us left. Huge days, weekends!
One person. Took ONE person with a macho-man, soldier on, i'll be right, cnut of an ego to cause such mayhem.
Management furious! Has a HUGE sharp axe out and wants to start culling... But have no policing, proof, of who and when, as theyve been shoving the "Stay at home if unwell" motto down our throats almost daily. I agree with them! If you come to work that ill, should be out the gate no questions asked with no entitlements, looking for a new job.
This goes for everything, not just covid. Forget covid! Whatever youve got. Cold , flu, tuberculosis, arse injected death syndrome.... If youre so sick, stay the fcuk away !

CouriersPlease make me angry.

In November I ordered several items from Sparesbox, I’ve dealt with them previously and never had a issue. They advised 10 days for delivery but I was expecting a bit of an extra delay with delivery due to the time of year.
Got notified that the order was ready and collected by CouriersPlease with a Tracking number.

Advised that it was being delivered 2/12, no delivery but tracking changed to 5/12. Again no delivery but tracking showed issue with delivery, ‘offboarded back to facility’. Nothing further, after a week I finally spoke to a person who advised the package was leaking and they threw it in the bin.
I asked for proof and they sent a picture of a leaking concentrated coolant bottle.

Asked what happened to the rest of the order and got no response.

16/12 I find one bottle of coolant on the verandah and Tracking shows as delivered.

Now I’m trying to track down 10l of oil, another 5l of coolant, fuel filter, oil filter and air filter.

Feel a bit better after venting BUT will feel a lot better if I had what I paid for.

During this time I purchased and received several other items form eBay and Amazon and had no issues with couriers.

Looks like it, just received this email from the courier.

“ Hi Jack,

Good day.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

There were 4 items under this consignment. Two of those which is CPB6QHZ0235232001 & CPB6QHZ0235232002 have been returned to the sender due to the incurred damage. While CPB6QHZ0235232004 has been disposed with the same reason that the goods were damaged.

We suggest to coordinate with the sender.

We do apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused and appreciate your understanding.”

The courier has a 1.5 star rating from over 9500 reviews, you have to rate 1 star minimum on ProductReview. My review actually got some action.

I try to shop locally Craig, but in this case and previously the price is more like 50% less.

I’ll give you an example, had to purchase a new garage door opener sprocket kit. I had all the details, not available anywhere in Ballarat. I was advised it required a complete new motor. Found one on Amazon $31.50 free delivery but had to come from OS and expected arrival 19/1.
Ended up getting the exact same from Wodonga $109 delivered. Took all of three days from order to delivery, different courier luckily.

I avoid the local Nissan dealer like the plague and use PatrolaPart for genuine or order from OS, buying local would be nice but not the price.
