Trying to order paint stripper and some cans of spray paint for a click & collect from Bunnings, as I have next week off and want to get a few things done. But I can't as these two items are not available for online shopping, pickup ups only! WTF! So I ring them and I was given some excuse which was bla bla bloody bla! Then told they will find out if I can order it, they will contact me in two days, then told I should be able to collect it next week. Should! Are you f&*king kidding me?! Crap service at it best. Onya Bunnings!

No one asked me if I was trade customer etc even the chick that served me at the counter didn't ask for my powerpass before serving me, I think I would have been served regardless.

Two days after Stage 4 kicked in. I walked in, bought a few things, paid and walked out ...
Usually , that would sound normal.
However ...
I wholeheartedly admit I had NO clue Bunnings was affected. Living under a rock maybe I am ,but I've been filtering a lot of Covid news for my own mental sake.
I was in my work uniform . But I had no ABN, power pass or whatever ... So, I was unknowingly breaking the rules. If I'd have been apprehended , I would have been in all sorts ...
But ...
I was not asked , questioned , looked at ONCE. It's as if it was business as usual. Even the items I bought were not really trade related but i got through without a hiccup.
It was only a day or 2 later that it dawned on me, what had and could have been after I spoke to a mate sparky .
Lesson learnt.

Sent from my Pixel 3a XL using TapatalkBut what are the repurcussions? Isn't it Bunnings responsibility? Just like say garden suppliers are forced to deal with trade customers in house, I'm assuming there is some sort of proof required to do so?

Well, if their net was tight. I'd have been refused entry. Simple.
If I got pulled up at payment or leaving ... I'd say, cops would have been called for sure since I breached the rules.
And me genuinely not knowing , would not fly with the cops.
Also, the fact , that I entered the store unchecked, therefore I assumed all was well.... I doubt cops would have bought that either.
Supposedly cops are pulling tradie utes/vans over , after leaving Bunnings , checking that they're not buying non trade / domestic items ...

fair enough. i cant see police wasting their time on stuff like that though? maybe closer to the CBD? if i can justify any purchase made at bunnings to the wife, im sure it will fly with the cops lol. bud seriously, what rule would you be breaking? if the thing your buying is essential then i dont see the problem? i am not a tradesperson, but on friday i hit a tap on the bobcat i had hired, i am not a plumber but i am perfectly capable of fixing it myself. having water at my house is an essential living item for my family, surely under those circumstances buying a replacement riser(in my case) is perfectly acceptable?

So many grey areas, such little time for rules to be written on hundreds if not thousands of possible scenarios for being out and about within 5km too. I think we all just need to be practical and do what we can, where we can, if truly and unselfishly needed for a few more weeks. Our little garden supplies has experienced grandpa & grandmas turning up with 6x4 trailers for desperately needed lockdown redgum heat. Office lady kindly advises over the fence they need to park opposite then phone guides them through credit card payment before a loader is UHF called to load their trailer in our turning circle at the gates. Crushed rock and rubble has been another sort after product for people’s driveways recently washed away and self fixing needs after contactless dumping delivery ASAP!

We have a big sign out the front of our shop saying "Due to COVID Restrictions. No walk in orders, all orders MUST be phoned in and paid prior to collection". Then they get upset with me when I politely tell them they cannot do this. So then they stand there in front of me and ring us up with a smug look and order their goods. I soon wipe that smug off their face when I tell them it will be around 2 hours to get their order ready. Knowing that I could probably do it straight away in a couple of minutes...:harhar:

So we can’t start the extension on the house now until stage 4 lockdown is over apparently. No new works are allowed to commence, existing works can still go ahead. Looks like being finished by Christmas is just a dream now. Trying to orchestrate Freedom to come in when the walls are up to do their final measurements so they can build the kitchen in time for Christmas will be a struggle, also getting the HVAC guys in as well. Plus get all the windows and doors made. Bloody hell, my head hurts just thinking about it.

Just got home after a huge night running around with SES legends , clearing trees and making power liens safe and clear. Absolutely wrecked I am .
But what makes me more tired and angry is throughout the night / curfew period ... the amount of people still casually roaming around , hanging out on the street , P platers chilling out with groups in the car parks, families walking the dogs at 1.30am ( yes you read that right ) ..
Clearly acting like nothing's wrong . Not even a big storm can deter some it seems. Business as usual for some.
It's obvious were never going to shake this virus off our backs. But humanity like this , won't make it any easier .

I recently had a couple of long range fuel tanks fitted, no drama's there apart from a dodgy fuel gauge which we are sorting out. What has made me angry, is that I filled the tank from close to empty after my recent Dirk Hartog Island trip. I fuelled up at the Overlander roadhouse using one of the pumps (Pump 1) where you need to put in your credit card and pre-authorise an amount. All up I filled it with 158.86 litres, with all of this apart from about 1 litre going into the main tank, I hadn't used the subtank at all, but squeezed about 1 litre in there to use up my pre-authorised amount of $200.
Interesting I thought, how could I get around 157 litres into a supposed 145 litre main tank? I thought my tank was bigger than I realised, so reserved judgement until today. I ran the tank right down until the fuel light came on while driving home yesterday. This morning i removed the drain bung and emptied it, measuring the fuel, I put 4 litres back into it and went to my usual servo 2 km's down the road. The most I could squeeze in was 142.59 litres, this means that the tank takes about 146 litres maximum! So it is pretty close to what it should be.
So it looks to me like I've paid the Overlander roadhouse in WA for about 12 or 13 litrs of fuel I couldn't possibly have fit in my tank! Seems like Pump Number 1 is over reading, I'd hate to think how many truckies have filled up 1500+ litres from here and paid for a shitload of fuel they haven't used! I think I'll be sending an email to weights and measures or whoever it is that looks after this type of thing. Bastards!

Not angry, just an observation.
I've been reasonably active with some online purchasing lately.
Ordered some extendable mirrors on eBay on 30/8 from a Melbourne location, latest tracking information from this morning:
2 Sep 2020 4:35pm Shipping information approved by Australia Post
Ordered some Front Control Arm bushes via eBay from Melbourne on 8/9 late evening, latest tracking information from this morning:
11 Sep 2020 3:23am Item processed at facility SUNSHINE WEST, VIC
Ordered some specialist shockers on eBay from Birmingham England on 8/9 also late evening, sent via Heathrow and arrived customs in Melbourne on 9/9:
Cleared customs and delivered this morning via DHL.
I had to pay postage for both local items but the overseas item was free delivery.

13th September 2020, 01:42 PM
Jack, firstly there is no such thing as free postage, you pay for it in the item, its just not disclosed. Second, the entire postal and parcel delivery system is under a massive load, not enough flights from international locations, so delays, then locally in Aus we have Covod restrictions in play - Vic sends all parcels to NSW and SA for sorting then they are snt back to a skeleton crew for the final processing - I had a parcel purchased in Dandenong Vic, 20klm from hone, sent to NSW and then all the way to Adelaide before finally landing here - box was a bloody mess. Then I ordered gear from NSW and they used Toll and it was here at the front door 30 hrs later. I was talking to a postie yesterday and he has transferred from the letter deivison to parcels so he can work 70hrs a week, 7 day job, as much OT as he likes - Aust Post can't handle the postage as everything is being done on-line because retail has shutdown to a large degree. I have stuff that has been sitting 'awaiting delivery ' for 2 weeks. What I finally did on one delivery was raise a tracking enquiry and it was here 2 days later - delivered at 8pm by an Aust Post contractor - its just a mountain being harvested by a few ants at the moment it seems. Must be demoralising at the coal face i would think.
jack
13th September 2020, 02:08 PM
Yeap, I understand the ‘free’ postage issue. They were heaps cheaper sent from UK than I could source them locally.
But this was also the case when I ordered spares from UAE, they arrived way quicker than the local order and that was twelve months ago, pre Covid.
Auspost is certainly under the pump with online sales raising exponentially. They were even asking staff to volunteer to do deliveries.

They ramble on about 'Household bubbles'. WTF? It mentions visiting but not staying with others. I used the search bar to and typed in : Can you stay at another house overnight in regional Vic, (or something to that effect) and it led me to a page regarding snoring. True dinks!!

It seems that people are now dumping roosters as well as those unwanted dogs and cats.
Just back from trip around the Dawson River and surrounding country where we had three separate bush camp sites with resident roosters. There were five at one site. Noisy buggers very early in the morning.
All these sites were far from towns and no where near a house.

Been coming up with a error, but it's not a fault. Something about too much detergent and the machine will fix it itself. Bullshit have tried everything, no faults with no load or detergent, put one clean item with no detergent and fault comes back.

Worked with my reverse cycle A/C after pwr surge.
Maybe flush water thru where soap goes in / clean lint thingo.

I know it is easy to check, but I recommend having the rego number and date due of each family members' vehicles posted on the fridge.Dunno about you lot over there but here in WA you can ring the dept of transport n get notifications sent through via email, usually about 4 weeks ahead then one even over I think,

Don't worry, I got my rego papers months ago... they got buried, forgot about them, paid the compulsory CTP, got a letter in the mail yesterday saying they have not received payment for rego :(
And because I was only doing 6 monthly and its out of rego by 21 days my CTP got cancelled, so now I need 2 get a 12 month ctp and rego, which also means I need 2 get a pink slip ( roadworthy ) from the mechanic which I did not need for this times 6 monthly rego.
Over 2 weeks driving unregistered and uninsured :( talk about luck not getting pulled over by the fuzz in that period :)

have been accused by a neighbour whom i thought i got along with pretty well that i dobbed him into his kids for doing blow with another neighbour. im dissapointed that it has gone through three neighbours mouths before it came to me. and to be honest i couldnt care less what someone else does in their own time? im definitely not going to dob them in to their kids... i guess having friendly neighbours only lasts so long. i thought we were all good mates, and i think we will all move on, but i still feel pretty hurt that the accusation was even made in the first place.

Yeah mate, no confrontation here. The third neighbour to hear invited me over for a beer tonight to clear the air. I have no hard feelings to him, infact I respect him a little more as the accusations were made regarding him and his kids. I'm just pretty hurt that the previous two would think that and not come to me in the first place. Gotta get along with the neighbours but it doesn't make me feel any less betrayed

Not always possible Nic, even if they live a km away and in your case it appears he has the problem but this does not relieve you of the burden of unwarranted gossip and uncertainty.
Consider your wellbeing, maybe as said try talking directly with him and that may stop inflaming the issue further.
Hard decision here. The blokes kids are his first concern for sharing around perceived knowledge.

Trucked back into our little sticks valley yard around 3:00pm to find over half a dozen valley kids hulled up in our (locked for their safety) site office with our legend office lady.
Still unsure exactly of why 30 odd ethnic teenagers bussed their way into town from the burbs to black & blue a couple of the older locals but some bullshart was mentioned about an ‘online’ kickoff/mouth off.
Bells & Whistle’s blocking our driveway until usual closing 5:00pm time and we’ve lost a decent chunk of coin today, usually our best last 2hrs of the day!
One decent local parent did come down from Kinglake to gracefully thank our office champ for her fast thinking, where on earth are the rest of these kids parents, office is still full off beer froth vomit from a 13 year old too.....sad state of affairs young man :-(

My current issues seem minor to others but I need to vent...
Trying to organise doors and windows for the extension. In a nutshell, what the law states and what to building inspector is telling us we have to do is two different things and he's pretty much said he has the final word. But what he wants is unreasonable and damn impossible to achieve. E.g. we have a large 3plus metre bi bold door which folds to outside when you open it. This inspector says me must have a fire resistant fly screen fitted to the outside of the door frame. Any half smart person would know this is impossible to achieve, but this guy says its how it has to be. There is other issues he's brought up with the windows but this is so fecking stupid....
So we are at a stalemate here. If we go by the book, he won't pass it. Guess we have to bring VCAT or someone in now. More shit to deal with.

Does that mean you legally have to have a fly screen?? I don't know anything about that, but I'd be very surprised if that was the case. Would he pass it if you had no flyscreen at all?

I always thought flyscreens were an accessory item.I "think" it has something to do with regulations handed down since the black Saturday.
Fire prone areas have some kind of a requirement when it comes to doors etc ...

Yeah, I don't doubt you Hodge, but surely a weatherproof lockable, fireproof door would be all that's required. Is the thinking that a fireproof fly wire door will stop your real door from burning down? Someone's wrong somewhere.
What if you don't want a fly wire door, are you asked to fit one? Bloody little Hitlers.

Yes. And they must be fitted externally. As Hodge has said, after Black Saturday, a lot of rules and regs were revisited and changed. So after many hours today of calling and reading (lucky its a quiet morning at work) I have found out that the window company mistakenly gave us the old rule sheet, prior to 2009, ugh. Slightly different rules. So yep we have to externally fit a fly screen to the outside.
This brings up a whole new set of issues.
1. The bi-fold will have to be made to fold inside, not outside.
2. The flyscreens conventionally used on bi-folds, concertina on themselves when you open it. Not like the usual framed screen that slides. Issue here, is the concertina screens are NOT BAL 12.5 rated as they are made from fibreglass. The screens must be made from stainless or aluminum.
So a framed screen looks to be our only choice. Which I definitely do NOT want. It will be pointless off having bi folds then.

We can't. They won't make the bi fold with the screen on the outside when the doors fold outwards. Which is the whole point of having the bi folds. If we go the solid screen option too, we will be left with ugly rails in the frame. And at over 4K for just this door. Im not real keen on that.

Can't do this, it wont pass inspection without a screen. It must have a screen.
I even said to the builder to just make up a temporary frame and we'll put our old 70's sliding door back in for now, then change it over after the inspection. If I do that, I need to re issue plans to council, which I then have to pay the drafty to do, then wait weeks and pay more money to council for it to go through.

If I do that, I need to re issue plans to council, which I then have to pay the drafty to do, then wait weeks and pay more money to council for it to go through.
Bloody hell mate, I wish you the best of luck with a shitty problem.

Home internet. Woke up yesty to no signal. I have Optus 4g with external antenna and has been nothing but stella for the last 15 months or so.
I use a external program that forces the modem to use certain bands of the 4g system. At best I have had speeds of 100mbps download. Averaged 20 to 30mbps most the time which I was stoked with for where I live as some of you know lol.
So my program tells me the bands I use to use I just can't get anymore. Something has drastically changed with Optus. I could get 5mbps without the antenna in the lounge now I get nothing in lounge. With external antenna I only get the worst band. Current speed of 1mbps at its best.... After a few hours with them they have escalated it which is kind of nice. I can think of another large telco I've had issues with before but we will see what the response is. I feel they have decommissioned a tower and I am now connecting to a shit one

Seriously all you doubters, battery tech is going off its head. Faster recharge, more range. 10 years ago you would call me a masturbator if I suggested a Tesla would eat a V8 for breakfast. My 09 VESS is crying. A 4wd with 50 kw of electric power at each wheel with independently controlled separate motors, no diffs, no gears, no transfer case, no oil, no egt, no catch can, fkall moving parts, but with incredibly stupid torque from zero, and when you engine brake down a steep hill and return that energy to your battery instead of cooking your brakes? Or silently sneaking up on a deer or a bunch of hippies in Toolangi? :) Im in:) :)

My daughter has been hanging out to visit us from SA, her partner has been to one of the hotspot locations. He’s getting tested now, daughter is also booked in for a surgical procedure next week. Probably be postponed now.
They were planned to get here on 1/12, it’s all turned to shit as the border has just been closed by Vic government.

It's a concern. But it's not a surprise what's happened in SA. But Don't you worry , Vic will be there again eventually ... I estimate well before Xmas.
If this thing is as contagious as it's deemed to be ... Considering how quickly a lot of Vic has let their hair down , it is absolutely inevitable . You would be mad to think that it isn't still out there roaming , ready to errupt. It is exactly like the last lock down opening ... Most people wear this aura around them, acting like the virus is gone , vanished , mystically disappeared... Back to normal .
Complacency Level: Hardcore
The beaches , shopping centres , Bunnings, last few days and weeks were like ants nests .
What could possibly go wrong.

Wiseleigh. Its only a good time if you are the seller. For the buyer its a rip off. Last Sunday there were bloody cows shitting on the ground in this block, now today its some sort of nirvana rebadged to rip at the heart strings as a 'lifestyle' block - total BS. Not a single improvement to the block from Sunday until now, not even water. What is the tangible justification?

From what I understand 10G this worker contracted covid in the pizza shop but he originally told the authorities he was a customer. Because they thought he'd only been in there a very short time they thought the strain of Covid was much more volatile than previous covid patterns hence quick decision to shut down. Turns out he was a worker who had spent a lot of time in there, so the strain isn't as bad as they originally thought. Hence now reopening.

was coming home the other night, guy was slowly coming out of a street opposite my street, I had to turn right into my street to get home, he'll stop, he'll stop, he'll stop, shik, he's not stopping. Swung onto the other side of the road and missed each other by inches.

Took the truck down to my local mechanic to get the overdrive gears fitted and after he confirmed yeah, will be fine, just got the call, he got cold feet, rang a friend who gave him the horror story of having to pull the gearbox apart out of the car etc etc, so he can't afford to do the job and run into trouble at this time of year. Well, don't say you know what/how to do it, then back out. Not happy at all. Picking the car up tomorrow, will be looking for a different mob moving forward. Understand his concerns but I am now left in the lurch so to speak. NOT HAPPY JAN

I had a similar experience after I bought my first Patrol. Before I knew about this forum I took it to a local mob to get the needle and Dawes valve fitted and setup. This is before I knew nothing about anything ...
So I told them what I needed fitted and they're like an yeah that's easy we've done a few to fix the over posting problems yadda yadda ...
Dropped the car off and 2 hours later I get a phone call
".. ummm what are we doing here again? .. sorry can't help you we never saw this vacuum mod before ...." ..

Yep, really pissed me off. I could have booked it in elsewhere, tried to help out a family friend, let down badly. I won't have a chance to get it done before Xmas now, if they were a bit more honest with me I would not have cared, but now.... I am trying to get everything sorted before I head up north because frankly., quality of living for the next couple of years is going to take a dive again with the FIFO gig, and the last thing i need after a 2 week flogging is to wasting it sitting around waiting for a job to be done on the truck that should/could have been done before i started back. Anyway, i will see if they want to fit the rear spring stiffeners, and maybe they will change their tune with the overdrive gears and allocate the correct amount of time for the job. They were given everything they needed, were briefed correctly, then i find out they thought the job was to install reduction gears, not the overdrive gears. glad they didn't go that path. I think they are probably just burned out and not thinking right - trying to find some reasons why they performed like they did, bitter pill.
I did ring Marks4x4 this afternoon for an alternate recommendation in my area and they came up with two names, but I will have buckley's chance now before mid Jan at earliest i reckon.

Having a bad day today. i sold a HF radio to a guy in NSW and ebay's preferred freight sender is SENDLE. 5 weeks later the parcel still has not reached him and SENDLE can't find it either. Unbelievable in this day of modern tracking how they cannot find the place in their system where the chain was broken. Now the wait and the piss around for both of us as we sort thru the refund/compensation process. NEVER use these guys, check their website ratings, and they don't have a single phone number you can ring - absolutely at their mercy from start to finish and not that much cheaper than Aust Post.

Well it has ended as best it can I suppose. Ebay have refunded the buyer in full and I keep my sale money. SENDLE unfortunately get to keep their delivery fee. I am going to go the path of making a claim from SENDLE just to try and hold them to account, but really, totally unacceptable. Buyer is without a radio and he now has to find a comparable unit to what he bought, which is going to be very hard at the price I sold it to him.

Picked the vehicle up, and the local workshop is going to do the job on Jan 12, so fresh back from a break and they have nothing booked in, so they can allocate as much time as they think.

Looks like you will all have to put up with me for the foreseeable future after all. What follows is a copy & paste from my facebook page this morning. Grrrrrrr!
A follow on from my last excited & optimistic post about buying the OKA. Another story follows, not the one I wanted nor expected. It is a story of huge disappointment, anger & now after little more than 24 hours to process what happened a sense of relief mixed with the yet to dissipate disappointment of a lost dream we had put so much energy into. This no doubt will become another lengthy post, I believe writing it may be cathartic & helpful to me, & after my previous post I feel the need to explain why I am back in Mutchilba today & not in Taree delivering the OKA to the chap who was going to undertake the transmission change etc for us. It's been another rollercoaster ride. Hold tight & read on!
As planned I flew from Cairns down to Brisbane on Monday to pay for & pick up the OKA to drive it the 600kms to Taree, NSW . It was a nervous time, not because of the amount of money I would be paying or because of any fears about the vehicle or whether I was doing the right thing, but because of the severe weather warnings of dangerous winds & flooding along the whole of the route I needed to drive. Some places had already had up to 600mm in a day, & similar forecast to continue at the time I'd be driving. I was confident about the vehicle & about the seller.
The seller met me as arranged, in Brisbane, & took me to his home where I would spend the night sleeping in the OKA before driving it away the following morning. As on my previous visit I was made welcome & we spent a number of hours going through the OKA to familiarise me with everything as well as eating together & enjoying each other;s company. At mealtime I asked to see the the certificate of Electrical safety for the vehicle's 240v systems he had agreed to get, & was disappointed when , without apology, he told me he had not had it done. Worse was the fact he had not obtained the legally required 'Certificate of Inspection' (the Qld version of a heavy vehicle Roadworthy - or MOT for UK readers) , but "not to worry" he said I can still get it in time for you leave in the morning as planned". This was a relief as I had flight onward from Taree booked & paid for. Half an hour later following a phone call he showed me an email on his phone from the certifier with an attached Certificate & a note to say it had been electronically lodged with the Qld transport authority. Phew! Without this transfer of ownership cannot occur. Later that evening he printed out a copy for me, & I checked it over at about 10pm, just as I was waiting for my laptop to boot up in order for me to transfer funds to him.
My heart sank when I noticed it had an engine number different to what was on the engine in the vehicle, & we quickly reached an impasse with me stating I would not be prepared to risk making payment without such details being correct. He suggested that I drive the vehicle away the following morning but withhold payment until he obtained a correct certificate. I thought this exceptionally trusting & generous of him, but also wondered might happen if a problem arose with the certificate. I had reason to worry as the incorrect certificate was obviously 'dodgy' if for no other reason than it had been sent on the basis of emailed info from the owner, not from an actual inspection. The engine number shown was apparently for the original 4 cylinder motor , even though the certificate stated it had 6 cylinders (as per the all important replacement American import Cummins motor). But still I was intent on keeping to plan to drive the OKA away in the morning.
The seller emailed the certifier & said he would follow this up with a phone call early next morning.
I had a restless night in the OKA, which afforded me time to look at many things in more detail. I laid & mentally constructed the internal modifications I wanted to make.
First thing in the morning I was greeted with "Come & have a cuppa, we need to talk". The tone used was not encouraging & I was immediately concerned. As I walked to the house I note that his wife who had been very hospitable the night before appeared to be avoiding eye contact with me & didn't say a word. I imagined that a correct safety certificate may not be forthcoming until later in the day & resigned myself to a much longer drive in one hit, through the wild weather than I had planned on.
My cup of tea was handed to me with the words "I don't think you are the right sort of person to be an OKA owner". This was out of the blue, I was gobsmacked & confused. I have come to realise that this was an attempt to hold me responsible for the decision that was yet to come. I spluttered & gasped my lack of understanding & attempted to reasonably contradict him. I learned that he had been in contact with the certifier who informed him that the only way to change the certificate was for him to attend a Transport dept office in person & that it was highly likely that they would wish to also sight & inspect the vehicle. At this point I saw my well laid plans disappearing out of the window, but even at this point had not contemplated what was to come!
Out of his shirt pocket the seller produced bundles of hundred dollar notes & a piece of paper. "Here is your deposit & I'll pay for your flight back to Cairns, here are flights available today." I was still spluttering, unwilling to accept that everything I'd planned & hoped for was coming to an end right now. He made it clear he had no intention to present the vehicle to the Transport dept, I thought at the time he meant that day, as he had 'a lot on' but now I think he probably meant 'at all'. As the realisation dawned anger trumped disappointment (although I remained relatively civil, I believe I only used the 'F' word once!). I reminded him of all the costs I had incurred on the basis of the sale agreement we had made, including several flights to & from NSW to check out & drive other OKA's with the Cummins/Allison combo I hoped to get fitted, & to meet the chap who would do the work face to face to discuss & agree on the process. The seller responded with 'how much' & when told simply pulled more cash from his shirt pocket & handed it to me to cover those costs. Truly I was reeling, trying to make sense of the situation.
As I sat at his kitchen table, he went to another room, returning with a paid for flight booking, the plane departing in a little over 90 minutes time & us 45 minutes drive from the airport. "Get your bags" he said, we don't have much time.
As we drove, he seemed far less tense than he had done at the kitchen table. I was angry & felt like telling him so, but instead asked him how he was feeling. "Relieved" he said. "Relieved?" I asked. "Yes, I've been worrying that sooner or later you would discover that the Cummins motor is in fact a Chinese copy" says he. This admission that he had been prepared to deceive me was made in the complete absence of any apology. In fact no apology had been forthcoming about things he had agreed to do & not done, or indeed anything else. I expect he had realised that his offer for me to take the vehicle to Taree prior to payment would see the engine deception discovered as soon as it was looked at there by someone familiar with the Cummins motors (unlike me). All was conducted in a friendly manner - very disconcerting. My gut feeling was that as a successful & wealthy businessman, that anything that didn't fit for him was expendable including people, & that apologies were probably something not in the businessman's repertoire. Such things most likely only represented something never contemplated - an admission of guilt.
The two hour flight & 90 minutes drive back to Mutchilba gave me time to begin processing what had happened, later discussion with Julie & friends helped. I turned over every detail I could recall about the affair & about the vehicle again & again. But the story had so many inconsistencies I struggled to gain the certainty I needed about why this had happened. I even started to blame myself even though I couldn't pinpoint what I had been responsible for. It was a pretty 'shit' experience.
Finally this morning I have reached an understanding which fits. Although I am unwilling to detail all the snippets of info which have led to this understanding for fear of both boring you to tears & risk of litigation from the wealthy seller, I am now confident in my belief.
Unlike my home state of Victoria (& most other states I believe), where vehicle modification approvals are carried out by well qualified motor engineers in a very regulated system, in Queensland any motor mechanic with 10 years experience in the trade can apply to become a 'certifier'. Many have & there are a plethora of one man mobile services offering Certificates of
inspection & Modification plates. A quick search on Google reveals that dodgy certificates & plates are not uncommon.
I now believe that the significant modifications on the OKA (Engine replacement, GVM upgrade, home made fuel tank, change in seating & possibly more) have probably been subject to the same dodgy practice as the Certificate of Inspection, quite possibly through the same certifier. All stuff waiting to 'bite' me down the track when I went to re-register the vehicle in Victoria. I believe the seller knowing that things were at the point of unravelling if an inspection at the Department were to occur, felt 'on a hook' & that the only way to extricate himself from that situation was to get rid of me quickly. And that is just what he did.
I remain angry which is probably important in coming to terms with the 'lost dream'. Some of that anger is with myself for having allowed the 'dream' to blind me until a very late stage of the proceedings, in particular that it was the seller's decision not to proceed, rather than mine. However I do take some solace in the fact that however it happened, I 'dodged a bullet'. If the truth had come to light after I'd handed over the money the situation would have been far worse.
What a bastard! Stuff like this shakes one's faith in humanity, but I expect the trust to return with time. Friends have been good
