Heading away for our Easter camping holiday and half way from Melbourne to the destination near Maffra I noticed a bunch of warning lights illuminated on the dash.
Sub Tank, handbrake and battery lights all on. (2004 GU III)
Stopped and checked the terminal connections were all on tight (as I just had the main battery replaced two days earlier) and everything seemed ok.
Turned the radio off and pushed on hoping for the best. Luckily we were traveling just after lunch and not towing anything, so didn't have to worry about nightfall knowing we were only 1 3/4 hours from the destination.
Got there ok.
My mate who was camping with us, who also happens to be the mechanic who services my car, diagnosed the problem in two minutes.
Alternator had blown a regulator. [emoji35]
First trip away with the dual battery setup and car fridge all hooked up to go and couldn't use it.
Luckily we were in a caravan, so had a fridge to use in the van, but I spent the four days charging my main battery off other people's alternators with jumper leads.
Best of all it didn't stop us getting out and doing some four wheel driving, which I was shattered to think would be out of the question when I discovered the alternator had died.

Sounds about right. I've just fitted my third alternator. This one has a higher rating than standard so will see how it goes. You havr got to watch out when a regulator goes. My first one blew the reg but the alternator kept charging at 19+ volts. Had to get home so it cost me an alternator and both batteries.

I can highly recommend the 'Quicktifier 420 or the 210' amp diode pack for improving alternator reliability. I have run one for the last 3 yrs, admittedly they car has only done about 5K klm, however just ordered my second one for the second alternator. The additional diodes help with heat reduction when charging and well worth the expense. The 420 amp unit costs $149USD plus $75USD shipping to Aust. The unit does not increase the alternator output to 420amp, it simply adds more diodes that spread the current load to lower limits. The diodes are specially made for the application and are a higher temp unit, so for example your existing alternator may have 6 diodes, then you add a further 12 in parallel, so the alternator charge is across 18 instead of 6. I have found the diodes can be a problem in hot under bonnet temps, especially when fitted with larger engines.

Thanks for that PeeBee, ill keep it in mind . The second fail I had was my fault because I drowned the car. This last one I just dont know, was ok when I came home the night before and parked it. Got in next morning turned the key and merry christmas on the dash lights. First one dont know. Nissan did it under warranty.

There is an additional cost of around $100 AUD when the box gets here as the 3 phase output from the alternator needs to be hooked up from alternator to the Quicktifier unit - there are a couple of utube segments if you want to do that yourself, or pay the auto elec to do it

Been dodging the "death wobble" bullet on both patrols I've owned over the years ... Lol.
Been very lucky!!
... Until now.
Last few days at 85-90kmh the steering wheel shakes the blood out of me.
It arrived out of nowhere , and I haven't touched a thing under there ... Got the wheels re balanced today to eliminate that and they were spot on.
Let the bush elimination fun begin . Lol

Been struggling with a contractor on site for the past 5 days, 3 injuries, attention span of a dying goldfish, great guy but green as a cucumber. his co-workers raised a few issues around his attention to detail - he is a registered scaffy, so he needs to be spot on - guys have to check his work etc. Anyway, he goes back to camp on the night before his fatigue/rest day, gets cut stupid drunk, actually gets told to leave the bar and settle down, then continues thru the night being a dick, drinks all the next day in camp, and gets reported 4 times for abusive behaviour. So, he fronts for work today, happy as a puppy. I decide to alcohol test him - he is fine, and hydration test him, he's fine, so as a final precaution get him drug tested - bah bahhhhh, non negative result for cocaine - what a bloody dick. So send him back to camp as he cant work until his B sample gets analysed in Mt Isa on Monday. Site and Contract manager consulted, they want him off the site - 36K for a charter flight to Mt Isa - WTF and the project would have to foot the bill. Nope, not happening, so he is back at camp, and I have to drive the turd to Mt Isa tomorrow to catch a flight at 5.30pm then drive back - 4hrs each way - its times like this I really like the idea of summary execution. Stupid stupid man, not happy. And these tests are very very reliable. Initial urine test also flagged cocaine positive, as did the saliva test. What a total waste of time.

2 straight through lanes 2 right hand turn lanes, traffic light 2 turn right red and its banked back a mile so some wank drives down the 2nd straight trough lane that has a green lights pulls 2 the right and stops dead in the middle of the intersection and puts his hazard lights on as soon as the right hand turn light goes green hazard comes off, turns right. What an absolute wanker...... and how come I have never thought about doing that :(

Unless they have already pull it down, they really won't know if it is either blown hd gasket, cracked head, block or combination. May not be as bad mate. As she has been opened up earlier for rebuild, maybe worth having a look at it.

He firmly believes the gasket is fine and the head has failed. I will know more tonight when I see him though.

I'm feeling better after picking up the car this arvo. George laid out a few options which I hadn't considered, an engine conversion being one of them. He has told me he would do it with me, all up the cost could be less than 10k.
The more I think about it the more it makes sense. George thinks an LS conversion would be the most cost effective and reliable, and I'm not sold on a TD42 swap over, some of you with those still have your issues. Still deciding what my next move will be but there are more than just two options now which makes me feel much better.

Damn mate not good, im sure you'll work ou what path you want to go down eventually.
I was at this cross road 2 years ago.
In the end i opted for the barra due to its excellent low down torque, power and reliability... The barra also has great potential to get good power with minimal mods and i will be happy to answer any questionsif need be... if you're in melbourne i am also happy to take you out for a drive...
Since i did the conversion 2 years ago it has done 2 weeks in tassies west coast , snow trips, Victorian high country numerous times and plenty of long distance travels including some nav run events...
To be honest with you ive had 1 problem (electrical issue) where it left me in the bush but wasmt related to the engine but apart from that its been fanasticif youre happy to go against the grain as its something different...
It is not as common as the ls which means there is probably less info on it but these days more and more people are doing them if you check out the barra patrols page on Facey.
The ls is also a vsry sensational engine and conversion with heaps more info out there and kits available... nothing sounds like a v8 but truth be told i love driving this thing like miss daisy and no one bats an eyelid until you smoke them off the lights...
Best of luck

Picked up the GQ last Thursday after throwing three grand at it for a major service plus a few bits and pieces , spent all weekend cleaning it up inside and starting to pack for the Kimberly trip .
Had to go into town this morning and the bloody thing cut out halfway in and wouldn't restart so I'm thinking for a split second what have they done to it and then had a horrible feeling could I be out of fuel the gauge only works when full but I've always relied on the low fuel warning light .
Sure enough out of fuel and because I cranked it the lines were full of air and a bitch to get going and keep going .
Now what's made me angry is with the draws and partitions in the back I can't get to the sender unless I drop the tank and that pisses me off the most .

oh dear mate, what happened?
Actually think we just flooded it, moved it from under the carport done some stuff 2 it moved it back, then later on in the day Erin went 2 start it.... just wound over would go 2 start but wouldn't fire. Had a look on the net and it seems 2 be a common problem if u only move it a short distance the can flood. So foot 2 the floor wound it over nothing, tried again nothing.... by this stage the battery was not happy, pulled the battery out of the corolla and hooked it up via jumper leads, foot 2 the floor it.... nothing, tired it again and fired up with a big puff of smoke, smoke cleared and seems fine.
Taking it 2 the mechanics in a few week for a check over 2 make sure all is ok, won't worry about driving it until then.

So just went to help a staff member with email. Problem needs Outlook setup. Turn on PC open Outlook, it's already setup, so I guess that their password has expired, they've changed it, but not updated Outlook, correct appraisal.
New password supplied was incorrect. Huffed at by staff member, just use the password the computer remembered. I say, no, it'll be your old password. They disbelieved me. Given new password, that didn't work either. Staff member walks into office, huffed at again as if to say you're an incompetant useless annoyance who obviously doesn't know anything.
Staff member tries all passwords supplied, none work. Starts going through their list of passwords, stumbles across one that works and wasn't supplied.
I politely pointed out that once I'm given the things you've setup I can certainly configure things for you.

So just went to help a staff member with email. Problem needs Outlook setup. Turn on PC open Outlook, it's already setup, so I guess that their password has expired, they've changed it, but not updated Outlook, correct appraisal.

WARNING - This happened to me yesterday. Paypal credentials hacked. My delivery address for goods had been changed and I didn't know. I purchased an item and the delivery address came up correct on the Paypal transaction record, however the actual delivery address sent to the vendor is an address in the UK. I only found out as the vendor made contact to advise the shipping would not be free, as it was to an overseas address - goods coming from Bris to melb. I jumped onto Paypal to report it, then checked my account and found absolutely dozens of times the delivery address has been changed or updated. Don't ask me how or to what purposes as to date everything has arrived, however I am now locked in a battle with the vendor who is refusing to send the goods to the correct Melb address as he is bound to send to the address he has received from Paypal. I have opened a claim with Paypal and am in contact with the vendor - bit of a stalemate going on, hope to get it resolved. I have changed the passwords already, might have to simply cancel the transaction if the vendor does not pull his head in. Painful to say the least. So, check your Paypal credentials and profile for sure.

Yes Sergai in London is now the proud wearer of a set of RayBan sunglasses for 90 GBP, hope they suit his look. Paypal and ebay accounts both hacked, so password change. He also changed the contact email address so any correspondence from either ebay or paypal did not reach me. Paypal has refunded the money, and ebay have paid the two transactions I was unable to complete today due to being unable to change/remove the London address. Dirty dirty dog.

I must of tried to login as they were changing things as my password recovery email address s so mine. I have no turned on 2 factor authentication on every account possible now. Pita.
I rang ebay and advised what happened and they said so the "correct email I just changed it back to" is the hackers address. No no I have fixed it myself but want to report what's happened. Next to useless and they couldn't comprehend what happened.

it's about 198km round trip to bunnings, well at least the one we went to yesterday. there is one closer, it's only about 180kms round trip.

My local Bunnings up until 5 years ago was reasonably big but not huge, and was staffed with people who knew their shit. Then they built a mega huge Bunnings closer to me and closed the old one. They don't stock any more products than the smaller one used to, just twice as much of the same stuff. And now when I'm looking for advice I can't find anybody to assist, so I have to go on a mission and collar the "welcome" girl at the bloody entrance 200m away, who pages someone from the smoko room where they're all sitting around pulling each other, they come out and inevitably don't know shit every single time. Not angry, just bamboozled as to whom is technically in the wrong when a divvy van (no lights or sirens) tries to overtake well above the speed limit on my inside left in a quite fairly wide single service lane to a highway tucker shop stop.
Admittedly I only noticed him at the last millisecond between head checks and whilst indescively 20kmph finally parking left afront of the shop but crikey he swung hard right around our machine trailer and gave me heaps of gestures before speeding off again.
I know our boys in blue are out there honestly doing a great job but any poor kid could have run out of that tucker stop chasing a tennis ball and copped either of us!

Our Bunnings is that shit they’ve had the wrong timber on the shelf to what the tag says for the last eight months and even after me telling them on numerous occasions they still have not changed it.
Then I go down the electrical items isle and was looking at some new gpo’s and one of the workers comes up and starts ranting on how it’s illegal for me to instal a gpo because I’m not licenced. I replied with so your happy to supply me with the gun and bullets but not happy for me to pull the trigger? Why sell this to the public then? Really? And it seems every time I go in there they are out of stock on what I need. Murphy’s law... lucky they usually have someone there who knows how to cook sausages.

Yeah thats annoying... I could only but laugh at the amount of tight arses on FB when I was selling an old VY Commy for $1500 with no RWC and three months reg. I'd get texts with offers of 1K or less and one guy even went the effort of offering $1500 as long as it came with 12months reg AND a road worthy certificate. Yer right.
In your case mate, I'd just tell them to be there at a certain time, give them a 20 minute window, and if they are not there in that time, tough. Dont wait for them. If there keen, they'll be there.

this arvo, started the bike after being on center stand all day, checked the oil level... plenty. started it up, noise was there for about 5 seconds then made an indescribable noise and all of a sudden motor is purring again. drove it skeptically out on to the road, figuring noises and problems and just dont fix themselves on vehicles. sure enough, noticed the battery light on (i figure alternator, but was unsure it bikes even had alternators lol), and called in to the bike mech who rwc it 3 weeks ago. he wasnt interested in looking at it, but pointed me in the right direction for someone who was. rang him as he was 20 mins away, and surely a bike wouldnt last that long with no alternator, and the low beam headlight permanently on. he said check if its charging with a multi meter, sure enough it wasnt. convinced the mechanic i was at to take a look at it, and its now with him. have hired a bunnings ute to get be to and from work tomorrow. hopefully the other car im buying gets the rwc sorted soon and i can just start driving that!

Yes I talk to them. Telstra get an online complaint form, then 1 phone call and it is straight to the ombudsman. They're a waste of space too. Telstra have admitted to me that the network is oversubscribed and they have no plans on doing anything about it.

Got an new aluminium roof rack a few months ago for the cape trip. Fitted it a few days before we left; put a spare wheel, 20l water container and recovery tracks on it - well short of the claimed 200kg capacity.
By the time we reached the cape, one mount was completely broken and several others cracked.
The rack itself is fine - it is just the way this is attached to the mounting brackets with just 3 small areas of 1mm aluminium. Just too fragile.

Couple of weeks ago I had movement felt coming back thru steering whl @ 80kph and took the easy path first and had full whl balance now fine. From a glance every thing else seemed OK_all good.
How violent can the all quoted "death wobbles" be noticed within reason (eg: bonnet/front panels start to gitter)?

I think usually the driver should manage the wobble by increasing or reducing speed to minimise the effect.
In me shit box GQ on the way from VHC I once tried to see what would happen if I kept the shakes going. Well besides all my insides nearly coming out my rear, I though all the panels and windows would give way...it was farked...bad, really bad

'Death Wobbles' are an Harmonic Effect so if the outside factors remain constant they just get worse and worse
If left unchecked IE you don't speed up or slow down to change the harmonics then they can be violent enough to shake the entire car quite severely, certainly enough to scare your pucker valve into slamming shut.
I had a case of death wobbles on my Tray Back that were significantly more violent than the gnarliest corro's I have ever driven on.
The vehicle was frightening at anything like a constant speed between 75 to 85 KPH but happy to sit below or above that speed

Yeah I am putting it down to crap quality rubber. All 4 are compressed and collapsed. The arms where in the right way and the thing was rear steering it's head off.
The bushes where after market off eBay for $50 a set of 8. Damn it. Pushed out the uppers at the same time which had 320k factory bushes in. I have grabbed a set of OEM bushes from Roadrunner for $190 which where supposed to be here Friday but will arrive monday so will replace them all again. The original factory arms are back in it for a week of freeway.
Those bushes had commuted down the freeway for 8 weeks!!!! No off-road at all. The only thing they copped was a heavy right foot by Naomi.

Nah I tighten the at ride weight. The left side had fully collapsed and that made the rear diff out of alignment. It would drive ok but had a really twitchy ass. Was thinking it might have been my front end actually as I didn't expect those bushes to be wrecked. Like my caster mysteriously went to shit.
Put the factory arms back in ( so nearly dumped them a heap of times!!) And it's much better.

I have never been conned or scammed for money before and in the last 10 or so years never run any sort on anti virus programs on any of my devices. They are just a scam in them self...I agree, more clever clicking needed I thinks!!

I dunno how they are doing it or where they are getting my card from - like the latest was at a Dodge Dealership in Florida?? Anyway I have added the second stage verification as recommended, so maybe that's the last of it.

Some ****** ran into the back of the patrol today... not their fault, the person behind them. 3 way rear end with me being the receiver..
Totally buckled my homemade rear bar.. hopefully insurance will replace it but that's not the point. All that work for some inconsiderate **** to run into it. I didn't even get to bash it properly in the bush.

Wife's bloody POS Mazda 6 makes me angry.
Had to jump start her car last thursday night, strange as the battery is less than 12 months old. Get it home, turn the car off, go to start it nothing. Put my charger on it and instantly I can start the car. Ok the battery has dropped a cell maybe, get a new battery, nothing. I check all the earth points with my ratchet all tight. I start changing over relays. Nothing. Then Catherine noticed sparks from near the battery when i tried to start it again. One of the earth connection was lose under the bolt head. I remove it, clean up the thread, new bolt and clean the earth strap connection and bang it starts. Yee haa!!!
I get a call this morning, car is dead again. Ugh!!!
Its used 2.5ltrs of oil too in under 5k so its time for a trade in. Just need it to hold out for atleast another six months if we can though. Not quite ready to get a new car right now,

Most likely the open circuit has damaged the alternator regulator (or circuit in the ECU if that is the case).
What grade of oil are you running?

I bloody hope not....
I just chucked some 15w40 in now. Supposed to be 5w40. A bit thicker should slow its oil usage down a little.

I have 20w50 in the Old Trol, just to get the oil pressure up. Yes it uses a bit more fuel but this thing has a lot of mileage.

The Maxima started to miss and the Engine Light came on.
After investigation by my Garage it was ascertained that the Ignition Coil on Cylinder 2 was faulty.
Decided to replace Ignition Coils on all Cylinders and replace new Spark Plugs and Rocker Cover gaskets.
Parts came to $1,428 and Labour $340
Total of $1,768
Could of got away with one Ignition Coil but decided to replace on all 6 Cylinders.
No Pub for the next couple of months LOL

Sad situation, dogs (working or not) just have to be under control not roaming. Couple of dogs next door causing havoc, one herding and second does the hit (not good). Have Kelpies and always aware of their where abouts and even they have made a runner when younger, grateful no untoward incident.

Had that problem with our Jack Russell, she got in and gave a sheep hell. Ranger was called, we went and saw the farmer and bought the sheep from him, said he could keep it as we couldn't do anything with it. Sheep recovered.
Ranger didn't do anything.
We had a neighbours dog from up the street coming up to our back door and running off with my work boots. I rang the Ranger, they couldn't give a sheep. Told him the boots are worth more than an average sheep, still didn't give a stuff.

Couldn't praise our rangers enough. They were on site within 25 minutes, caged the dogs and drove me to the paddock. They treated the first ewe, and put the second down after a careful assessment. It mustn't be an easy job, with days like that.

This happened to me in August as well. I was pulled over and informed that my registration had expired 5 days prior.
No warnings now, if you get pulled over for that they issue you with an infringment.
I contested the fine and I'm awaiting the decision.

Bloody ISPs. Whenever there's an NBN maintance outage our ISP still bills us. We had an outage planned for a week. I argue that they're not offering what they advertise and that's access to the Internet and we shouldn't have to pay during an outage. I may as well face into the oncoming wind and urinate.

Ported means, in this environment, transferred. It can be from ISP to ISP, client to client, provider to provider. The term is most commonly used when you move from your current ISP to a new ISP, they port/transfer your connection from one to another.

Think PeeBee got a little confused with your original post rusty_nail, you said you can't get WiFi, he mistook it for wireless.
I'm assuming because of the port you have no internet service at all until it is fixed, that's pretty shit Nic, so I'm not the only one on standard ADSL still, are you on ADSL1 or 2?

seems I didn't get a job upgrade i went for last week.
most expensive interview i've ever done, about $800 out of pocket just to get to it, accom, fuel, lost days pay, meals etc.
at my age that signals the end of progression in my line of work, where I am now is as good as it's going to be until i give up all together.
i'd been wanting to improve my position for years and this opportunity came up.
i don't know what i'm going to do now, i still have a position & will until I leave, but this role has fucken ruined me.

Yeah i went for a big job a few months ago. I am 20 years in with the company i am with and above me a a flat line. I put 8 hours at least into the application and i believed it stood out as a strong application. I did not even get to first round. I was surprised. It would have been a career change at 50 but i was excited by this new venture. Oh Well, try and carve out what i have for another 15 years i suppose.

Yeah ARB did that to me when I went for an interview at their head office three years ago. The general manager asks why i want to work for ARB, so you just tell them what they want to hear. Then he asks what do I hope to get out of working for ARB. My response was, "your job, I don't intend on staying on in a low role, I intend to climb the ladder to the top". Needless to say the look on his face was priceless, and yep, they didn't bother telling me if I got the job.
Just as well as I found out they pay was a measily $45k p/a, plus expected overtime. The job I have now leaves this for dust thank god.
