Got a letter from nissan saying my patrol has been recalled. something about a passenger airbag. oh how delightful only took them 11 years to realise.

What was the recall for? Have you got a VIN number range for the recall mate as I may not get a letter but have a younger GU than yours.

Seeing the temp gauge over half way.

Have only been driving it to the station and back about 12 km return per day the last 2 months. Had to go a bit further today and while stopped at the lights the temp kept raising up to about 3/4. Once started driving quickly went back to its normal spot just under half. There was a cool breeze today.

Once home had a good look around and noticed the fan has cracks around it. I have ordered a new one, but not 100% sure that this will fix the problem, could be that the clutch is not completely engaging? If that doesn't fix it I will check rad cap, then thermostat.

After that I think it will need a bit more digging around. Hopefully not......

I'd just do the viscous coupling at the same time mate. Unless the fan is spinning on the coupling then the cracks won't make a huge difference. They weren't too expensive from patrolapart when I got mine...

Coupling feels OK, firm. I'll rather not change things if I don't need to.

Did my boiling water test with the thermostat and once it was fully opened, I dropped it into cold water and after more than 2 minutes it was still about 2mm open.

Looks like a new thermostat should fix it.

@ JayCee, If your clutch fan is U/S you can rebuild it with some fluid from Toyota.
Gently hose out the base [bottom] of your radiator dont use much pressure
keep hosing till water runs clean. While you're at it you might as well hose the whole radiator

Drove it to the station and back again today and popped the bonnet as soon as I stopped this time touched the top of the radiator, both sides of the cap, hot touched the cap warm....

Will get another cap and try that first. Going to change the fan and wash out the radiator. If that doesn't fix it, (I'm confident it will) I change the thermostat.

Thanks TD, but if it was the clutch fan I'll probably just buy a new one. I know of some that have rebuilt theirs, some have worked and some haven't.

I'm failing to see your point Kat

Isn't that the whole point of "CASUAL" employment, so the person can choose when they want 2 work.

If a company wanted people 2 work when they wanted them 2 work than they should employ permanent employees not casuals.

Not entirely correct. Casual employment is that the company doesn't have enough work year round for a full time permanent position. So if your on a casual workforce, you can't complain that there's no work when you knocked back a job a couple of months prior.

I can see your point, Toddie. 'Casual', I guess is open to interpretation. Our 'casual' work force also comes under the banner of 'on call'. You are under contract to work when the company has the work for you, not when ever you feel like working. They are also employed to cover for the permanents, when they have training or annual leave. And those that work when ever they want, have no right to complain when they constantly knock back work, and the phone stops ringing.

Understand exactly what you are saying.

Do the unpopular rosters, work when called on if you possibly can. Then the person doing the rosters will put you at the top of their go-to list.

Do the opposite and you can fall off the list all together.

A reality in the workforce.

Both our girls worked at McDonalds and got plenty of work when others complained of no work.

It's really not that hard to work it out.

What a dick I am.
Another thought I had was to check for an air lock. Got it up to temp, popped off the cap slowly and couldn't see any coolant. Filled up a bottle with water and thought a little top up may be needed. Nearly two liters later and 20 minutes of idle no air pockets. Cap back on and all good now.

I did check the overflow bottle earlier and it was more than half full, why didn't it take the coolant from there. What or where are the max-min levels.

Park uphill, and invert a coke bottle with the butt cut out into your radiator to lift your fill point, being dual fuel also crack the hose to the gas converter
air can get trapped there as well. Instead of using "TEE" joiners I recommend using "Y" joins it will stop cavitation and aid in water flow

My cooling system was losing water after I replaced the head gasket and had the radiator reconditioned.

It turned out to be that the lip on the filler neck wasn't level.

When the system was hot, it forced coolant into the overflow, and sucked air back in. I had to get a piece of fine grain wet'n'dry paper and stretch it over a flat block of wood and attach it so it was also flat.

I then sanded the lip so it was level.

It took a number of times to fully bleed the air from the system too. I had to drive the car for a couple of minutes after each bleeding and then repeat the process.

Also check that the contoured cap locking flanges under the lip are not worn or slightly bent.

Just went to have the new Coopers fitted to find the tyre place ordered the wrong rims for the TB48, The rims are making contact with the front calipers stopping the wheel from turning. I was hoping to have these fitted for my trip next weekend. Its the tyre places mistake and they acknowledge it, unfortunately I'll have to take a day off next week to have them fitted on new rims assuming the 'correct' rims are available.

It wasn't today but it's on my mind so I'm having a rant about it......

Bloody young people in 4x4's........all full of cash & testosterone & no brains. And I'm extra angry because for making me think this way I feel like an old fart at the ripe old age of freakin 35!!!!!!

I happen to live a stone's throw (almost literally) from what is becoming a popular 4x4 bog hole/muddy swamp. What seems attractive about it I have no idea. It's not even aesthetically pleasing. Anyhoo a few weeks ago, around 7pm I got a call from a mate who responded to a facebook (another pet hate of mine) request looking for a recovery in said swamp........multiple vehicles involved apparently. I politely refused, reasoning that if they were stupid enough to go in there after dark, they deserve to be stuck. Then the girlfriend & kids gave me the guilts. It'll be fun they said. Yeah right!!! I grew up on a farm I know how treacherous swamp is. Even a tractor would get stuck in that. I just cleaned my car a few days prior too. Against my better conscience I went. As I entered the area, there were 4x4's everywhere. Most were too scared to go right in. As I pulled up, another mate with a double diff locked 80 pulled up. He was driving past & saw the cars. There were so many ppl & cars it was hard to tell who was stuck & who wasn't. I noticed one particular GU patrol attempting to snatch out his mate. There were people standing around everywhere. Next thing he rev's the ring out of this thing & launches it. PERTWANG went the snatch strap......like I didn't see that coming. At that I ran away. I'm not losing my head for some young twat!!! Then they tied it in a knot & a 2nd attempt. From 50M away I heard it snap again. Finally they got a new strap & a slower attempt & they made it. Once they were on solid ground I had a tactful go at him. I explained how a snatch strap is an elastic band & you need to let it do it's work, which doesn't happen at full throttle. I also told him since he's the one doing the recovery he has a duty of care to the public. There were 50+ ppl standing within 10M of the action. I've seen snatch straps near on take ppl's head's off. I told him his duty of care is to make sure everyone is standing back. At least then it's not his fault if they don't listen. No recovery is worth a life. I'm not one of those ultra safety conscious ppl. I hate worksafe with a passion. But there's a HUGE difference between stupidity & common sense. On top of this, once they got out the hoards left & there was a guy still there stuck & everyone just left him because he wasn't part of that group. So my mate & I, who had the most capable cars anyway, went in to the deepest, boggiest part of the swamp where he was........in a suzuki sierra too. How he got even that far I couldn't work out. Apparently someone had tried to get him out & only got him stuck worse.....so they took off & left him. I got right up close to him & then suddenly sank. I was being lazy & wanted to snatch him instead of winching him. So my mate with the 80 winched both of us out & we went home to a beer & a karcher session. The next day I realised the remote control for my stereo had fallen out somewhere. I went back but no luck. That's what you get for helping twits I thought. Luckily I know ppl in the audio industry & got another one free the next day.

Since then there has been a facebook request for help almost every 2nd night. I'm thinking of putting up signs around the place offering recoveries for $100. I break the $100 down as follows:

$5 fuel
$45 for my time
$5 wear & tear on my gear
$10 car cleaning costs
$35 for being so stupid to go in there alone

.........................The end

There are heaps of signs like that over this way mostly on the beaches but instead of $100 it's more like $500.

I think it's that high to deter people being stupid enough to go down at certain times of the year and put themselves and the recoverer in dangerous positions.

I personally think it's a great idea as long as you get the money upfront.

Epic Fail.

I ordered some upper spring seat insulators, and they got the bottom ones, as that is all the company they deal with makes.

I also got a loan of some spring compressors so I could fit the insulators

I decided to try slipping a piece of inner tube in to see if the noise stopped. That turned out to be a bad decision ...

I dropped the bottom shock mount, and the sway bar, and proceeded to use the spring compressors, but they started to flex, more than the spring.

I undid them and undid the panhard arm, to get a bit more clearance, but the last ten-eleven mm of the thread stripped off. :furious:

Having no way to get into town (my deadly treadly is kaputz at the moment), I had to file the wrecked thread down so the nut would fit. Luckily I have a small triangular file and was able to fashion the start of the thread. (Phew).

After gently getting the nut to fit, I found that the nylock just misses the thread. I reassembled the panhard and drilled a hole through the end for a cotter pin to fit as a bit of a insurance.

I have had to fit a thin inadequate pin, because unfortunately the drill bit that fits the beefier pin is missing, so now I have to get cleaned up and head into town again. :(

Couldn't agree more. Thankfully I'm living close to work at the moment, but you know most politicians won't be affected. Not an even way to tax society at all. Some country people are really gonna cop the brunt of this.

Yep, & I just found out that the land will be developed in the next 18mths as part of some bullcrap gov't scheme to allow low income earners to afford a new house. Like we need more low income earners in this area. If I could, I'd sell my house & move up the hill a bit.

What's even worse are all the dickheads on dirt bikes who seem to think it's a great place to ride for hrs on end but always seem to disappear before the cops show up. Not to sound like a part pooper, I've got dirt bikes myself but I don't ride near ppls homes, pissing everyone off. I dunno what's worse, 4x4's & dirtbikes or low income earners which 2 yrs later will end up being another Middle Swan but right on our door steps, devaluing my property. Low income earners can all go live in Gosnells & leave the beautiful Swan Valley to uphold it's reputation. It was bad enough in 2008 when homeswest bought 180 houses in this area. I've been here since 2002 & it was a nice place to live until the last few yrs. Morally I can't say the truth but you can imagine where I'm going with this.......................

Watching a documentary on SBS3, about the seafood we eat. Farmed prawns from Thailand are fed "Trash Fish", which is basically any living thing netted up from the ocean floor. The fisherman take juvenile fish, worms urchins etc. They leave nothing behind. There is extensive use of anti-biotics at the farms too.

Next time you eat prawns from Thailand, (on your pizzas), remember, you are what you eat...

He's still reporting about prawns. He went on an Aussie trawler. Man, the bycatch is huge, and mostly dead by the time it is returned, but it is considered sustainable. They are also looking at ways to reduce the bycatch. They have excluders for bigger animals such as turtles and sharks.

Well Feck me, try 2 with a different set of rims and they're still contacting with the brake callipers. So much for their database that listed both sets of wheels as fitting the TB48, if it wasn't for the fact the original wheels are 16" I would be doubting what I ordered. Halloween has made me angry, our neighborhood group sent out signs to put on your letterbox if you were planning to have treats to give kids, so the wife thought she would be nice and bought some bags of snack size chocolate bars and stuck the sign up.
Had a couple of groups come to the door and she gave them their treats then she had some young teenagers come, she gave them 3 small chocolate bars each and after an insincere thank-you she heard them as they walked up the driveway grumbling about how stingy we are, ungrateful little a$$holes.
This will be the last year we have anything to do with Halloween, they can go buy their own chocolates.

A friend is considering putting their 14mth old English Stafford to sleep because allegedly he isn't good with small children !! grrrrr

I don't know the full story but he allegedly bit their 4yr old whilst she was on the trampoline and had another go when she was on the swing - how badly or full circumstances I don't know

This dog came to them not long ago & was an inside dog who slept on the bed of his previous owners 3yr old!!!! Now he's an "outside" dog who I doubt very much gets too much attention and they blame him for being nippy at the kids????

Sooooooo pissed off !!!

Same with our neighbours who have a blue cattle dog (probably about 6mths old) - he never gets played with, you never see them spending any time training him. He's a tard ornament that gets screamed at when he's naughty & OMG the barking when they aren't home is atrocious !!

NO TRAINING, NO UNDERSTANDING of how a "pack" works and NO FREEKING SENSE!! ... Some people shouldn't have dogs and whilst I love my friends I can't believe for 1 second this incident today is the dogs fault !!!!

One of my biggest hates is looking at gumtree at the freebies and seeing all the giveaway dogs. Why because they rent and can't get a house that allows pets, maybe you should have thought about that first! Or they just had kids or don't have time for them anymore.

After enduring weeks of bad TV reception I finally cracked it with my 20 + year old TV antenna. The signal amplifier I had bought a few weeks ago only just made some channels work better.

On Friday I bought 18 metres of quad shield coax, 2 fittings and a phased array antenna.

I pulled the old gear off and fitted the new lot.
After turning the telly on I hit the auto tune. Yep, you guessed it... the signal was still dropping out on some stations.

I went outside and adjusted the antenna position. The reception was better, bit it still dropped out on about half the channels.

After an hour of running inside, outside and climbing ladders, and listening to the TV through an open window, I could only get marginal reception and a few channels still dropping out.

I got hold of a TV expert on the phone and he reckons he is snowed under until next Monday, but he gave me some advice on what to check.

There are two other blokes in the area, but I've heard one is as useful as a chocolate fire guard, the other poor bugger is on sick leave until December. I had no choice but to persevere with my trouble shooting, or put up with crappy viewing for another week.

I pulled the antenna down and double checked my work and also disassembled the brand new array. I found that one component wasn't clipped on properly and would have gone AWOL in a stiff wind, so I had to modify the plastic bracket.

ALL of the screws holding the receptor array were also loose, as well as the nylock nuts that held the connectors to their mounts.

I erected the antenna and re-tuned the TV... It was worse!

I was banging my head into the steel poles by this time.

Getting flustered, I turned the telly volume right up again and I tried one more time to rotate the antenna to a better position.

Hey Hey! The signal came good. Whoo hoo! I proceeded to tighten the mounts and the telly immediately began to drop out. Huh?

:jawdrop:

I pulled the system down again and undid the array mount. I made up a cylindrical insulator from two pieces of poly pipe. Then I slipped them over the pole and put about ten layers of electrical tape on over the plastic.

I mounted the array and erected the antenna. This time the signal was perfect when I tightened the pole to the house.

I could have save 180 bucks worth of gear and weeks of piddling around for the sake of 20 cents worth poly pipe and a bit of tape. Bang Head

Halloween or, all hallows eve, is older than Christmas and Easter. It's a combination of the Mexican day of the dead festival and the British Pagan hallows eve tradition.

The bloke that investigated Prawns last week (Whats the catch with Mathew Evans on SBS) has had a result with one Pizza chain in Sydney now using Sustainable Aussie prawn which is good.
He is now investigating Flake and the fact that even endangered species are lumped in and sold to us under the name.

He also showed some footage of 'Live Finning'. This is where a shark is landed, the fins cut off and the shark is dumped. Some of the poor buggers take two days to die. Millions of shark die this way.
People in Eastern Asia pay big bikkies for the dried fin. He even found whale shark fins in a shop too.

Now he's after a proper labelling system.

Wait until it comes dude. I never had the dry spell problem quite the opposite :p. But I do 80% of the cooking regardless and I do all the washing, this was how it was pre pregnancy as well. I also have to do all our animals no as well.

Haha. Well rubber is softer so while it will crack and wear for the most part it will stay in place and look flogged but still there. Urethane is harder and when worked hard can crack and fall apart quickly and actually fall out completely. However for most things urethane will be ok and won't be a problem. But if doing a lot of trips outback etc then either will flog out but rubber will be a little more reliable.

Thinking how I am going to rage at the suppliers on the phone about it, I thought to check the inverter. All blank. Checked the isolator on the panels for any water damage. Dry. Checked the switch board, all good. Then range the mod who installed it back in 2011. The inverter we have, Solatra, are than back the coming making them went bust from so many returns.
So. We are left to pay $475 for a new inverter, even though the old one is / was still under warranty.

Nu Energy wa the company we went through back in 2011. When my wife rang them today and said the screen was blank they knew straight away and said all of the Solatra inverters were doing the same thing. Technically still in warranty, 5 years but Solatra have gone bust and are no longer around.

Mudski, there's no way you should be paying for another one. If it's under warranty then they have to supply you with another. If they can't supply you with another Solatra because they've gone bust then they have to supply you with a different make. Google Nu Energy mate, there's heaps of complaints about their service and they've already had trading standards (or whatever theyre called) onto them.

Just been on the phone with them. They said while I do have a case, it will take months before anything will be done about it. They said its not just a case of filing the complaint and its sorted... So its a no win situation really. So I file a case, wait 2+ months and continue to no produce any solar, in the best time to best sucking up the rays and get no buy back credits or, pay for it and have it fitted within a week or two.

If it was a known fault they should have put out a recall notice on them. I know what I'd be doing but only you can decide what the next course of action is

If it was winter. I would just let the Ombudsmen take its course. But being the time of year it is now, if I do this, I still aren't going to win. I'm losing $250 a month now with no solar buy back. As hard as it is to swallow, I think I will be better off just paying and getting it fixed. Sucks I know but I will be up and running even before the paperwork gets looked at by the ombudsmen.

Did you ask if you would be eligible for compensation for lost $ in solar ?

I'd probably pay it as well I reckon. I'd certainly be making a complaint to the ombudsman as well though. Never know what they might do.

Yeah I did. The response was. How far do you want to take it? But compensation was more of a fight to get. To be honest I don't have time to fight it. I might be having a fight with Mt.Hotham over this fine they decided to give me for not having a pass on the last day of the ski season when there was no one attending the ticket box. I wrote them a letter explaining it all and told them, I a nice way, there is no way I am paying the fine. I am expected to hear from them very soon.

Oh they were nailed to a wall this morning and Brad has just finished skinning them alive - imagine if child services had seen that ?? That scared the crap OUTTA them - "but we didn't think about that" WELL HELLO you twits !! 2 worst case scenarios a) child services take you away because we clearly are unfit parents who allow that kinda behaviour or b) someone slipped, 1 ends up dead and the other has to live with that for the rest of their lives ...

The pic has been deleted, the friend deleted it seconds after he got it Cuz he was horrified and both girls, we believe, now sufficiently understand how God dam STUPID it was!!!!

I probably shouldn't be repeating it here but was so god dam angry at them and they know it. Seems Brad is actually scarier than me!!! Talias therapist has been informed and she too will be addressing the THINK BEFORE YOU DO ....

No offense but isn't it usually unruly boys who pull crap like this? Not relatively well behaved girls ??? GRRRRRRRRRRRR

you know my thoughts on this matter Jason, stay strong.
I believe they are trying to call your bluff, you have medical evidence that states your condition
signed by a surgeon not some hick in an office who wouldnt even know your name. you are only
12317 for example, I'm behind you if you need anything .
I get freeken wild when dorks in offices can control your fate, I hope to god they all get back pain
and start whinging about it and no one hears , freekin stinks and something should be done about it.
Ive had too many ppl Ive known over my journey top themselves "cause they couldnt get what was their right.
I'm fuming Jas but listen to your mouth piece and proceed with caution.

Hoping something positive comes pit of it but at this stage, which ever way we proceed, I still won't have a job to go back to.

I wonder if Tandy Leather would let me buy a franchise off them and open a store here in Perth? That would be a kick in the butt for the thieving bastard rip off stores over here lolol

All the best mate with whatever life brings you. I'll just say to you, speaking from experience. Don't get sucked into buying a franchise. The only winner out of the franchise is the Franchisor. Very recently been there and thankfully done that.

just found out my suspicions were true
had my heater core replaced by a local trying to support the little guy
after 1st attempt from a mechanic they hired to do the job my pride and joy would not even get over the speed hump in the workshop
the young fella said to me hey good luck with that ey
had to send my truck to United fuel to sort out what the problem was
yeh mate we can dyno for $160 bucks the bill to pick up was $600 boost sensor stuffed and dyno
so went back to the guys that did the job and they had redo heater core as still was not right and found little pieces of my dash falling out while driving, i advised I think your mechanic did a dodgy and swapped my intercooler
they gave me back $300 bucks for the United bill but would not admit it
so after a couple of months to save up for new intercooler find out my diffuser in the feed pipe missing and all the rubber pressed mounts had been cut to remove and intercooler full of oil
my suspicion's were true
mechanic has done a runner and wont return any calls funny that
maaan am I pissed and that's just me, wife wants to take them to court and my mates want to find the mech and sort him out
thanks for my rant on wants has made you angry today

Pissed off at SPER and main roads. I got a speeding ticket, to the tune of $1000, along with a failure to provide license, another $300. so I put it on a payment plan. I went in, thought I sorted it all, but I got home, and they have sent me the letters, got the one detailing payment plan for the first fine, all good. Open the next letter for the second fine, and they have put the first one on top of it again! Trying to make me pay my ticket twice! Now I gotta go back down to
Main roads and sort it all out again. It's a long ride on the push bike!

Well keep in mind I am green at this 4wd thing but learning every day. So I put my Patrol in to have the EGR plate installed, install Dawes needle valve, catch can and ARB diff breathers. I pick up the Patrol and the check engine light comes on within the first 5kms. I take it back and after they go over it they decide to remove the plate because they can't clear the light.

When I get home I realise they didn't show me any of the work they had done so I lift the bonnet to see what's changed. There is a shinny round thing trapped between some hoses that seem to be holding it in place. I'm guessing that is the Dawes needle valve, not what I was expecting but.....

Anyway after searching for a couple of minutes I find one hose with a filter type thing on the end. I'm guessing this is the diff breather kit. The catch can is pretty easy to find and it looks pretty good it has a tube running from top two bottom to display the level of the oil inside.

I take the Patrol on the freeway and I notice the boost is now sitting around 20psi. So I pull over and find the hose has blown off the shinny round thing, I connect it up again and all is good. So this is indeed the Dawes needle valve. No knob inside the vehicle, only under the bonnet so I'm once again guessing that the needle valve is an automatic one. It does work pretty good, turbo spool up is a lot faster and the engine just seems to be rung a lot smoother.

Anyway this gets me thinking, hey I asked for an ARB diff breather kit, there's only one breather I can find under the bonnet. After I read the reciept it says that they installed a custom diff breather kit. I specifically asked for the ARB kit. If there is only one breather could they all be feeding into the one hose from somewhere deeper inside the engine bay? Or do you think they just hooked up the 2 diffs?

This all makes me a tad angry, I didn't know to ask for a manual Dawes needle valve and they didn't ask me. They just installed it. I did ask for the ARB diff breather extension kit and they installed a custom job and in the end they just took my dollars and explained nothing. I suppose looking back I should have asked them to run me over what they had done but at the time it didn't seem necessary.

I do t think I'll be going back there any time soon.

Mate you need to take that back to them. It doesn't really matter what the job was, you have not been given what you asked for. If you asked for 4 breathers you should have got 4 breathers. If you requested an ARB anything you should have got it. Also the fact that hoses were falling off valves and things indicates very poor workmanship. The story about the EGR plate is astounding. I figure you asked for it to be installed in the engine, not in the glovebox because it made the engine light come on. If I employ someone to do somthing I expect them to do it. Mate, I have my own mechanical business, all be it not automotive, and if I don't do what my client asks for he doesn't pay me. End of story. Example if I am asked to install a XYZ box I have two options, either do it and tune the machine to suit, or say I'm sorry sir, I can't fit that mod to that machine. i can't take his cash and then say I couldn't make it work with an XYZ so I took it out.

Follow the diff breather hose back they may have a "t" piece down in the bay that goes to front and back
