Buckle up — cancel culture has officially come for emoji.

Gen Z declared that the thumbs-up emoji has a “rude” meaning and should not be used in any conversation.

After one user posted on Reddit that they’re “not adult enough to be comfortable with the thumbs-up emoji reaction”, several young people chimed in to cancel other common emoji — and revealed why they should never be used.

The thumbs-up emoji gives off a passive-aggressive and even confrontational air, according to Gen Zers, who were born between 1997 and 2019. Several even claimed that they felt attacked whenever it’s used.

One 24-year-old attempted to sum up the argument by saying the thumbs-up emoji is “hostile” and is “definitely a not nice thing”.

“For younger people (I’m 24 for reference) the thumbs-up emoji is used to be really passive-aggressive,” they wrote. “It’s super rude if someone just sends you a thumbs up. So I also had a weird time adjusting because my workplace is the same.”

The anonymous office worker chalked it up to a “generational communication culture difference.”

“Everyone my age in the office doesn’t do it, but the Gen X people always do it,” they wrote. “Took me a bit to adjust and get out of my head that it means they’re mad at me.”

The poster explained a thumbs-up “is usually a response if the other person is being rude or annoying or stupid.”

Several Reddit users agreed with the decision to cancel the emoji, saying that using it in a work environment makes the team members “unaccommodating” and seem “unfriendly.”

“I understand what you mean, my last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send info to each other on and most of the people on there just replied with a [thumbs-up emoji],” one commenter said.

“I don’t know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me, like an acknowledgment but kind of saying ‘I don’t really care/am not interested’? Don’t know if that’s the way you feel but I got used to it in time and I’m just as bad for sending a thumbs up now.”

“It’s not that odd to see it as passive-aggressive,” another chimed in. “Just imagine how would it feel to go into your boss’ room, say something, and then see him turn to you, look you in the eye, and [give a thumbs-up].”

Other generations seemed confused by emoji etiquette. “So it’s like a sarcastic thing? Man I’m getting old lol,” one wrote. “What the kids do, is not what everyone else adopts. It’s not passive-aggressive at all that I’ve seen, it seems to be a younger generational thing,” added another.”

Business consultant Sue Ellson told the Daily Mail that it could take time for the older generation to fall in line.

She explained that words are always better than symbols in a professional environment, and the LinkedIn expert can see how people would become disillusioned with just an icon.

“Predictive systems can type a word like ‘Thanks’ in two clicks after a while,” said Ellson. “It feels like people are ‘too lazy’ to type a written response and it doesn’t provide clarity as to next steps.”

“Do you mean: ‘Yes, I will do something,’ ‘OK, I agree,’ or is it just confirmation that you received the message?” she added.

On Reddit, some were less offended by the thumbs-up emoji but felt the heart symbol was actually the most inappropriate.

“To me, the heart is reserved for friends and family, and has a more intimate meaning of love, while thumbs up is just simple agreeing,” commented one person. “I actually find a heart emoji weird for work messages. I use heart emojis for things like when someone says ‘I got a new kitten,’ or ‘Susie did a really great job,’” added another.

But the heart may, too, be falling out of fashion. A survey of 2,000 people conducted by Perspectus Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old” if you use thumbs-up or heart emoji.

The official list of “cancelled” emoji includes: Thumbs-up, Red Heart, “OK” hand, Checkmark (or the Tick), Poo, Loud crying face, Monkey covering eyes, Clapping hands, Lipstick kiss mark, Grimacing face.

But one Reddit user, who classifies herself as part of an older generation, defended her emoji use, saying that she likes using the thumbs-up emoji “because it means many things.”

“It means ‘I approve’ or ‘I understood and will obey’ or ‘I agree,’” she wrote.

“If anything, my only objection would be that some days it might be hard to tell which one it means,” she offered. “But it is generally pretty clear.”

“It’s just a way to say ‘i’ve read your message and have nothing add and I hope and pray to all the god all the bazillion people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too,’” defended another user.

Several studies regarding emoji have been conducted, including one that suggested that including emoji in work emails actually makes you seem less powerful in your career.

Another study suggested that using the infamous eggplant emoji is actually a major turn-off when it comes to dating.

If you made it this far Sprocky, well done. Please don't kick the cat! :D

This probably should go in another thread ........... but it did make me very happy today.

A naked birder story.

They have been teasing me incessantly, morning & evening, every day for months. Yellow-billed Kingfishers loudly trilling away , often at very close quarters, but I think they must be able to throw their voices because despite being so loud & prolific they remain hidden. They are notoriously difficult to see, & harder to photograph because when they are seen it is usually deep in the shadows of trees. They are Cape York specials - only live up here (& in Papua New Guinea).

It had reached the point where I no longer bothered to go hunting for the source of the call, having resigned myself to never finding one, I have looked so often.

Laying in bed this morning I heard the usual YBK call & thought little of it. MrsTea calls from the outside Kitchen area "Yellow -billed Kingfisher, Yellow billed Kingfisher".

"Can you see it?" I yelled back, thinking she had just become enthused by another call at close proximity, the comfort of the bed seemed a better option.

"YES" came her response.

"Don't take your eyes off it" I screamed back as I instantly flung myself out of bed, grabbed the pelican case & rapidly assembled the 600mm lens onto the camera. Heart beating rapidly & self talk telling me it'd be gone by the time I got there. Today however was the day I got lucky.

MrsTea sat at the breakfast table, binoculars glued to her face pointing to a popular perching spot for a variety of birds , a tall dead tree 30 metres away , high above the jungle greenery. Without binoculars all I could make out was the shape of a small dark bird in the morning light but was even then sceptical, never having seen a Kingfisher of any description perched at such a height.

"Are you sure" I asked. "Yes, yes, certain" she replied excitedly. No time to find my binoculars, rapidly fiddling with camera settings I finally looked through the lens & there indeed was a Yellow-billed Kingfisher. A bastard bird if ever there was one, but this one had obviously not read the the Yellow-billed Kingfisher 'How to be a bastard' rule book, as it remained compliantly on it's perch for long enough for me to get several shots.

Not the world's best YBK photos but I got them & they're mine! Thanks goes to my lovely wife, (who knew I'd appear wearing nothing but a camera but still called me anyway) the YBK jinx has been broken. (Next the Black-eared Catbird which teases similarly, but with less frequency than the YBK).

1st pic - as shot
2nd pic cropped & a fake sky added.

Nice mate. Congrats! Who's the company?Cogar mate. They are a civil, traffic management and directional drilling company. I've been slotted in to the directional drilling crew and should be operating this pretty soon. Pretty crazy some of the equipment they use, it's very cool. I'd say at some point I'll be doing my HC ticket and a few others to drive their rigid trucks towing machines such as that digger. The trailer weight puts them to the next level for license. Also will be using excavators from time to time.86170

Not today I had to attend my best mates mums funeral. But over the weekend.
Got a tip off from ol’mate Nic about some excess timber that’s available to be cut and split for firewood. Last weekend was our last weekend officially for firewood collection until it reopens next autumn, so this saved us having to go searching for it.
I think I have a good backup now. 6metres wide by 1.8 high and double row.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/11/75.jpg

Then this same bloke offers me a choice of timber for me to make some floating shelves for my kitchen. We chose, I get it home and started to work on it.

One obvious broken line, one small hairline crack in another piece of the line and finally the compressor was also leaking.

Expensive cold air now lol

Absolutely stunning coastline from the start of the GOR and right through to SA, but I honestly cannot say I have been down that way and it wasn't cold and/ or blowing a gale.

Choices: Traffic jams and such or waking up at 5.40 am have brekky, then to walk and catch a train at 6.30 to the city, another train to the west, another 15 min walk to work. 8 hour day, and do the reverse in the evening. Or when I first moved here in the 90s: Wake up at seven, brekky, 15min drive to town start at 7.30 work 8 hours, go surfing, fishing or snorkelling for a couple of hours and head home, hopefully with tea in the catch bag. I have a cunning plan: When elected I will pass new laws that state: You must sit on 80 kph on country roads then you must speed through country towns and roadworks. You must speed up so no one can pass you when it is safe for them to do so. You must speed up to 100 kph when there is a passing lane.
That way F%$sticks will do the opposite.

You got a sharp eye...
An FME/BNC connector at the antenna base would solve that...

I'd be more worried about interference from winch/spotty electrics... especially if you were out with a radio trying to comms a pull...

Easy peasy, simply install a warmish h/m winch with 15mm ish say of additional spacing backwards off your GQ and or GU bullbars for added line usability.
Guaranteed your penetrated grill will be custom fitted/slotted to stealthily accept a baby wire as such for full and easy removal if needed [emoji23]

It is a common practice here to leave a note or a business card handwritten "interested in selling?" and the person's phone number on the windshield/wipers of cars that someone is interested. So the sticker is a joke, calling the person's attention that this car has found its last owner.

I wont tell OSH you were using a scissor lift like that :P

Interesting way of doing it, but... When I was doing steel sheds we'd do it more "amish"...make the portal/span frames on the ground, then stand them up, square and brace the whole thing then bolt it down.

Looks a good size... you'll get a couple safaris in there :D

But there was one on standby. lol

Interesting, U say:
make the portal/span frames on the ground, then stand them up, square and brace the whole thing then bolt it down.,

the shed supplier recommended a similar method, but bolt to bottom footing brkt as anchor, bolt and lift using this lowest bolt as the hinge point, lift then brace and secure (3 purlin bolts thru each footing brkt to columns).

More "amish" _ I wanted to lash a snatch block to a select tree behind and winch up same, but their builder on site did not want to play...

Good size for my needs, 16x9m (5m high walls) _ 5T/2 poster going in. Coming together, walls are now sheeted, roller doors tomorrow then roof cover Monday (depends on windage).

That shit is so hard to split, 10 times harder than red gum.

You just can’t go cheap with our Aussie timber when getting a splitter though.

I want to mount the splitter to the drawbar of my trailer as I cut and split the timber on site. Too much wasted trailer space cutting the rounds and loading them in and splitting when I get home. Sometimes the rounds are just too fargin' heavy to lift onto the trailer as well.

Will you find a splitter with that much tonnage to fit in a drawbar..

My new oscilloscope has arrived. Its a Uni-T 2052CL. I sourced it locally and intend power it with my new pure sine wave inverter to use it anywhere. The scope has got more features than I can poke a stick at. It has a 63 page destruction manual. I'm 15 pages in and have already forgot what the first features were. :)

Still fiddling with tachos and speedometers, sig gens and such. But I've forgotten most of what I was taught, so trying to get back in the swing of things. I got sick of the crap Allosun handheld scopemeter as it was like using a pitchfork to eat spaghetti. The price isn't too bad now, as it is all cheap digital screens and stuff.

The bloke at Icon (Jaycar), also still uses an old CRO too. I saw an awful lot of them on Ebay and elsewhere when I was researching units.
As for scopemeters, check out the prices for reconditioned Fluke meters. Bloody ridiculous.

The best features I found on this new scope is the Auto button and a reset default. If you stuff up one of the many settings or need to move on quickly to signals with vastly different parameters it only takes a second to get going.

Good for you Mark, I am a regular, have been for many years ( just hit 65 donations). I have found out though that I need to swap arms for the donation as I typically go the left arm because right handed and I can then ignore the instructions about doing any heavy work with the affected arm! Anyway, was working on the truck and grunting away on the end of a spanner with arm at full extension and right where the typical needle sites are, bloody hell did it hurt. So the hard earned advice I can give you is to swap the donor arm for each subsequent donation.

I don’t even know my blood type. Never bothered to ask before. I guess they’ll tell me on my next visit. My reason for giving plasma is at the clinic they had a board up with what’s in the most need. For blood there was only one blood type listed. For plasma, every blood type.

It was a good feeling to be honest walking out of there today, I should have been doing this 30 years ago… better late than never I guess.

So I’ve had to take a few days off from work due to back issues.

A couple things I've found (sciatica, motorbike and snowboard crashes, general youthful exuberance) I've done everything from chiropractic to chinese/thai/sports/physio massage to accupuncture

Best value for money, these: https://fireactiv.com/ compression/heat belts.
Inversion table and daily tai-chi/stretches.

I also switched from a sprung mattress to a foam one, and some people do better sleeping in a chair.

Mostly just have to find what aggravates it and cut that out. Driving, and carting sheet materials (plywood, plasterboard etc) are bad for me.
Absolute pain in the ass, and quite debilitating so I hope you find something that helps!

Unfortunately my back issues will never go away, I cannot remember the last time I had zero pain in my back, the level of pain just varies from day to day, and sometimes it just gets too much and I’m forced to take heavy meds to calm things down. I was born with spinal bifida, only in two vertebrae thankfully, so this and a few crushed disc’s ain’t fun sometimes.

All good though, just annoying more than anything as while I sit here and type I know I have a heap of things that need to be done around the house and I can’t because of the issues.
I have an inversion table, doesn’t help me much though.
Exercise is the key, I know I need to get back into that as this helps the most more than the drugs.

This made huge difference for me. One would think that the more comfortable sprung mattress would be better but it happens the other way around, as it is soft and your back muscles have to compensate for stabilizing your spine, so you wake up with your back muscles "tired from "working all night". A heavy density foam one don't allow much movement so once you get comfortable you back muscles can let go and rest.

I have an acute scoliosis and I can vouch for the exercise comment. I am doing specific exercises to build up spine supporting muscles over the last 3 years and it makes a hell lot of difference. Being this a condition I have since my teenage years and having attempted every sort of treatment and/or reconditioning I can tell you the very best I have had to date is swimming. You build up chest and lumbar muscles with relative easy while not risking any impact to your spine, as underwater impacts are dampened. I only have changed swimming for gym guided exercises due to not having access to a gym with a pool where I am now.

What is that muffler-like bridge from turbo to intake manifold? Some sort of water-cooler?

Talking about Tas Adventure, was watching some YT the other day and recognized one place you and MudRunner were, where his GQ was "too close" to rolling. A waterfall close to the ocean. It was nice to recognize that from pictures I've seen here.
