That's been a Facebook "life hack" for years!
Go and spend 80 bucks on a pair of reef thongs. A pair lasts me 3 or 4 years and as comfy as a pair of good sneakers.
Plus there's a wanky bottle opener on the bottom.

Plasnart I've got 3 pairs. One for bitumen, one for gravel, and for special occasions - one for sand. lol.
They make really good 'footprints' in the sand - no need to let any air out. lol

I helped a guy whilst in the mines, do a site clean up of the old conveyor belt yard. reckon he took about 5klm of belt away on the back of 2 B triples. They were destined for packing into containers and shipping to india where they are unrolled and stamped out for use as thongs for the locals, massive market for used conveyor belt. had me wondering though as this stuff was indirect contact with Sulphuric acid, plus some was up to 2" thick!!

On the way over for 10 days in the flinders Ranges in SA. Pulled into Peterborough at 5:30pm to use the public toilet in the main st and noticed my Engel fridge was showing 14degrees. Turns out my lead was knackered. Damn it!!!! WTF am I gonna do without a fridge for 10 days.
I was parked behind another camper and he walked passed and asked if things where ok. I told him my lead was knackered. Asked him if he had a spare but no joy.
He remarked that the Jaycar across the road might have something!! Bullshit!! There was a Jaycar sub branch in the newsagent across the road directly and they where open until 6pm. What are the chances.
In I go. Hanging on a hook 20m from my car was a brand new Engel lead. $20!!!
About bloody time some good karma came back my way.
Happy New Year guys.

Received a favourable result for a dispute claim against a software/computer support scammer today thru PayPal.
Just prior tp Xmas, part way thru downloading MS office onto a new PC, a "MS"prop-up appeared advising us to seek MS assistance by ringing this 1800 #. We were sucked in by these guys showing us details of many hacker that had accessed our "new" PC and offered a contract for life time computer support, peripherals and S/W upgrades. As events unfolded over the next 24hrs we were concerned that we had been scammed. Not happy thinking that we had been taken for a ride, contacted MS direct and they advise us that the phone no was a known scammer (along with many others to them) and we then subsequently logged a dispute claim against the seller "scammer" thru PayPal.
Today, we learnt that we had been successful with our claim and received our money back $541.00 AUD. How good is that!!!

Interested, what is your eng build/mod and approx eng load/boost/rpm (say 3/4 up the hill, not when in wipe mode with indicator)?

It's a TD42TI in a GQ wagon with Borgwarner 6758 turbo running 3" pipe to front mount wrx intercooler, 3" straight through exhaust, 4" snorkel, also running 35" tyres.
I was only sitting in 3rd the whole way up roughly 2500RPM and it was about 12-13psi the whole hill. I think my tune is around 22 psi from memory.
Actually I did drop it down to 2nd at 3000RPM around a switch back. The hill has 2 to 3 big sweeping corners, long steel hill climbing from valley to the hills.

It's a good set up now thanks mate, I forgot to mention a well built 12mm pump too.
I couldn't believe how well it towed to be honest. Back when I had the standard 10mm pump running the HT18 towing the old 750kg 80's pop top camper felt the same as towing the near on 2T caravan.
Torque is mid range at 700NM I think down low at 2100 RPM which is a huge winner for me!

Mine, GU CRD max boost 21-22 psi & remapped ECU, NADS manual boost 3" pipe, snorkel, stock turbo. Must say my interest is growing towards turbo upgrade down the track. Bought the veh new 08, shame Nissan stopped using 6 cyl diesel (could have put as bit more effort into R&D to meet pollution requirements).
Must say, am partial towards low rev/high torque engines. In the early 80s, had a 76 swb Landcruiser and replaced the 2F petrol engine with an old 4 cyl B diesel (24 volt start). Used a series parallel switch, chg on 12v and 24v start. Eng was originally used for an irrigation pump installation. It was a low rev/high torque eng (non turbo of course) but made the SWB into a great workhorse. Certainly not equal to your build but it was good plugging along, a lot of the mountain track were open for access back then.

I had a 2F petrol and from factory it was one of the more torquey petrol engines floating around that's for sure.

Mark, I think you might be just a 'little bit' ahead of yourself with these claims! Its going to cool the oil, not superturboretrorocket fire that engine - its still going to be a torquey slug, and you'll continue to love it for that. Have a few more wheat beers and post a bit later!!!!!

Hi Softy
Karma says "Don't build fences, build bridges"
Roosevelt said "Speak softly and carry a big stick"
Arnaud Almaric said, loosely translated "Kill them all, let God sort it out"
I usually let the voices in my head advise me which philosophy to adopt on a case by case basis.
Life experience has easily proven that Almaric had the best default position tho plus I feel much better afterwards

Installed the brown davis 78L belly tank today, after @AM MB kindly tried without success last weekend. Glad we did the trial run though as second time around, with one person, wasn't easy but a few tricks remembered. For those doing this on a GQ, you must grind off the bolt projecting thru the floor that hits the centre of the tank, plus take 5mm off one of the drivers seat anchor bolts as this hits the tank also. The two small diameter brake lines on the drivers side near the rear diff need to be bent upwards about 50mm - all achievable if you are careful. If you dont do this the tank will not go in. Lastly, the centre rear tank mount is directly above the driveshaft. If you don't want to remove it, make sure you have a couple of long drill bits, circa 300mm or 250mm would be best so you clear the diff housing and the exhaust - 3" exhaust is a pain! My tank was a gift, and from an early petrol model. It had the petrol expansion tank. This was removed to provide more clearance as its not required on a diesel. You need to weld up the expansion tank vent hole - 6mm, easy done. Twin fillers in place and hoses connected except the tank fill hose which is going to be a nightmare - waiting on rubber 90 deg bends to arrive then going to find a route that works from filler to tank - standard pipes are simply too tight to fit, although you can bet that BD would simply walk up and throw them in! Lastly, I ground 6mm off the rear control arm bracket to provide greater clearance for the tank, its like a bum in a bucket fit, 10mm off tailshaft clearance. Job took 5 hours in the driveway, and 8 beers - full strength AB.

Bought another boat with my son to go "fish feeding" again. It's a Quintrex 4.74mtr in very good condition, over-powered by a 85hp Suzuki. Picking it up today. Should go like shite off a shovel, as my last 4.75mtr went well with a 70hp, so the 85hp should move it along.

Good Torque Low Down. Tried out a new design (prototype) muffler from Berklee yesturday.
With my CRD / ecu remap / manual boost control and using Berklee 3" SS H/Flow Xhaust, was not happy with low down torque (excessive back pressure was my concern). Got Berklee to make up new muffler, providing 50% greater flow than their current build..
Sooo Happy happy!
IMO
Good result Max boost 21psi @ 1800rpm.
Max torque 374N-m from 2000rpm and developing near constant torque level up thru rev range. (Readings from Ultragauge EM Plus "Ref only" and presume @ flywheel).
At solid load the low down torque "holding on", confidently pulls out from 1500rpm @ 10psi, boost / torque then steadily rising and at 2000 rpm back in the seat.
Very happy. even better than compared to using muffler delete pipe, but do miss the turbo whistle but performance in the seat is what counts.

Starting to shop for a Patrol with a Duramax to see what's out there not many around at the moment which I hope is a good thing , instead of a conversion in our GU might just buy one already done .
Anyone have any info on Vic American imports or am I on my own with this one .

31st January 2018, 09:22 PM
Its a tough subject. A conversion if done correctly should be 50k plus to do it right. I have driven duramax powered patrols and it is cool but that allison trans behind it is so good. I have seen a 40k conversion that was woeful unfinished really. Pipes not secure, wiring was crap and just splayed everywhere. If you do buy one already done go through with a fine tooth comb or get someone to have a real hard look for you.
I honestly would just spend the money and get a duramax in a factory fitment yank tank

Thanks mate , I have read a bit about them and just love the idea of keeping the Patrol but will need to tow a big heavy van and don't want to pay $60 odd grand for a wheezing four potter , I can go to $68k then sell the GU for $12ish k plus the GQ should get similar price being the rare factory auto .
We've finally decided to flip the rental and get the van and tug but best part is the missus is letting me get the Duramax , will have to keep Tug below $70k and not a fan of the big yank tanks just their motors .
Will stick with a certified job but just doesn't seem to be many doing the conversion .
