Its funny how these tests work. Guy I work with left site a day early due to feeling poorly, even though he tested neg on a RAT, tested again that night, neg, went to bed, wife who is a pharmacist made him do another at the end of the second day, and he is positive. The entire Capital Projects office on site got tested again today and 4 of them went positive out of 5 - only one who wasnt tested is unvax'd, yet was there and took the chocolate out of the box that was handed around by the infected person - go figure?

Due to good ol' Fed Govt cuts, the SBS couldn't afford the show, along with others, any longer, so they took it on the road.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but SBS is about the only channel worth watching IMO and the Govt are killing it off.

IMHO, drawers are amazing for work, singles and couples touring also up to a week tops off grid.
Not trying to be harsh it’s just the honest reality of Mr Nissan’s woeful GVM allowances on GQ & GU’s I only know.
An added 80kg of steel in the back to house merely what two say 40-50L plastic tubs can do truly does hinder a family of 4 trying as best as possible to remain road legal over a 1-2 week period with fuel/water/food/spares and of course extra slabs/cartons still capable [emoji23][emoji106][emoji106]

Some people don't like having draws. I must admit that I too sometimes think of losing them, but when you can pack all this and still have another draw. I'm happy with that..http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/04/164.jpg

I like the little partition you have in the drawer. Might have to steal that idea.

Mark, do you remember the big timber setup I scored off you few years ago? Was my first set of draws/fridge cage so to speak and needed a rear spring upgrade after it

Horses for courses with draws. Travelling a lot and a GVM kit, it makes sense. I had them and never again in the GU. 70kg+(Kings) of permanent weight, to carry and sort out 20kg or so worth of gear/food for me. For just a daily driver and a weekender trip every now and then, the maths doesn't add up.
With the GU (unless you've got the upgrade). Set of draws, full tank and passenger and you're tickling the upper GVM threshold as it is. Not even taking account everything else like bars, winch etc...
I now sort my stuff out in those expedition tubs. When not travelling they're in the garage, ready to load up whenever at moments notice. And got the whole space in the rear to use for whatever when not going away.

Set of Drawers is no heavier than the average passenger. You have an allowance for 6 passengers plus the driver at 80kgs each, but not a whole lot left after that. Each to their own I guess. My Patrol is a weekender, I don't require the empty space in the back. Drawers suit my needs. :)

I got my welding bench on wheels! It's been a bloody heavy thorn in my side for ages, now it's a breeze to move. Did a bit more tidying up, need more materials for new benches.
Note: Nothing is in its resting place, I'm just moving stuff to make room for stuff at the moment. The welding bench will end up full of the stuff on the shelves soon so I can dismantle and rebuild to suit the new space. Still it's the small victories at the moment!852738527485275

Then they take out a canary coloured stick and proceed to beat the dollars out of everyone like a money pinata .
In recent years a popular trick up their sleeves are mobile weigh pads.

They have been doing this, and a lot more, to trucks for years. Just compare the number of times caravans are pulled over compared to heavy vehicles. I see this move as long overdue and obviously needed when you look at the number of caravans losing control. There are a lot out there, some with with huge rigs, little or no towing knowledge or experience, and now idea on what the various weight limits are even if they know that such limits exist. These rules and limits exist for a reason.

Back from a test trip to Grampians/ Gariwerd with our old, but new-to-us pop top. We had an ensuite site, which was very handy. The van is so much easier than towing our old camper and having to muck around with tents and barbeques. We haven't used the annex yet, so fitting a roll out awning might be the go.

Our car had begun making a constant howling/squealing noise from the wheels. Driving in it alone I thought it was from the front passenger side & it seemed to be getting worse. I convinced myself that shot wheel bearings were a high probability, but didn't use the car for several days whilst we had visitors here with us. (Instead doing the 'Cuppa speciality' of worrying about it, until the visitors departed).

Yesterday, after jacking up the front & finding no play & no noise in the front wheels when turning them by hand I thought it would be prudent to take the car for another drive before diving into the front bearings. I have spare bearings & seals with me, which I've carried for the past 5 years, but the lack of workshop facilities & a bad back had me dreading the job.

The mechanical workshop in the nearby community was the only option other than doing it myself, & doesn't have a great reputation for quality work, & charges $120 per hour to boot.

Took MrsTea out for a drive. With her head out the window she was certain that the noise was coming not from the front passenger side wheel, but from the rear passenger side wheel. A glimmer of hope flickered in my mind - the chance that it wasn't bearing related at all, but rather the possibility that it might be debris, picked up in one of our many water crossings recently, inside the drum.

Getting up & down from under the car was a nightmare with my back, but 18 hours laying down since, with a couple of painkillers has helped, & this morning I can at least move around without fear again.

The two of us worked together. Backing off the brake shoe adjuster (which way?) from underneath the car proved a bridge too far. Just couldn't do it, so took the wheel off & did the adjustment using a mirror, a torch, & a little wire hook I made to take the tension off the spring which stops the adjuster moving. Three hands required with torch mounted on my head. Laborious & difficult, but once we had worked out which way to turn the adjuster we got there.

Of course the drums which hadn't been off since 5 years ago back home in my workshop weren't going to play nicely. The threaded holes for bolts to aid removal were rusty & very tight. Light applications of WD40 & screw in a little, back off & repeat was the go until they loosened up & I no longer feared the possibility of snapping the bolts off in the holes with too much pressure on them from my socket wrench.

Of course one bolt worked better than the other - I could see the drum coming off, but still very tight even though the shoes had been backed right off, until the the loud 'crack!' that I wanted to hear. My wife looked very concerned, but I assured her the noise was positive, & sure enough a few moments later off came the drum.

And yep there was a small handful of what I imagine was Pascoe River debris inside the drum, no rocks , nor any significant scoring of the drums or damage to the shoes though.

A good clean & all put back together with the re-adjusting achieved similarly once again with the wheel put on/taken off multiple times to help check adjustment.

Test drive found noise was now completely absent & car pulls up alright when braking.

That's what has made me happy (& the fact that I didn't have to change the front wheel bearings (Which are now almost 100,000kms old, last repacked about 6000kms ago & re-adjusted about 2,500kms ago).

Last load of wood before the collection season closes. Pity I can’t go back as we came across this fallen gigantor pretty much at the end of our day. This tree was astronomically huge. Pictures seriously don’t do the size of this tree justice.
I parked the Patrol next to it just just try and get how big this tree was.

Awesome mate.

I have a Joel's Garage Gear 4.5T clear floor 2 Post Hoist. I like the clear floor as I'm not tripping over the base. You need 3.6m clearance to top of post.

They also do 4 posters and 5T Clear Floors. Jump on his website. Everything you need to know is there. Note you nčd to build in a 200mm x 4.5m x 2m pad into the concrete to copw with your hoist.

Note you will need to a few accessories when you go to a Hoist. Happy to share what i have added when you are ready to go mate. Allow mate an extra $600 to $1000 for extras cause you really will need at least some of it.

Thanks Darren for info. Checked out the Joel's site. The 4.5T / 2 post clear floor is what I am looking at (attached Proworkshop Gear _ Jackaroo 4.5T / 2 post and looks similar) but your hoist has the manual locks on both sides. You have used the Joel's 4.5T / 2 post that must suit your need and that gives me a bit more confidence of suitability.

INFO:
https://proworkshopgear.com.au/product/2-post-hoist-4-5-t-clear-floor-jt4-5cf-m/#closemodal

The shed will be a few months away for delivery and size is 9x16m with 5m ht clearance and open floor plan. Will ensure the 200mm slab thickness for 2 post install.

The 240V / 20 amp requirement for Joel's is more than proworksgear 4.5T that require 240V / 15A _ I generate my own power 5kW continuous but can run the generator to help if needed but I can supply surge pwr so should manage the Joel's hoist. The 20A is most likely to start motor (P1).
The Joels has a bit more lift ht.

Any issue with patrol clearance to the hoist top spt frame?

Would be interested in the accessories that you bought and any further comment . Thanks mate

Last weekend I found my holy grail work boot, the Redback Bobcat. F* me they are the most comfortable work boot I've ever shoved my feet into, sh*tting all over my previous Blundstone, Steel Blue and Mongrel boots. I nearly wear these to bed! :D

They look fairly standard but feel anything but. No break-in needed, I wore mine out of the shop.

Picked up a new thermostat for the pulsar today and while I had the bonnet up I did a couple of checks..

Turns out while the car was getting a roady it also had a service done, air and oil filters and new oil. Checked one of the plugs and not bad, but I'll throw in a new set in..

I have never named any of my car's and I've gone through a few, but I think I'm going to call this the shopping trolley. It almost has on mark on every Panel.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/07/99.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2022/07/100.jpg

Wow, quite a different starting point from the GQ! Congratulations. I look forward to following what you do with this one [emoji16][emoji106]

Thanks mate!
This one will have to sit aside while I assemble my GQ, which should start in a few weeks. Initial plan was to put the silvertop TD42 from my donor GQ in it, but after being able to drive it for some 40Km before I was afraid to send some rods through the bonnet, the smoothness and silence of the TB45 got into me. I will drop the oil pan and take a peek inside to see the level of damage and quote parts and services to rebuilt it and compare it to the effort of dropping the TD42 in. Anyway, this will most likely be a 2023 project that I had to score now because these things don't come around when you are ready for them.

This is a picture from the exact spec that my GU is. And the picture source mentions it was taken in Haiti, the place I was told my unit was deployed.

Leaving for the Canning in about 3 weeks. Single vehicle, given the CSR 3 weeks to complete.

Been preparing for this for 40 years.

Still considering, 1 spare or 2? Space is a bit of an issue.

No one seems to get punctures anymore. Running a set of Kenda Klever R/T's for about 1 year. Did Arnhem land with them last year. Brilliant in sand. 10ply. Bit noisy on road. Can't fault them really.

Got a tyre repair kit and will be running a TPMS for the first time. Don't know?????

I would take just a tyre if you are confident/able to swap one over or carry a rubber vulcaniser patch kit and a tube would be my recommendation and what I have done successfully in the past.

G`day 10G.
Did the Canning a few years back towing a camper . that trip involved the Tanimi , the Bungles and numerous side tracks.
The canning was done in around three week and we found we could have spent another week out there. OK tyre wise.I just stayed with the standard spare both on the Patrol and camper, carried a good puncture repair kit including patches for the inside of the tyre, also a tube, OH and a good set of tyre levers. As for the trip there were some six vehicles ,two of us towing and no one had a puncture. We did have the odd breakage, one leaf spring on a trailer, this was repaired using two batteries in series to weld it together. That held together all the way back to Adelaide.
Punctures are not a problem its the corrugations, slowly slowly is the way to go.All so low tyre pressures 16 to 18 PSI.

Hope this is of some help. Bugga wouldn`t mind doing it again. So much to see.

Yep, that all sounds like the way I'm going to be tackling it, nice and slow. We're giving it 3 weeks to complete, which will include rest days and trips off to the side. As the track's been closed for 2 years, people are reporting that the corrugations have disappeared! I'm hoping they still have by the time we hit the track.

The job got done quickly by ‘Wossco’s Wecovery Services’ jamming a single front tough as nails GU tyre against a dirt mound to let some wicked Nissan steel and Runva 13k with Dyneema rope do their thing [emoji123][emoji123][emoji120][emoji120][emoji23]

High range and foot to the floor to clear the tread next time Marko!

You'd either:
(a) Come flying out like a fanging Fergie, or
(b) Dig through to Choina to shake hands with Xi Zingping.

Either way, would be a laugh! :D

Well 9/10ths fucked on getting the engine back in after pulling it out -again- to replace clutch fork (after replacing clutch ~2 months ago)

... to find out the issue was most likely the vacuum booster and an accupmaltion of wear through the system.

But at any rate, know it should be good for the next 30 years or so.

Tomorrows mission is basically fill the rad and bleed the clutch and drive on.
Then to remove engine from truck 3 to replace water pump, clutch (plates AND fork), swivel hubs rebuild, underbody bushes... yada yada. then #3 engine into #2 for a tiki-tour around the country for the next month.

Then Slap a turbo on #2 engine, into #1 ute
... swap #3 doors onto #2 but with the glass (tinted) and windywinders (manual) from #2...

Then sell them all and buy a late model landcruiser >_>

first week back onsite at work, 3rd week back at work after our Canning Stock Route trip.

Solo north - south traversal, no probs with anything. Took us 20 days. 100kms in a day was a big day. One day we only drove for 40 minutes, other days up to 7 hours, so it was all over the place.

Best trip we've ever done, want to do it again some time.

Tried to get into Rudall River NP from the south entrance. Nup. Corrugations so bad I could just see the GU copping some form of damage, these were just terrible corrugations, worse than anything i've ever seen.

Will be going back there one day, it was looking so pretty.

It's a HF radio set up for long range communications. I belong to a radio network called VKS737, and the aerial has HF radio telephone capabilities. I pay a yearly subscription to join the radio network and have chosen to pay a yearly subscription to have the HF radio telephone connected full time. I get 10 minutes of phone calls per month, included in the price.

I think so too. Shame there aren't more choices for tyres.
No rubbing, enough pinch on the rim to be a poor-man's-beadlock. I run the same equivalent size on 16" rims too (285/75?) which has more tyre options, but i love the gold facctory steelies :)

BrazilianY60
5th October 2022, 07:00 AM
I run that on 3 sizes of rim.

33x10.5 on 15 inch.
285/75r16.
285/70r17.

The 15 inch was a one time and only opportunity. For whatever reason they imported that size by mistake, sold the units they had and never imported them again. If you call their (BFG) customer service here they´ll say that size was never on the local portfolio.

Looks similar to the unit by Cabelas in the US, originally selling for circa $129USD, then their popularity went through the roof and you could not buy one for less than $399USD. Compact design, but based on the old banana lounge stretcher concept, biggish flat folded footprint, , flat lid wont shed water that well if its not tight and definitely a problem in the snow. I have a bivvy from cabelas made from the same materials as this style of enclosure and its definitely waterproof. The design allows you to open the thing right up for hot nights as well. Good score I reckon.
