Finally got to use my maxtrax this morning for the first time. Not happy about getting bogged, but very happy that they worked!

At Chile Creek, near Lombadina, Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome.... on the way to the beach.

Instructions from a local ... "stick to the track, use 2nd high & stay off the clutch & you'll be fine". Took a wrong track & wanted to turn around & there were tyre tracks where somebody had done the same thing. Moments later - not going anywhere in the soft sand. Digging plus use of maxtrax - 4 times got us back onto the track eventually. Later was told "that sand would have been fine at a different time of the day when it was not so hot", & then added "you also need 15psi all round" (we had 20).

When we were up at cape Leveque, in that area where you are, the sign on the beach said 'drop tyres to 15psi - yeah right, so I was at 25psi, go about 3 ft and started to dig in. A Ford F350 rumbles past me as I was de-airing and he has 13psi in his skinny tyres and romped it up the beach. After dropping to the suggested level, happy days - pays to take heed!

Plex has come a long way in the last couple of years and so far I'm happy with the performance. Disk I/O and network of course is a factor for a lot of home users especially with wifi but I run gigabit ethernet and ubiquiti Pro access point at home so I don't have any of those dramas. I also run off a headless linux box with no GUI so plenty of hooter to push it all out. I've heard emby is quite good though, if Plex ever gives me grief I might give it a try.

hey mate, im sure plex has come along way, last time i looked at it, it was a toss up between emby(at the time known as media browser), XBMC and Plex. media browser offered the most light weight option out of the lot. im not sold on emby, it has its downsides but im complacent which keeps me from looking for alternatives.

however, whenever i get the chance i plug media center master. honestly, has to be the BEST piece of software i have ever spent money on. bought a lifetime license for $50(he offers a $20 1 year license but for me it was a no brainer). completely written but a solo dude in the US, constantly coming out with updates and additional features. offers utorrent integration and full metadata support. if you currently rename your downloads manually, or want a program which will enable plex to deliver a more rich viewing experience, that program is the one for you. just a little plug but seriously worth it.

swathe
27th September 2018, 09:08 AM
...snip...

I have heard of that, admittedly I'm pretty slack with renaming files. I only really do it if Plex can't figure it out. I do have a folder with say the name of the show and then I do a sub folder for each season but I never really rename the episodes haha.

I haven't hooked up a TV aerial for years, I just stream my own stuff or Netflix.

rusty_nail
27th September 2018, 10:37 AM
Fair enough lol, that's another thing MCM does. it will auto download tv episodes as they are released, then re house them in the correct show/season folder. Does Plex source the synopsis cast list etc for you?

Yes it grabs all the cast and synopsis, cover art and so forth.

In the past I've generally used newgroups with sickbeard (http://sickbeard.com/) for TV episodes but of late have been doing it manually as I download a lot less than I used to, trying to watch less TV lol.

1090T has actually been my main rig since 2010. 8 years and still going strong. I had stability issues running 32 gigs, could never get it to work right. Tried different mobos and various ram stick combos... Currently running 12Gb with a few SSD's and a Strix 1060 gtx 6GB .
I've had a brand new 2700X Ryzen and mobo sitting here for a month just never had time to finish the build and update my 8 year old system. lol
Also scored a high end Vega 64 last week off a forum for absolute peanuts deal which was deemed faulty... I've had it pushed to limits in my side system for the whole week now and it hasn't faulted once. So i have at this stage i have a $1000 video card for under $100. I feel bad for the seller as i am confident his issue was the driver and/or other parts of the system.

nice mate! my current build is nearly exactly what you have on the shelf lol. im running a ryzen 7 1800x, MSI B350 gaming pro, with RX vega 64, just 16G ram, a 250Gb M.2. SSD, 250GB Sata SSD and 1.5TB Data. best of all, i picked most of it up for free. worked a show last year and the 'Tech' guy couldnt get the PC to work, he had 9 other builds to manage and just had enough and asked me to "piss it off to the nearest bin please". strangely the bin was located in my car lol. took it home and the ram was in the wrong Dim slot and was preventing the mobo from starting. so damm happy!

Yes. One of my threads got moved from public viewing ( to now financial members only). Not deleted although many posts were reported, moderated or removed.
It was just there for mindless low brow humor. People who hated it couldn't stop looking at it for some reason.

All forums go through stages. P4x4 used to be fairly savage, but in a shit way with lots of outright stains with mouths that write checks their fists can't cash. Alot of members came here because of that . I have noticed that some of the mods are bit 'enthusiastic' with their power at times lol.
This place went through a kind of ' Pissed around a campfire' feel, an overly PC whinger phase now it's just mellowed a bit really

Now that "looks like" is incomplete combustion(loaded up down low). so good.

Reminds me of when I was a kid (not so long ago) we had a bush sawmill (@ Tarago) and a traction steam engine was there. It was sold at the farm sale late 60's and this guy from Moe cleaned her and fired it up. Drove it out thru the bush to the road and loaded on truck. Had never seen it run before this, not as dramatic as the coal haul, but was amazed.

The long weekend rush is over so now packing to go up the mountains for fish. Trout season just opened.

Finished reinstalling JT I/C, painted frame, wrapping cold tank in sound deadening mat'l and capitalized on the brand name.
Moved boost reference for Tillix fwd (improved boost performance 20-25psi/less turbulence).

Look fwd to giving her a run.

Well. I had the final meeting tonight for this job. Just got told its mine if I want! Woo hoo! Managing a branch with some 14 staff will be stressful at time but I think its time I stepped up to the plate after 25 years of staying idle in my career. Im really looking forward to the new career move, not to mention the pay packet. About time!

Now to break the news to my current employers...

Mrs MB has thankfully passed all CT scans & Neuro tingles are finally easing after a couple of nights sleepover at the Austin via ER.

Huge THANKS to Uncle AB & Neighbours Wife for attending the lonesome paddock scene relayed whilst I was working some hopeless 250km highway north home bound Friday.

Massive THANKS also to our Country’s Amazing Ambulance service for their 30mins best humanly possible arrival call distance efforts and professional care throughout.

Funny side note, the pin that holds the gate in place in the middle wasn't long enough to go deep into the dirt, I'll get some concrete and make a bump for it eventually but for now there is 4x100mm 14g batten screws into the hard dirt in the driveway through some shitty ply to make it just tall enough lol. Hey bud looking awesome, i have to try and get over your side of town and come and check it out mate. Hope Teags and little Lacey are doing awesome.

Mate did you make the frame for the gate? or buy it? the timbers on the gate look like a decent size? 125x35 or something? The bad news is gate is going to sag mate, sorry bud. It really needs diagonal bracing from the hinge side bottom to the top. The gate looks Long though and a Diagonal brace is probably inadequate to be honest? maybe a double brace. see below.

76738

In the pic above i assume it is hinged from the left side. the solid yellow bracings are paramount. From the bottom they carry weight and will support the gate from the bottom hinge. given the width of the opening i'd be concerned about the top rail of the gate bending over time at that middle point to be honest and there may be an argument for the second bracing of the broken yellow line also. The broken yellow will be a tension brace and less important but may offer tension support to the outer section over time and limit the stress on that top rail.

If you wanted to try using Hoop Iron strap or something it would need to be Opposite and you would brace it using Hoop Iron to the broken yellow lines and the weight would be hung from the top hinge. Hope thats helpful mate.

Hope thats helpful mate.Hey bud, it's actually two Gates, with the seam hidden behind the centre post. The frame is made from steel and the support structure which the hinges on either side is braced to outer structures. At the moment it is solid. If it sags I will reinforce, but will wait for that to happen. I dressed the outer parts today and it looks much better. Nice and solid too.

No probs, yeah i could see that it was a welded frame. If that is 2 gates then the bracing should be from the borrom up the the middle from each side. Looks good mate. Look forward to checking it out.

Hume hwy a Patrol in front of me begins blowing tons of white smoke... Slowly coming to a halt to the side. I pull over to help as to me it smelt like a fire more than anything...
Family towing a camper on their way to QLD, just left home hours prior. Turns out their Patrol was running like shit on and off whole morning and they were borderline panicking. His poor wife had a gutful and was in tears. 2 kids on board.
ANyways they had their pre trip service and a few things replaced 3 days ago! He had the receipts in the books with them and I noticed one of the items replaced was the MAF sensor... Aha!!!
Walk over to the intake and lo' and behold the whole sensor assembly is hanging out by the wiring completely !!! Screws were not done up one may assume and eventually dropped out.

So sensor back in, we somehow done it up with a small screw driver as I didnt have any torx thingamajigs on me.
THey drove in front of me till Cragieburn pushing it hard and it drove like it should!! I just hope the sensor wasnt damaged while it was swinging around the engine bay and more so how much crap went into the intake and bypassed the air filter.

The bloke was just about crying in relief and thankfulness!
One famils holiday disaster averted... and off they go to Palms Cove. Half their luck!

ONe interesting thing though is the motor still ran and idled fine with sensor all the way out. Just no power and would not rev past 2000.
I thought that without the sensor the motor would not run at ALL. Hmmm .

Got home today to find an thank you present from above family... Cannot believe it.
They returned from their holiday and decided to say thanks in the form of a very nice Wild Turkey American honey gift pack and a ARB recovery kit and a very very nice thank you card. What an absolute kind gesture. Overwhelming folks...
Pay it forward people. It can return in heaps and bounds.

The PTO on the GQ runs off the gearbox, not the transfer case like the Toyota. I think Nissan deleted this functionality with the GU gearbox, so if you really wanted to do something it would be a gearbox change at best - not even sure about compatibility though. Also, its a crappy setup in my eyes as there is no speed change via ratio like the Toyota - you are limited to the speed of the engine. I have a PTO driving a hydraulic pump for the hydraulic winch. I am close to purchasing either a 3:1 or 4:1 inline planetary gearbox and running it in reverse to speed the pump up to gain some line speed - just need the time to sort this out after confirming it will fit - adds another 200mm to the drive chain with the additional box between PTO and the pump and needs all sorts of adapters and alignment plates - another nightmare garage job!

To be honest had not looked into doing PTO for the patrol as heard that GU did not have capability of PTO take off..The lack of ratios by using gearbox in stead of transfer would be very limiting to say the least. Had a hilux after FJ45 with a warn electric on it so swapped over. Must say, yeah PTO (just pullls)..my preference.

Security of having a winch is reassuring, but must say these days with a lot of the tracks/trails where I go have had access closed off and the need for using the winch now is very uncommon. But would not take it off as pretty easy to slip off track or even a need to pull a log out of the way. Most of my driving up the mnts is by myself so pretty cautious. Use it more at home pulling old pines out of the windbreak for firewood or grubbing things out.

Your project to fit up the hydraulic unit sounds huge.

The existing PTO hyd pump setup was big enough, especially doing the fit up on the garage floor under the truck, but now, its a case of trying to squeeze the additional length in between the cross member and the exhaust, then find room for the over pressure valve - will see if its even possible - might have to stay with the existing line speed at the end of the day.

Yeah am disappointed, even now, that I cannot drive thru and get to places I went, back thru the 80s. Now there is a gate on this track at Tantangara ck crossing, use to cross and go thru real lovely grasslands to reach the Bidgee where we use to stay in a hut. Too many people and some that just want to rip the place up and then we are locked out. Use to get a fright in these areas if an other vehicle was heard.

But do remain to enjoy and find quiet places and different experiences. These Brumbies just came up behind one day, as walking out from a fish, just to check what was going on.

Just rolled in the door from a solo daddy kids camping weekend, loved it!

Murrindindi Scenic Reserve was packed, couldn't believe how many people were there.

I never knew how bloody popular buying wood from servos or Bunnings was rather then people sourcing it from literally 20m away from their camp, crazy!!!

Over half the people camping there bought those big red gum bags.

First time visiting the Cascades too, I never knew how awesome that place was, crazy amount of water coming down the mountain!

Check out this teepee too lol

Will do mate, it was a last minute decision and I should've chucked it on forum!

No, I've never been to the falls, I was going to walk or but thought Lachy would struggle. I think he would've been ok though.

Yeah it's the same path as the cascades and going up those stairs to the car park Lachy was giving up and put his arms out for me to carry him.

You can do the Cascades up and back ten times and its still shorter than one way to Whilemena. Nice walk though.

Nice one John where from and dollar's

Hope you are well mate, pretty good this way. Been offline since last Thursday (network outage they say). Stuff me, when not there you need it....brrrrrrr.

Re: the airbox, came across this fellow (self employed boiler maker) thru FB(ZD Warriors) and he makes these air boxes for TD42 & ZDs for use with 9” K&N pod filter. Similar available for over $200 more.

From what I have seen, he does nice work and appears good quality. Cost $340 (without filter), so all up $465 (includes $100 for the 9” K&N pod filter and $25 postage). Does different duct sizes, mine 4" thru (inlet/outlet).

Started talking with him couple of week ago, he has made up one for CRD (30mm longer), being 330mm o/a box length, similar size to his TD42 box. Just need to cut a bit of the radiator shroud/cowl to clear.

Looking fwd and should arrive tomorrow and now waiting on 4" snorkel (fwd facing/ram hd) to arrive and then I will fit it up.

First family camping trip with the Patrol spending the weekend with friends at the Murray River near Ulupna island.
The patrol performed perfectly and towed the caravan we hired without a problem.
Got to put it into 4x4 for the first time and enjoy some of the hills and sand around the area too!http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/11/190.jpg

Our forum has been through hell and back over the years and we've watched a lot of other quality forums die with the likes of Facebook and their lack of cataloging and referencing for future knowledge along with the knowitalls but I'm proud we are still kicking it folks and it never ceases to amaze me in the last 12 month growth of quality members and old school members still around.

Can you guys explain how facebook 'works'. I finally joined so I could join a Chev optimiser group in WA, and ever since I get bombed by some robot suggesting I might like to make contact with 'this random person' whats the deal, how do I close down the assault and only use it for my needs?

This random person might be someone you you have contact on the phone you are using. Im not sure to be honest. I'm using FB less and less these days, I only have it now for the JD collectors pages Im a member of and thats pretty much it. The rest just shits me.

I am getting links to people overseas, not personal or business related, some clown and his family in Scotland, complete randoms, but its basically the same reason i opted out of LinkedIn as it was open slather with sales guys selling fire pumps and toothbrush sales etc totally BS. I just need to find a way to essentially 'go private' and restrict access to those who I have contacted - how do you do that or can you even do that?

You're on the WWW. No such thing as "private".
However...
FB has privacy options, that essentially make you kind of invisible.
But you can still join / view pages.
Friend requests you simply ignore.
If you post a comment on a public page or discussion, obviously, people will see you and if they want , look at your profile page and see the things you've allowed the "public" to see (whatever is enable in privacy options).
Pretty much what I do. I'm scott no friends!!! I just joined for the sake of various 4x4 pages and companies. For example right now communicating with Radius Fab, who are mainly only through FB.

The unfortunate thing about Facebook is quite a lot of clubs , Organisations and even businesses only have Facebook as a contact .
I get sick of the random people who you don't know wanting to get in touch etc so I just delete the request and only really use it now for my search for a subtank for the GQ but apart from that I don't use it much .

So Andy at Diesel Tec tuned my Patrol two weeks ago. I've had constant battles with coolant issues for a while now too. My latest attempt to help were to buy a new radiator. I ditched the 3 row copper brass jobbie and put the OEM style one back in to no avail. Flush and cleaned the cooling system with a cleaner, multiple different stats, modified bypasses on stats etc etc, more oil in the viscous hub, added foam around the a/c condenser and radiator, all to not much avail. The latest was I heard about Koyorad radiators. Supposed to be the duck guts in aftermarket OEM copies. Some have said better than OEM. So I took the plunge and bought one. I also added another 9ml of oil to the viscous hub.
Well I've been driving the Patrol to and from work over the last few days and the temps now change from 75c to 80c. And the odd occassion, hit 85c, for a few seconds then drop back quickly. I'm keen to get out on the highway now and see how it goes. From the driving I have done I would easily see 95c on the hills I have done. I will admit though, the extra oil in the hub I can really hear the fan pulling the air. This might be normal? But with a G35 fan, this pulls more air than the OEM fan so not really sure on this. But so far the temps are great!
And no bloody water leaks as yet from the water rail!
