Perhaps for us but not our children if the Australian short term profiteers have their way. :(

What I dont get and never have why do people spend thousands and thousands of dollars going overseas then come home and say jeez this place is nice it's great to be home. ! I've always preferred to travel around this great country and could not even see it all if I travelled full time. Ok so I'll miss a few castles but seriously we live in the best country in the world no matter how much we're badgered how shit our background is. Sheesh seriously this country has been built bloody well imo.

Very true mate, this was a work expo and client customer networking thing.

I would rather pitch a tent at Werribee sewerage farm then visit China for a holiday.

Because there is also so much to see abroad too..... I was lucky in the fact I was born here, spent half my life in the UK went to various places round Europe and due to my old mans work when I was younger got to see and live in places I probably will never get to see or go to again.

Now that my old man has passed away, me old girl is moving back to the UK, which in turn means opportunities to take the wife and kids for the odd visit..... Which I think is a good thing.
I haven't been back to the UK or anwhere abroad in the 15 years I've been here, love it here but I also think that if the opportunity arises to visit other places and cultures, then you should take it and go

+100000 to this !
People all around me going to Thailand, Bali, etc. I lost count of how many people I know, that went to the "incredible" USA, then returned disappointed & sour. What a waste of $ if you ask me. Each to their own I suppose... People want to see the world, well off you go.

Me, personally. I was born overseas, came here when i was 12. Haven't set foot off Aussie soil since, nor do I ever intend to. I mean that. Heck, my passports been out of date for 30 years. It can stay that way.
There is way too much of Australia to see. Beautiful, amazing in whatever corner you point at. Want beaches? Best beaches in the world right here. Want snow? Off you go to the High country or Blue mountains. Want desert? Well... Bloody hell, go to the magical Simpson. And then there is everything else in between!
People dream of touring the world, living it up in multi-star hotels and resorts. I dream of one day, hooking up a camper-trailer to my Patrol and going around this awesome continent we live on with my family.

As you know, MrsTea & I love travelling around Australia. It was the thought of doing this which brought us here 31 years ago. We want to keep doing it for as long as we can. I recall someone saying to us before we migrated here that Australia was an easier place to be poor in than most countries because you always have the bush to go camping in, & it’s true.

However it’s hard (for me) to understand how anyone can talk of Australia being the best place in the world (which it may well be) when they have never left it. It is impossible to judge anywhere from afar, as it can only be done on a secondhand basis. Everywhere has something to recommend it, often only found when actually there, not really any different to discovering different parts of Australia. How you travel determines what you find. We intend to spend next year exploring the Kimberley, but a friend has just returned from a fly in, 10 day hike, carrying everything on his back in wild kimberley which needed a chopper to get him in & then out again after 10 days. Who sees the most?

Personally I can’t think of anywhere else I would prefer to live but the idea of travelling in other countries & cultures is something I also find very attractive. We’ve never done the hotel/package/cruise type things though. Can’t see the point. If you are going to go to the bother of travelling why try to replicate what you have back home. Do as the locals do & discover so much more. A few years ago I would have happily planned for a ‘as long as it takes’ overland/around the world journey, but MrsTea was less keen. That sort of travel is ‘hard travel’ best undertaken when younger & fitter than we are, & so our compromise was Aussie adventuring, but we might still manage a bit of time exploring more of Asia at some point, just not for years at a time.

i see where you're coming from mate, but i guess it just isnt for me. Im not overly well travelled, have been to thailand, NZ 2x, hawaii, fiji and other coastal islands and all of those times i was dissapointed. NZ was OK, but that was because the rugby was on. sure i havent been to USA Mainland, or europe, and everyone says europe has so much history, sure, man made history. australia is steeped in history also, but it is naturally formed. i think it is incredible to look at some places in AU and see old seabeds, or where ancient tectonic movement has caused such incredible upheaval... i find that stuff wayyy more interesting!

I was part of the 'populate or perish' migration push is the late 1950's. Come to sunny Australia, kangaroos on every street and orange trees in every yard. I've still got the pamphlet that enticed my parents to migrate with four kids under nine years old.
All I can say is geez I'm glad they did. For them life was bloody tough, establishing themselves in a new country, learning a new language etc.
Us kids absolutely loved it. They went back to Europe for a four month holiday to visit family after being here for about fifteen years, after a few weeks they missed Australia so much they rescheduled their flights and returned ten weeks early.
I went back for a holiday about fourteen years ago, absolutely loved it, visited a few countries and when it was over I couldn't wait for the plane to arrive back home.
We won't travel overseas again, there's to much here to see and do.

2wd. It’s actually surprising how well these Patrols will go in 2wd. I remember this time last queens birthday weekend I took the fam away in the Vic high country and we did the entire weekend in 2wd on AT’s too. It was a pretty muddy weekend too. But the shitter held it’s own.
Last Easter I taught my 14yo daughter how to drive for the first time. On the Murray and she did real well. Not long now until she can legally drive the Patrol with L’s. lol

Bought another ARB 'difflock only' compressor, used it for one weekend, and second time went to use it, fuse blown. replaced fuse, blew again, great, Burgoynes gap without lockers!!! Anyway, returned the unit to ARB, they sent it away, report came back, 'rooted', give the man another one. I hope this isn't a pattern with these little compressors as the old ARB thumper that came with the lockers back in 1997 is still pumping away and now the dedicated tyre compressor. So happy with the process and great customer service in the end.

Will see how this one lasts, but its going to get expensive for them if I take a compressor back after every trip. I noticed a blue heat mark on the end of the motor and just hope its a simple random bush collapse.

Driving up the Freeway today, 2 lanes, 100KPH limit, light/medium traffic and (along with the others in that lane) doing my usual 102 KPH in the fast lane with the other lane doing 101 KPH.
I still muse upon the fact that the Freeways in WA are 100 limit but the shitty highways are 110 but I digress.

Anyhooow... Daniel Ricciardos' illegitimate brother (lets call him, uuuummmm, Knobjob) approaches from behind weaving thru the traffic streams, headlights a'blazin', darting here and diving there.
Sooo, KJ arrives, hard under brakes, behind me and the guy beside me glances across and I shrug and stay sitting on my 102 behind the 4X in front or me with KJ doing about 3 lane changes a second behind our group.
Nek minnut... KJ spots a gap in the slow lane cars 2 vehicles further up, cuts left into the emergency lane and metals it past two cars and... straight at the speed camera. FLASH... followed by general applause as KJ pounds the wheel and gives us all a huge display of fingers which a few of us return with headlight flashes and generic Wanker gestures.

I wanted to get him on dirt roads with lower tyre pressures so he could feel the difference for a while now, but that never happened..
To make it worse it wasn't a planned trip. No recovery gear or air compressor, so tyres were at road pressure.
I'll hit him up tomorrow if he wants to go out again, this time better prepared.

He's 18 next May, then I've got 15 months before the youngest is 16..[emoji30]

I can still clearly remember years ago going up the Pentland Hills (I think that's their name) on the way out of Melbourne heading to Ballarat. I was in the right hand lane doing 105 up one of those hills, which is more than respectable, and the guy behind me would have gladly murdered me for holding him up. I can still see him, leaning over his wife in the passenger seat, kids in the back & him yelling at me, wishing I was dead and wishing murder was legal as in his mind nothing was worse than making him wait for 5-15 seconds before I got out of his way.

That road between Melbourne & Ballarat, I don't think I've ever driven anywhere where you can almost be guaranteed to have someone tailgate the shite out of you every time you're on it.

Took the Patrol with Tvan hitched up, fully packed for long term travel, including full fuel tanks + 2 x 20 litre jerries of diesel on the Tvan, (total 220 litres)+ full water tanks in Patrol & Tvan (total 255 litres), & both of us in the cab, over both of the free VicRoads weighbridges on the Western Highway a few kms east of Ballarat today.

Two surprises.

1. Both weighbridges gave exactly the same results! (Gives greater confidence in their accuracy)
2. Weight of the Patrol (including the 100kg tow ball weight of the Tvan) was exactly the Patrol's upgraded GVM!

Patrol 3900kg
Tvan 1120Kg (ATM =1400kg & GTM =1270kg)

Given that most of the time fuel & water tanks won't be full, & food stocks at point of departure are the highest they will be I'm pretty happy (& relieved) about the result.

Since returning from Tassie we have removed a number of items we hadn't used (including an an unused under tray water tank), but added a few items for more remote travel (eg. spare shocks & a few other repair & servicing items) so couldn't be sure of what the weight would be. Although I don' think we are carrying anything superfluous it would not have surprised me if we had found we needed to find some weight savings, but as it stands all is good.

I know we are heavy & pay the price in acceleration, fuel consumption & hill climbing speeds, but we are not in a hurry - mostly happy to sit on around 80kph-85kph on good roads & to go as slow as conditions we find require.
We've kept fuel records since we left home last July on a phone app & the overall average over 21,570kms is 15.46 Litres per 100kms with a worst of 16.8 & a best of 13.6. Less is always better, but given the profile of a canopy wider than the body, a roof full of solar panels & an overall rig weight of around 5 tonnes I feel the old girl does us pretty well.

Thats awesome cuppa. How goot are our old tractor donks on juice? 13l/100 best up to 16l/100 worst with a non stressed engine. Modern, smaller 4x4 diesels arent getting much better than that (if any) and theyre working harder than the 42. And they depreciate fast.

I will admit, i have contemplated selling the gu2 through lack of use. My daily is a vx commodore, not worth much but gets drived a lot. 10l/100 generally and in good nick. I went through a stage where i contemplated selling that and the trol and with the 30 odd k buying something like a ranger or bt50 with the 3.2, and only paying 1 rego and 1 insurance. I dont really need a brute force rig for my kicks now, but when i sat down and thought through the financial pros and cons of that decision, im better off with the status quo due to the moderate fuel consumption and virtually zero depreciation of both current vehicles compared to newer vehicles.

Less is always better, but given the profile of a canopy wider than the body, a roof full of solar panels & an overall rig weight of around 5 tonnes I feel the old girl does us pretty well.

Hi Cuppa. I would have thought that at almost 5 tonnes, those fuel figures would be pretty pleasing. I get low 13s just driving around for work with a non loaded wagon.

Cuppa
22nd June 2018, 11:05 AM
Yes 10G, but I'd guess with your consumption figures you would probably commonly be sat on or around the speed limits? I'd suspect if we upped our usual cruising speeds to 95-100 we would see a big increase in fuel consumption.

I got the idea for a pic ab sent me and made the table from scrap at work, and it took me 2 hours to knock up plus painting time. The cot is all made from hard wood and weighs an absolute ton. Still have to manufacture the sliding front but I ran outta materials. I think I'll need a gas strut to lift the front you and down though haha

Finally spent our first night in our new home..
Amazing feeling.
Got the inlaws over this weekend so were taking a week off and tidying up the place..
First night was eventful to say the least.
Earth leakage switch kept tripping.
We were close to bailing back to the parents but the good old elecy over the phone said give it a hit.....
Yea righto but it worked.
The age of the switch is making it stick and not resetting..
All good but being replaced today.

Yeah one of the Territory Diesels at work has just had around 4K spent on it due to EGR and intake blockage issues from carbo build up. Had both EGR valves replaced and the intake removed and cleaned. But still has more issues. Carbon build up has played absolute havoc with this car and now it need a new turbo and a few other things and Fords quote is over 6K for this. The bloody car has only done 65thou too!

I'm more of a lurker than a contributor these days - for a lot of fantastic reasons. My driving school is really building momentum.

I’m nearly there.
 Dual controlled, 2019 manual Kia Cerato sedan (MY19) is here and is currently being fitted with dual foot controls and lots of ‘fruit’.
 Front and rear facing dash cams
 Wheatbelt Driving School mobile phone number
 Business cards and holders – ready for distribution
 National Police Clearance
 Working with Children’s check
 Provide First Aid
 Fridge magnets
 Methods of payments for lessons
 Liability Insurance Policy
 Civil Liability Insurance Policy
 Accountant and book-keeeper

Still to do, but not that far away!
 CERTIFICATE IV in TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS (ROAD TRANSPORT CAR DRIVING INSTRUCTION) TLI41216 - commencing 30 July
 Organise comprehensive motor vehicle insurance
 Comply with DoT paperwork – including medical assessment.
 Fire extinguisher
 First aid kit

For ‘peace of mind’ of every parent, student and myself, it is a legal requirement for me to put my car ‘over the pits’, every year.

My boss knows I'm resigning, but I haven't put it on paper, yet. lol.

I'll be finishing up on 05th September and first lesson should be on Sat, 8th September.

Take care out there.

Rossco

I had a Mini Gastric Bypass about 10 weeks ago and doing really well.

Pre-op I was 114kg and now down to 86.9kg.

I have not taken one diabetic, blood pressure, cholesterol or asprin tablet since the day of surgery - a saving of about $100 per month!

I'm stoked.

Went for my blood results today and all normal.

I must be doing something right, coz my doctor told me my clothes are hanging off me and to buy a new wardrobe! PML.

The jingle I used when driving in the US was to ensure the centreline was under my backside or near enough. I took the work van out a few times and found myself on the wrong side of the road multiple times - luckily the company was a big employer in the little town and locals were used to seeing it on the wrong side of the road as they had numerous international locations and became wary of 'out of country' drivers!

Been having a few issues with the old patrol death wobbles. Adjusted front wheel bearings while in Port Headland - still there. Dropped into the Bridgestone Tyre Centre in Wedgefield ( Friday 3/8 ) for a front wheel balance . Even though they were very busy after only 10 minutes wait they took my ute out the back. 15 minutes later returned my ute - balance completed ( yes they had fitted new weights ) I went to pay and they said that there was no charge. The receptionist then asked me to wait a few minutes - she disappeared out the back only to return moments later with 2 free stubby holders as a gift. 10/10 for service. Incidentally the wobbles were still there - I discovered later that the nut on the panhard rod was loose

I actually thought about the Stinger for 0.2 of a second. Yeah, Nah. PML. I needed a car with a bit of sportiness, but not that much!

It's the base model and I can't believe how many safety features it has. The 000 was pure luck. haha

Yes mate I love it. It hasn't been used much but when it gets used it is brilliant. Nothing beats having a long hot shower in the open on a minus degree morning in the high country.

Hume hwy a Patrol in front of me begins blowing tons of white smoke... Slowly coming to a halt to the side. I pull over to help as to me it smelt like a fire more than anything...
Family towing a camper on their way to QLD, just left home hours prior. Turns out their Patrol was running like shit on and off whole morning and they were borderline panicking. His poor wife had a gutful and was in tears. 2 kids on board.
ANyways they had their pre trip service and a few things replaced 3 days ago! He had the receipts in the books with them and I noticed one of the items replaced was the MAF sensor... Aha!!!
Walk over to the intake and lo' and behold the whole sensor assembly is hanging out by the wiring completely !!! Screws were not done up one may assume and eventually dropped out.

So sensor back in, we somehow done it up with a small screw driver as I didnt have any torx thingamajigs on me.
THey drove in front of me till Cragieburn pushing it hard and it drove like it should!! I just hope the sensor wasnt damaged while it was swinging around the engine bay and more so how much crap went into the intake and bypassed the air filter.

The bloke was just about crying in relief and thankfulness!
One famils holiday disaster averted... and off they go to Palms Cove. Half their luck!

ONe interesting thing though is the motor still ran and idled fine with sensor all the way out. Just no power and would not rev past 2000.
I thought that without the sensor the motor would not run at ALL. Hmmm .

It's the Aussie spirit mate, you try and lend a hand where one needs a hand shake ...
Today it just so happens, I used to own a crd Patrol and when I read his MAF got replaced I knew where to look. Otherwise I'd have been clueless and probably asked the forum. :)

I have a habit of pulling over when seeing people under a popped bonnet to say Hi. Especially Patrols.
Only once have I got told to f*** off and mind my own business. 4 years ago...

Took the kids on a solo daddy camp last night up at Murrindindi.

Pretty good spot actually, not too many hoons and a local Wallaby joined our camp, looks like he's pretty tame and well fed!
