Uhm, doesn't look very "soft roader" under the hood mate. Looks like its had a tickle or two. Congrats btw!

Edit : Actually. WTF? Thats very custom under there. I see no batteries and the air box is, where? Theres some serious coin thats been spent in there alone. Nice find!

Hahahahaha.

It has a stock pump. 2 inch lift, barely 175 rwhp, a little borg warner EFR, 2 mufflers bugger all flex. It's a plain Jane White GU ute with a canvas canopy. 100% road worthy and legal.... ffs it doesn't even have long arms lol

Truth be known Chrisso Mate, that’s the main reason it was purchased for....Littlens Fun, although I am still going to have a crack in the 1.4m long (apparently :-) tub myself solo adventuring one day [emoji106][emoji106]

I agree. Cannot beat Rooftops Marko mate! It's always best for resorting to teeny details.
One day might take my lot to work and use the large scanner to digitize. My navigation go-to bundle needs severe downsizing. Paper maps, books, large Hema rollup high coutnry maps. I've been using the Hema Explorer app ( the new version is s#ithouse), so looking out for somethign new. Also been using the Newtracs app for user-fed track conditions, which have been rather accurate during a few of my recent Dissa/Tallarook day ventures.
Might also have a geeze at Memory map as kindly suggested above and go from there...

New love for shortys seeing this today to be honest.

The room in the back is insane and the back seat folding tight up to the front seats leaves enough room for a party of gear.

Yes the rollover factor if extreme trips but a pretty cool little machine Nissan made.

Suss out the extra tank Mb, could be a winner with that!

340,000km Plassy Mate, the TB42 popped its lid a couple of years ago and instead of repair had a reco TB45 dropped in. It’s legitimately registered with the TB45 now as in Victoria this is not classified as an engine conversion requiring all that engineering caper due to it being exact OEM <>OEM configurations/bolt in with under 20% power increase [emoji106][emoji106]

So got it home, then started into the map download saga, bugger me I am stupid at times. Anyway, faffing around for 3 hrs, paid and downloaded the memory map and then hema maps aust wide, could not see anything - would not open files. Emerg call to Chris and 5 minutes, he had it fixed, simply needed a log-in to upload. Thanks Chris, HUGE relief, would have twisted my brain all night.

big winch. Are your winch and or crumple zone mounts/airbags if fitted up to this load? My son-in-law bought an LDV and the max load capacity for his vehicle is 8000lb winch, and looking at the tin foil chassis i doubt thats even over rated. TJM make a bar but 8000lb is his limit.

Hi mate, the winch I have fitted is an Ironman bullbar, they say you can fit up to 12000lb for max dimensions, and I have confirmed the winch will fit in cradle. Regarding the car, my neighbour is a boilermaker welder by trade, he has said the chassis platform the car sits on is lightyears ahead of our other neighbours 2019 Hilux, infact he went as far as to say it it is probably one of the best welded, and strongly constructed chassis' he has seen in the modern vehicle market. His bread and butter is he works on busses, trucks and light vehicles so I'll take his word for it.

To be fair I highly doubt I'll ever be loading the winch up that much as much as it's capacity, it was just a decent price, from a Victorian company(not king's) and I figured what can I loose.

Do you see any problems I hadn't considered?

Its a fair thing to suggest you won't use the capacity until you do. In the engineering field, you design the structure to suit the max load the winch can develop, and then whatever factor of safety. Look up some load recovery factors for bogged to the floor board vehicles, and see how the load magnifies. Ultimately your call at the end of the day, just don't let the recovery ops get away from the stated capacity of the bar - yes, your words say 12000lb max dimension, but ultimately you have a beast that supposedly can generate 17500lbs single line pull. If you do pull the chassis out of alignment or something lets go on the winch bar or mounts, could be an interesting conversation with the insurance company at best. If it was me, I would be guided by the capacity of the bar, rather than the assurances of the boilermaker next door.

fair call mate. i guess im never going to put this car into the position it will be bogged, or winching two vehicles out in situ, at max load ill be pulling over a tree in my yard, clearing a track or pulling the car loaded with firewood up a hill thats too slippery to drive. ill keep in mind your comments.

Does that mean if you winch out with a double line pull you would also be exceeding your bullbar capacity? Keen to hear it from an engineering perspective

If you have a single line pull with say a 4000kg load, the load on the rope is 4000kg, single point. If you run a double line pull with a 4000kg pull, the load on each rope is 2000kg, hence you have spread your load across 2 load points, each of 2000kg, which is a good thing from a chassis protection perspective.. This is why the winch works easier with a double line pull than a single line pull, however the line speed of the rope is halved or there abouts(depends on the speed to load rating of the winch.) This ls why i mentioned the point of taking care with the hook up, as if you have a 8000kg load you are going to be better off with a double line pull as the individual reaction loads are lower (4000kg/rope) than a single pull direct on the winch drum. What you would logically expect is for a winch bar rated at 12000lb/5400kg, you should be able to do a single line pull of 12000lb/5400kg that reacts thru the mounts and the chassis or winch mount, with certainty, there will not be any damage as the load is spread across the mounts in the bar and the chassis. The amps will be lower, your battery will like you more and the winch will stay cooler. So, if this was on my vehicle, and I knew the bar was rated for a 12000lb winch, I would probably default to double line pulls to ensure the bar capacity does not get exceeded, unless its a load you can accurately assess as below the 12000lb limit.. In theory, you can pull 16500lb x 2 on a double line pull at the drum, which is in excess of the single point loading for the 12000lb design point, so for safety you should be able to pull 24000lb on a double line pull and not exceed the bullbar manufacturers rating. Only caveat on this is how the bullbar manufacturer calculates the loading point limit - which we dont know. Also this is based on a straight line pull, not a pull on an obtuse angle. Nic, you can see there is a danger with a single line pull on 16500 V 12000lb capacity, and even still a potential if you get too confident on a double line to exceed the individual line loading. As a direct example, the son in laws vehicle is max rated for a winch at 8000lb and upon inspection, i can agree its a piss poor construction, but frustrating as I have 3 x 12000lb electric winches in my garage however dont have the confidence to put one of these on for fear he pulls the chassis out of alignment of even pulls the BB off.

I am jus highlighting some risk. You are smart enough and experienced enough to think it all through and exercise caution, unlike the 'send it brigade'.

Interesting conversation. I must say I was surprised when I went back a page to see what winch we are talking about. A 17K winch is Massive.

I have purchased a 13K winch for the 62. I grabbed a Runva from Sparesbox when Jaycee mentioned the sale.

I think one of the most important things to understand and probably thr most concerning is that the winch is not the weakest point here. We want the winch to stall out before something breaks. This by default is a safety factor. Stalls out, ok double line pull. Slow and steady. The 17K winch is a Beast. The 62 has a front axle weight issue too. Not sure what the 17k winch is. I supposed it really just must always be Eyes Wide Open. Think about the action. Think about the setup. Safety safety safety.

I definitely think that a bridle should be used in a double line pull and every effort to avoid grabbing 1 side of thd chassis. Again, the 17K will pull through much hard and not stall, I'd hate for you to Rake the chassis by accident. Share the load off both sides. A recovery point on both sides the centre to return off both rails via a bridle.

I assume I has a Rope and not a wire rope?

Ok. So this changes things a little. To start with it is running a 9.5mm rope..... regardless of your 17K capacity yoyr 9.5mm rope will let you down way way before you get near terminal pull. The 13K Runva I have bought has an 11mm rope. My 24v Himount runs a 12mm rope.

Know also your 17K will be measured on the first wrap of rope around the drum. It will probably be fine mate.

You will have no dramas mate. Have an actual look at the specs for that 17500lb winch over the real world runva 13xp.

The 17.5k lb winch has a 6.6hp motor with a 218.4:1 gearbox.

The runva has a 7.6hp motor with a 228:1 ratio gearbox.

So the runva 13hp will easily out pull the 17500lb item you have purchased so no stress for your chassis mate.

I am a little bothered by this Daz. The last thing you want is the rope to fail before the winch gives up. Looking at the capacity of various 9.5mm ropes they are all over the place regards minimum breaking point, some over and some under the max pull of the winch. i know we have some assurances that the winch is unlikely to be used to its capacity, but, who knows what can happen in a moment of stress or enthusiasm? I would want a rope that can withstand the 17500lb and then some, like increasing to the 11 or 12mm diameter. of course it depends on what duty and life its going to have, and no doubt your 24V high mount application is some distance away from this one. Its going to be hard to ascertain the grade of rope to be honest unless the manufacturer states the breaking load point of the rope. Again, play safely is probably my recommendation, and I would prefer to have the rope intact and the vehicle safely anchored, and the winch stalled or go out on thermal than have the rope give way before it reaches the rated pull - just my way of thinking. If I could not ascertain the grade or breaking point of the rope or the rope does not have a factor of safety of at least 1.5 : 1 at 17500lb, i would probably swap it out for a known load rated rope. Or, just work within the known capacity, but difficult unless you have a strain gauge attached to the rope at some point. Good conversation this guys. I like the pick up about the bridle which makes good sense, and the max capacity at the drum, so I guess it may be ok as configured - probably thinking too hard about this and from a compliance/lifting perspective.

I agree a broken rope sux. I have broken more than my fair share. At the end of the day the forces needed to break thr rope really won't be evident winching up a hill. The most likely time will be chassis deep in mud with a suction factor of 300%. When the rope breaks you ain't going anywhere.

As Matt pointed out well though... it's a nice shiny Sticker. Don't believe the sticker.

My Kanga trailer is only rated to 1950kg and pre-upgrades recently had a 50mm square axle.
Two reasons I chose the 60mm round Huntsman one for the upgrade were:

1) I don’t fully trust the 3,000kg chinese rating so factored at least 25% greater for that.
2) I installed wider guards to cover it’s now 33x12.5” tyres (vehicle matching/sharing) so the axle is extended to its recommended maximum 150mm spring center to brake backing plate.

On the way home today the batteries I flattened were thrown on it too charge and sure enough it works great. Ran a dual Port rapid charger with ease. It has a small digital panel on it too, which displays batteries voltage(not that important as I already have that displayed in several locations) but more importantly the current wattage draw.

When we did Tassie in Jan 2020 i fitted a 1500/3000 pure sine wave i had had for a few years into the back of the GUIV and a 3rd battery specifically for the Makita charger so i could take the 18V Chainsaw. Worked a Treat! Did you fuse between your battery and the inverter? You have a Battery in the back yeah?

Watts =Volts by Amps so Amps equals Watt divided by volts. 3000 divided by Twelve = 250 amps. Seeing this is at best 95% efficient 3000 watts is 263 amps.

Peak Wattage 6000 watts is 526 amps. I know peak wattage is for current on start up and you probably will run a kettle at 2000watts. You'll need some seriously heavy cables to supply that kind of current without voltage drop.

I used an old TV as a monitor when I helped make a short comedy about motorcycling. The three fully charged batteries were drained very quickly. We ended up running a car to try and keep going. The unit used welding cable and they still got warm.

It'll certainly do the job, but if that is it's main job it's a huge overkill. We carry a Makita Chainsaw & an impact driver which use 18v batteries. I charge them on a rapid charger (admittedly one at a time) using a 350watt inverter.

The main thing with using an inverter when driving (not something I do anymore) is to mitigate the risk that this poses by having the shortest distance possible between the inverter & the appliance it is powering & doing whatever you can to protect it. The risk is that in the event of an accident the 240v cable could potentially be damaged & cause risk of electrocution to any rescuers (or car occupants) if the damaged cable comes into contact with a metal part of the car - making the entire car 'live'.

hi mate, i have an 800w inverter from jayvar and it just would not do the job. i figured the draw must be too big as it would only power a single input slow charger. have i missed anything here?

hi mate, i have an 800w inverter from jayvar and it just would not do the job. i figured the draw must be too big as it would only power a single input slow charger. have i missed anything here?

Doesn't sound right to me. My Victron Phoenix 350w inverter charges my Makita batteries without problem, one at a time using a Makita fast charger. Initially I had a 30 amp circuit breaker but it would keep tripping it, & checking showed that it would pull up to 32 amps briefly. I fitted a larger circuit breaker & have never had any problem charging the Makita batteries since. By rights 32 amps is pushing the limits of a 350w inverter in a 12v system, (at 12v it equals 384w, at 13v it equals 416w) but Victron under rate their inverters & I have tested mine at 500w for 1 hour & it just kept going. It probably weighs much the same as 3000w one because it contains a toroidal coil - which according to folk who know more than me is a sign of quality in an inverter.

If an 800w inverter couldn't charge a single 18v Makita battery on fast charge there must either have been something wrong with it or the label was telling porkies about it's capacity, but if drawing double the amps (64 amps) on an 800w rated inverter with a dual charger , especially if the inverter rating was marginal at best (or over-rated as many are) then it would be understandable that it couldn't manage. 64 amps at 12v =768w & at 13 v =832w.

It would be interesting to compare the cost of my inverter with your 800w one & your 3000w one, although of course if you need to charge two batteries at once my one would not suffice.
Current cost of my one is $170 with a 5 year warranty. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/373059362612?epid=23034419836&hash=item56dc121f34:g:GHYAAOSwPqphOr~3&frcectupt=true (actually 375w - not sure if they do the 350w any more)
The 800w version (also with 5 year warranty) & I'm confident it would charge the two batteries at once, is around $470. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274473899029?hash=item3fe7eb5415:g:loAAAOSwwUlfR6n 3&frcectupt=true

8447384474Interesting! All I can think is I just didn't have a wire than was up to scratch running to it. For what it's worth I paid nothing for the 800w job, I inherited it from the father in-law, and I paid $288 for the 3000w psw job. If all I needed was to up the input wire I guess I'm silly but it's not the end of the world as I'm not out of pocket that much. This is what i bought fyi.

Picked up one of these 40t beasts from Batlow today. I reckon it’s been used once and left for a year and sold.
Still had what might have been original fuel in it…lol
Quick drain and top up and she started first go.
Not bad for about a third of new price
….seriously don’t know why I haven’t bought one earlier..lol

Yestdy actually.

130 amp alternator, JAS oceania, made by Chin Lee of course.
Around 400 clams plus fitting and heavier cables.
Had to do it 'cause some moron (I will not incriminate myself)
added an extra battery to the backpack camper and the dcbc chargers were arguing
over who got the bulk of the juice.
Now with all leccy bits blazing, IC fan and pump, AC, high beam and light bar etc,
Making 14.4 volts on the start battery at 1000rpm.
Pretty damn good I'm thinking. :Yahoo!:

Got this to basically use the gauge to measure my TD42 vacuum pump output and to be able to pump vacuum into the brake/clutch booster and see them doing their things, but it also comes with that brake fluid reservoir so you can allegedly purge the fluid without pumping from the pedals, which seems like a good thing.

Couple of spare parts for the motor, custom s/c snout pulley in mild steel instead of aluminium - have read two stories of the alum units cracking and shearing off, and a spare static idler pulley, again, custom. Can't have too many spares i reckon especially when they can cripple the vehicle and leave you stranded. Took 7 weeks of chasing to get them.

Sorry Mark, didn’t see your question before now..

A Lokka suits the way I use the Patrol. I don’t do any hard stuff so this will just give me a cost effective way to add a bit of an advantage that might be helpful one day.

It’s easy to fit myself in the shed. I’ve had the axles out before so no surprises there. I’ll just need to be careful with the diff centre weight.

I couldn’t really justify the other options at twice the price, or more, for the amount of time I use the Patrol.

I’ve read a fair bit about them and it just means you need to change some driving habits slightly. If you don’t take your corners under power, the teeth slip easier to allow the differential action.
If it really gets annoying on long stretches where you can’t really get by with 2WD, you can simply unlock one hub.

Traded some used tires for such jack type some 10 years ago. Mine is a T-Max. It was a good deal since the tires would eventually get useless and the jack is still around, but I confess I have never had the guts to really use it. It is a cool tool but dangerous as it can be. And it must weight half my weight, that is another factor, LOL.

Picked up a Drill Doctor 750x today from total Tools. It will sharpen up to 3/4" dia. I have hundreds of drill bits in the garage - maybe a thousand, because when I use them and they go dull I have simply bought more, trouble is the cost of a 1 -13mm set is pushing over the $100 for a while now. I have reduced shank drills up to 38mm also, but to get a sharpener for this range is over 3K. Anyway, 3 - 19mm, knocked over about 50 bits today before the heat got the better of me. The results are brilliant - totally recommend this device. On special for $499, picked mine up for $479, normally $549. High quality, easy to operate and there are replacement parts avail as well such as the diamond grinding wheel and the 3 -19mm collett. It will also sharpen the masonry bits and any angle from circa 110 deg to 140 deg based on the span of adjustment. The surface finish of the ground surface is adjustable on the 750 so you can generate a quick strip grind and finish off with a super fine finish. I also converted 5 drill bits, circa 10mm dia from snapped off flat finish back to fully ground end noses, easy. The larger bits I am going to bundle up and organise for a mobile drill sharpener guy to give them a sharpen.

Darren, I have read good things about them. I looked at the redarc 3000w however at $2800 V $369 I could not determine what advantage I would get for the extra. I know a guy with the redarc and he swears by it, however its spec sheet is vague and simply appears to have a redarc marketing sticker on it or the red paint is more expensive than the blue!! My original unit is still working, just seems to drop the coffee machine out earlier than when first installed and the only thing that has changed is the fume issue. i will let you know in due course though. Pretty big unit though, be warned.

Good call. Was taught how to do up to 1/2" as a young 'un. You either got the knack or don't. It seems I am losing the ability as my eyes aren't that good any more. It will be interesting to see if the sharpener gives the bit a proper rake angle. I have seen "Sharpeners" that only give the proper chisel (the square point on top) and point angle (general profile). After that you have to manually take material off so it will cut.

I occasionally surprise myself and get it right. The rest of the time I let the bit rub its way through instead of cutting. My instructor would have a heart attack if he knew !!

Yeah I was taught as an Apprentice too. In the days before single use consumerables and disposables. I can hand sharpen any size drill bit, hand sharpen and set a panel saw cross cut and rip. I kind of take it for granted to be honest. Nice skill to have. The drill doctor system seems great and I have had one in my hand a few times but never bought one. I sure it would be consistent and sharp which is a winner. As I go blind with age doing it by hand gets a little tougher.

I have a drill doctor but still managed to make blunt drill bits, blunter. Lol.

It will be interesting to see if the sharpener gives the bit a proper rake angle. I have seen "Sharpeners" that only give the proper chisel (the square point on top) and point angle (general profile). After that you have to manually take material off so it will cut.

The unit has a special undercut profile i believe that can be configured for the style you mention - have not gone there as yet as dont really know the details of why its used to be honest. The unit is really good at returning the face to original, ar optically as close as you can tell.

I did stuff up the first drill bit, in a big way, but again, read the instructions and all will be revealed. My mistake was not using the drill bit set-up gauge correctly, and I had the flutes 90 deg out of whack with the sharpening profile. Destroyed the bit complete, Anyway, back to the booklet, and correction made, drill bit returned to its former shape, but sharper.

Instructions?! I am a mere male. We don’t read instructions. We throw them out. My sharpener is faulty I say![emoji2]

I try to tell the wife that my Patrol is faulty so I need a new one, but this is not working for some reason.

Itech 3000amp jump starter. Have the 900amp unit in the Subaru, thought I would drop one in the patrol for good measure

3000 amp peak current sounds impressive. What does that equate to in the more relatable cold cranking amps PB?

3000 amp through those cables and connectors. Apparently the laws of physics don't apply to advertising. But upon saying that, they are a good thing to have for emergency use.

Its simply a duty cycle issue in most regards. The 'device' will only supply what the driven device requires. My starter wont draw 3000amps, plus for the instant the current flows, the cables temp with rise with the resistance and its going to be over and done, car started. The insulation will take that heat for the highly intermittent times it is used. I have no doubt there is some marketing BS associated, and there may be an element also of prolonged capacity to it as well, don't care, just as long as the damn thing works when I need it, I am not too concerned with the physics of it .

Have a look at this one - 20,000amps!

Well, should settle today.

Two adjoining blocks a bit over 1000sqm each at Armstrong Beach just east of Sarina Qld.
Short walk/drive to the beach/boat ramp and only 10k to the golf course.

Wow… I will get one of these itechworld rippers to start my Abrams M1 (whilst wearing my arc flash PPE )
Being able to supply 3000 amps for 1 millisecond means you can print that on the box I guess….

Plassy, I didn't know so rang Itech and they advise the 3000a designation is actually 3000CCA, however it is duty rated. So whilst a larger battery AGM/Wet Cell, even lithium has a CCA it also has a listed reserve capacity where it will deliver at some rating (probably assume the ability to supply some cranking capacity before either the internal cells get too hot or the current is depleted to the point of either being ineffective or unable to adequately crank.. The ITECH unit is 3000CCA, but the duty point is massively lower time wise, however it is alternately linked to the number of starts at that rated 3000CCA. I think the box states the unit can do 40 jump starts on up to an 8L diesel before requiring a recharge, however unsure if these are one after another of some other timeline. Anyway, its a monster

Yeah gotcha, sounds good. I recently developed a flat battery in my 4.0L petrol daily and was very disappointed to have my fully charged peak current 600A (start current >300A) Wuldmar power pack fail to start it. Ended up with a jump start from a Landcruiser just to rub it in. I don't trust it now so need something with more oomph.
