I think you’ll find that the temperature reading is the temperature of the battery. An unexpected rise in temperature whilst the battery is charging can be an indicator of a problem. Battery temp sensors are usually just a lead attached to one of the terminals, so quite feasible that what you have bought can do this. Many of the better chargers have temp sensors attached to the battery in this way, & adjust the charging voltage dependent upon the temperature. This helps to extend battery lifespan.

Out of interest can it tell you how many amps are going in or out at any one time?

Did I read somewhere Cuppa, that you have a Victron BMV-702 monitor for your batteries? If so, they have a BT dongle that plugs into it now, that will tell you this. This is how I monitor my batteries/solar panels, while sipping a bourbon in my camp chair. It sends the data to my phone. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VICTRON-VE-DIRECT-BLUETOOTH-DONGLE-WIRELESSLY-MONITOR-YOUR-BMV-OR-MPPT-ON-APP-/281752240958

No Steve, I have a NASA BM1 battery monitor which counts amps in & out & shows real time amps in & out. (Uses a shunt). I wish this sort of phone technology had been available when I installed my set up. It would have far easier & saved me a bit of grief. How does the app calculate SoC? Do you have to input the battery size when setting it up?

My Dual battery loads are connected via a Shunt to the BMV-702 so all loads in and out are measured. I am using a Lifepo4 battery which has around a 99%+ charge efficiency, so it's pretty accurate. The app simply recives the BMV data over bluetooth, so its not calculating anything, just displaying the data remotely. Yes, battery size needs to be input initially.

Yep, you'd need the BMV-702, and the VE-Direct BT Dongle, the app is free. Not cheap but Victron gear is top notch. I have the BMV-702 in my pillar pod, but its pretty ugly next to the redarc gauge, so I think I'll move it down the back somewhere and just use the app.

Just ordered a front Pro-locker. E-lockers are ok but I need a tank
that will hold a bit of air. plus they both do the same thing anyway and leaves me extra $$$ for other projects
Also brought a 3mt x 2mt wall for my awning, keep a bit of weather out if I dont take my camper.
Now to strip the tank out of the other 4x4 been meaning on doing it for months now. Nice big tank
that will allow me to run air tools if I decide to go that way

Picked up a bargain on a Sony 55"HD Smart TV for the spare room. A two week old current model demo. The shop was just starting to move a dozen or so demos to another wall, to fit more in. Sticker price was $1,499 I offered them $950 on the spot and they took it. Full warranty, not a mark on it. Wasn't even shopping for a TV. Right place, right time. The 4wd shows will look good on it.

Don't know why @anyone but I don't get these tag notification..

The first one would have been better it had 94,000 Ks and was a 06, but this was the last message I got from the guy trying to get rid of it.

It is complicated as it is a lady name on that loan not my friend . It seem that the loan was taken by the Asian Girl in Sydney . She came to Melb change plate etc and sold it to my friend fir cash then vanished.
As my friend swear that he did not have any finance on it .
Thus what I can ascertain .
I don't understand why Vic road did not have it on their record . It not registered as stolen etc
Some one is not telling the truth.

So we ended up with another blue car. This one sounds better than my r8 really deep. 👍

Stumbled across a garage sale near us and it turned out that the elderly gent used to be a canvas maker and leathercrafter and was closing up his business.

Ended up with an insane amount of canvas, vinyl, leather, old school leather tools, hardware and rivers etc and an industrial sewing machine to add to my collection of gear.

Wish I had to coin and space to buy the rest of his gear which included an industrial overlocker, hydraulic press and clicker press and dies

It will be about 80 litres, I had it made a bit shorter (800mm) than the full width of the Patrol. so I could leave room for my distribution box and wiring etc in an easily accessible place for my rear mounted Lifepo4 battery. I also have 1/2" outlets on both sides, but will use a Topargee inline meter to let me know exactly how many litres I have left in it. 1/2" breather on top and 1-1/2" filler to make it easy if I need to fill from a container.
I had a 70 litre tank in my last vehicle and loved the ease of use. The last trip in the Patrol was a pain in the ass using Jerry's etc.

Currently in discussions with wayne at Topagee regards a fuel consumption system. This measures flow to and from engine, does the subtraction, and gives instantaneous and total fuel usage. Not 100% sure this is enough, would prefer an average plus instant, and then total, but would probably have to move towards a Scintex system for that at greater cost.

I think to get an extremely accurate fuel consumption meter, you will have no choice but to go down the Scintex path. Personally I think it's overkill and won't benefit you much. As you are no doubt aware you need to do your fuel calculations before you are on a trip and then carry the appropriate qty of fuel. The ability to measure your actual fuel usage on the fly really won't matter if you don't have the fuel with you to start with. Better to assume worst case scenario and carry enough fuel to cover this on some shorter similar style trips. You will soon work out what you need to carry to cover the longer trips in similar country and conditions.

The system I am in discussions about is not advertised on their website. It's a highly precise system with totally different style of flowmeters and controllers. My concerns stem from a conversation with the guys in Bunbury who set up these pumps. They told me the consumption on this engine can be as high as 1 lpm!! Can you now see why I might be a little focused on accurate fuel use rates! This is at WOT but still is horrendous. I will see where this lands, but spending 1k in advance on accurate information is better in my mind on a number of fronts and does allow for better planning.

The 1 LPM was for the 6.5 at WOT, but I am selecting a flowmeter with a range of 0.5 to 100lpm to cover the surge. If the flow exceeds the rated flow, it will choke the diesel feed to the engine by whatever the difference is. I can see this happening a bit especially in low range stuff. I tend to dawdle along at less than 2500rpm on the road most of the time. I have been getting pretty good economy, but its highly speculative to be honest as the type of driving changes a lot over a weekend trip, so I dont really know what I am burning thru accurately.

Had a late night ebay splurge. :)

We hope to fall into a pattern of using the ‘choofa’ I made from a 9Kg gas bottle for cooking as the norm, rather than using gas - it allows for use of an ‘open’ fire in more places. The price to pay for this is the need to collect firewood to fit the choofa.

Over the past few years I’ve considered the best way to do this.

First I bought a medium size Fiskar axe after being impressed with Threedog’s one at Murray camping weekends. This is good when there is something available to use as a chopping block, but that is not always the case.

Then I thought a cordless reciprocating saw would be a good idea & bought one, but whilst it will do the job I find it a cumbersome & not particularly pleasant tool to use for the task, particularly when the firewood being cut is not still attached to a larger more solid piece of tree. (Good for garden pruning though).

So then I bought an eBay cheapie 10” petrol chainsaw. It is very effective even if it does feel cheap & nasty compared to my larger Stihl. It’s plastic construction isn’t designed to last but it’s good enough for for camp firewood use.... have to carry a container of petrol & the saw leaks chain & bar oil when stored, but worst if kept inside the pod it contaminates the entire inside of the pod with the stink of petrol. Opening a pod door after it’s sat in there for a day the fumes are really strong & I don’t really have anywhere else suitable to carry it so have become reluctant to take it with us.

I had previously discounted cordless chainsaws as too expensive. All my cordless tools are Makita, & I was unwilling to shell out for any tool requiring the purchase of different batteries & charger to what I already have, (I have several 4Ah Makita batteries) particularly as I also want to carry my cordless drill or impact driver. Taking different types of batteries, plus two chargers wasn’t an option. Makita cordless chainsaws are generally priced at $400 upward.

In the early hours of this morning I came across a Melbourne seller selling Makita cordless chainsaws on eBay - they are American imports, almost the same as the model sold here, but with a different USA model number. Only difference is it has a 12” bar instead of a 10” one. Still double what I paid for the petrol cheapie, but at $299 cheap compared to buying an Australian model ....... so “Bugger it” I thought, “why not add yet another item to my collection of firewood gathering white elephants :D” & clicked the ‘Buy it now’ button.
I suspect (& hope) a cordless chainsaw is really what I should have bought in the first place ......... but at least I now have choice! Ha ha.

72287

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Makita-Chainsaw-Cordless-18V-x2-36V-LXT-Li-Ion-XCU02Z-BARE-TOOL/262946232257?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

For folk not already ‘wedded’ to a cordless battery system, I reckon the pick of available cordless chainsaws would be the Stihl 12” model, availablefor $460 plus battery .... not sure of battery cost but I’d guess a total of close to $700.

I’m also under no illusion that a battery operated chainsaw is going to have the power of an equivalent sized petrol version but from what I read they are certainly up to the task of keeping the camp fire fed.

All I have is a fold up hand saw but I don't have to be as precise with the size of my firewood for cooking, just leave it hanging out the back of the plate.

Believe me I considered a hand saw, I already have a couple of bow saws, & I looked at a few folding types. If it were for short holidays or weekends away no probs, but for full time daily use - I get enough of that sort of exercise grinding my coffee each day! :) We do also have a hotplate with legs which would require less cutting wood to length, but we need to take either that or the choofer, not both, & the choofer allows for a fire in more places.

Can you attach your drill to the shaft on your manual coffee grinder?

Cuppa, picked up one of these a couple of weeks ago, then batteries and charger. Reckon they will be fine for quick small wood cuts. Also take the petrol element of out play. Keen to see how long/how much wood can be cut with 2 x 5ah batteries. I have the 10" model which would be fine for small fires I reckon.

Yup! I have been known to do that with my older Zassenhaus (wooden box with cast iron burrs) grinder. I now have a much smaller Porlex (stainless tubular with ceramic burrs) grinder - not sure if the extra speed would affect the ceramic burrs

Tried out the Makita 36V chainsaw today, pretty impressive little beast. I would put it in the category of 4-5" wood max, dicing up firewood after the bigger stuff has been dragged back to camp, very handy for track clearing up to the bar limitation x 2, which is 10" bar. Running 2 x 5ah batteries, so unsure of life limitations, will buy another pair as a back up. Fits into a very compact carry bag and light to use, really light.723777237872379

Couldn't find 1/2 the things I knew I had 'somewhere'
Spat the chewey and went and bought two bays of shelves, some suitable sized totes and two work benches with double draws.
Emptied shed
Installed racks and benches
Sorted all the gear getting more and more excited over the 'treasures' I found
Put all the gear into appropriate totes/draws/shelves
Spent the next month tossing 90% of the shit around looking for what I wanted and forgotten where its new spot was
Shed now has shit everywhere again but at least I can find 1/2 of it

BAHAHAHHAHA 😝😂 Pisa mate

Electric side mirrors for the GQ , I put Silverado mirrors on it .

Was nothing wrong with the radiator , it was in the GU when we bought it but owner wanted to put a new one in because of overheating issues when pulling the van , missus wanted a quick buy so he put a natrad radiator in the back and I told him I would fit it .
After fitting it heating issues remained I just learned what gear to be in on hills and leave OD off .
Put it in the natrad box for protection but haven't opened it for two years I'll make sure no damage .
I'm near Glenrowan but may have to make a trip to the big smoke to get a warranty claim done on the camper trailer although I'm fighting to get it done local .

Opus , last years model , it handled all the tracks around the corner country and lots of very bad corrigations, bulldust holes and unexpected washaway dips with ease so it's certainly a tough unit , even took it into Wonnangatta.

I swapped a couple of old CV shafts to suit a Gen 4 Pajero for this 60 litre fuel tank: I've had the CV shafts sitting in the shed for a couple of years, so good to see them turn into something I can use.
This will come in handy for my upcoming Madigan Line trip. I'd prefer to have long range tanks fitted, but don't have the cash at the moment so this 60 litre tank behind the passenger seat and 3 jerry's should cover it. (2 on the roof and one in the cabin.)

660 Cfm isnt enough for a 6.5 turbo chev. They also by design can remove the heavier dust particles just as they do with water removal. A ram head coupled with a high volume airbox will see performance gains both in response and overall figures. Thus equating to a minor advantage for fuel consumption.

Among other things.

Mine is naturally aspirated and this rating is satisfactory, There simply is not a lot bigger in capacity within the same footprint. - happy to be corrected. I am yet to see how a cyclonic reduction of dust particles, which means an extension of filter life and extended efficiency can be achieved by a ram head which of course it can't and I understand you are not saying that, simply by removal of circa 70% incoming dust load equates to greater 'breathability'. I have clogged a standard brand new filter in a single day driving in dusty conditions without the cyclonic precleaner. Simply removing the dust load is the key. Taking 70% of that dust laod away is an advantage.

. Sorry, I have extensive design and application experience with engine air filtration within the heavy haulage arena, including high dust loads for near static plant, so a cyclonic separator is best for me in slow moving conditions. I use a RAM head for convenience only, as the Donaldson is not that resistant to branches in the scrub as I have found twice ( its a big tree catching plastic tub). The fitter box fitted to this engine is as big as can fit, so its a simple matter of working with what is avail. I have looked at higher cloth areas within the same cartridge footprint, but this is it. At the end of the day its all about air to cloth ratio and filtration efficiency. This is my focus as it bwill improve economy and ultimately reduce the amount of solids into the engine.

Its interesting that few/none of the vehicle manufacturers offer a factory fit ram head, or at least I have not seen one. I know land rover and toyota offer a semi cyclonic pre filter on their snorkels from memory. There may be pressure loading figures floating around and performance gains implied and even experienced by ram head users, however I am not buying into whether the ram head works better or achieves a better outcome, simply that I have defined my application based on experience. You may well have different views and I am happy to listen to them as long as they can be validated.

Its all good purely a suggestion. I also have experience in the field of filtration although from a differing perspective. Heavy non-highway equipment use the cyclonic method with the use of many conical venturi. They also employ dust extraction utilising the exhaust system.

For what its worth we have data logged data and using manufacturers supplied compressor and turbine maps can see that the use of a ram head on a high output turbo td42 gains us 15% in efficiency of the turbo this equates to the turbo actually working less to produce the same volume.

Under what circumstances are the gains achieved? Is this at speed or static? At the end of the day the ram head is simply a cowl and its design efficiency has limitations when static- I am guessing these gains would be with the vehicle moving across a range of speeds?

Its while being driven etc. You simply dont have the load to make the turbo work to its ability static. Most people drive their patrols ;p

Yes, clever response, I was trying to enquire if the data logged was on a dyno or actually driving and logged over time - my mistake. I did some work in a diesel engine powered power station utilising of all things the dreaded 6.5 chev diesel engine x 12 units but these were turbo charged and we also data logged these engines across a wide band of criteria, hence why i asked. They were load controlled via electrical demand on the generators, hence would operate over a medium band of revs.

This looks damn interesting. If only it would work with 12v input :( does it have 2 preset pressures? An offroad and onroad pressure setting without having to manually go up and down every time?
Pull up plug it on and it airs down then when your done plug it back on and it auto airs up.

Can you add a hose line to the deflation vent? I have a wagon would be good if you could externally vent it, more for the noise etc.

Something like this would be mint with an endless air system.

Top idea UncleFrosty mate. I do now remember reading on here somewhere of blokes using those fittings, specifically 4 of them one nearest each tyre for only short hookup hoses needed.
I also just realised that it is the old screw on 'open' type inflators that was my concern. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/08/50.jpg

For my current needs gents think I'll just stick with the single hose reel for now. I generally run an extra 2psi in my utes rears so a cool level all function would hinder that for me. Time wise I'm thinking my compressor will only do what it can do too. Connecting up four small hoses for us I imagine would take as much time I think as shifting the one main hose four times. Would be pretty cool though being able to say pack up camp away from the truck whilst all four inflate simultaneously:-)

Most welcome Sooty mate! I have heard great things of the Endless Air Compressors http://www.endlessair.com.au/ . My ARB Twin and 20L tank also do a pretty good job offroad and around the property, quite happy. Apparently an air tank can be used for many other recreational pass times too, albeit illegal in Australia but fun to watch :-)

why would these be any more illegal than any other air horn? Is it the tone recognition, ie is this a statutory horn tone for freight trains? I can see them being a traffic infringement item if you are pissing around with them like these clowns, which is funny as, but a replacement to a standard horn - unsure if it would attract an ADR infringement notice. Ebay here I come.

I believe it's the 'Heart Foundation' mate!
If you had of seen Plasnart's under bonnet shock from the Patrol firetruck elecy horn joke at AB's donk party would have near killed the poor bloke with train-air jobbies :-(

I've got an old Klaxton horn that I used to scare the piss out of certain people when I was younger , won't fit under the bonnet of the GQ though .

I acquired an old police siren from the way old days - the style that used to sit in the middle of the bonnet, was on the old 'Homicide' televison series. They draw about 30amps from memory, take a couple of seconds to wind up then its very very noisy. but they take the same time to wind down. Heavy, probably 7kg at a guess. Have not found a spot for it yet.

Damn you engineers overthink stuff :-( If these blokes can do it, we all can find a way :-)

I was sleeping in the car and now have the rv5 which is awesome but just not practical for quick trips and definitely not practical in snow.

Agree, hopeless in snow, not designed for it. Last years snow trip had one collapse at 2am in a howling blizzard and with 30cm snow on the roof, snapped poles on both sides, not covered by warranty. Guy was not happy but its not a 4 seasons tent.

Yeah the rv5 is a wonderful tent but I agree, the frame is definitely vulnerable. I camped with crazy winds one night and the frame was very close to bending on winds hitting the side. If it wasn't for the tie downs it would've folded in half for sure.

Any excessive weight on top would crumble it.
