After seeing PeeBee's electrical overload melting his CTEK and this video of a VW catching Fire from an electrical fault (https://youtu.be/6VTZmp3oPz0) I picked up a 1kg Fire extinguisher on sale at Bunnings today.
$16.89 down from $19.90.
I also grabbed some scrap aluminium from the metal recyclers to make a bracket to mount it in front of the passenger seat.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2020/01/93.jpg

Good choice but a simpler solution, in my case anyway was to simply concentrate on what I was doing and put my brain into gear.

I have 2 in the GU. I have used one on a fully involved engine fire of a Commodore in the middle of the road. Saved his car for sure.
In have mine mounted to the base of the B Pillar behind he driver's seat. Is perfect there. They really should be mounted standing if possible.

Well, another wire solder kit arrived in the post today, must have ordered it, cant remember. This one works as intended. It has a tricky plasitic sleeve over the solder that is used to house some small red locator and guide rings to assist the wire pigtails getting aligned inside the solder donut. During the solder melt stage, the plastic shield degrades/disappears. a supplementary shrink sleeve is supplied and then slid over the heat affected zone to complete the joint. It is a good system I think, does it save time over the more manual wire twist solder then shrink sleeve - maybe not, however it hoes have all the bits in one place and pre-cut for use. 7988479885798857988679887
Looking at the soldered joint it looks pretty average, however I think this is the plastic melted on the outside - the solder definitely runs thru and over the entire wire joint and is mechanically sound.

I got two in the front of the GU, one in front of each seat on the floor.
When they go end of life I'll be replacing them with the newer style of exitinguisher. Can't remember what they're called, but they're smaller & last longer and I don't think they have an end of life date.

Bought this DC-DC charge controller, 50amp unit, good size for the 400a/h bank in the back. It looks like it has the goods for the job, and I won't be using the MPPT side of it, so less heat stress into it as well. Looked at the Redarc, but physically too large in size and too much money for the duty it would see from me. Time will tell if this setup suits my application

I really wanted to support redarc when I got my dc-dc charger but just not even in the same league price wise. I couldn't justify spending that much money on something that get sporadic use at best. It was a foreign unit or nothing for me :/
That one looks like it should do what it needs too.

I think its looks Ok as well. Its about value V performance and time will tell if I have made the correct choice. The Victron MPPT unit that Cuppa recommended is clearly more efficient than the CTEK unit I had - you can see it in the voltage and current rates. I don't expect to be operating this unit at 50amps beyond a few minutes to be honest, so it does not justify the Redarc. the Redarc is premium stock, but like you, to buy at the top end by default is simply not logical.

Already has the bracing done mate. Mal at S.G Leslie & sons done the lot. Braced it, smaller hub on the drum, shampfered the drum end plates so they dont cut into the rope, done the bearing mod to the drum and end plate, fill and drain holes. To only thin that wasn't done was a breather port. Which I can do.
Then, once this is all back together i need to shoe horn this into my bar somehow. I'll get the bar sandblasted and powdercoated after all this, she's looking a bit second hand.

I agree Nic mate, nearly 30 years of scooting around with work utes in Vic have never been questioned once to date. The plumber here got done with an old style occy web version where the officer could reach his hand through the holes and wiggle out a pvc junction from its cardboard box.
Must say, this new to me cargo net is pretty easy though, like Winnie kindly mentioned with his Vic professional work, think I’ll just make it my new daily Nationwide now [emoji106][emoji106]

It all depends on what you are carrying - the net has to be fine enough to contain the smallest item and strong enough to contain the heaviest item it is covering. Always best to have a fine strong net which will suit everything. The net also has to be secured well and not just thrown over with occy straps like some tradies do. It is all about insecure loads (and nothing to do with revenue raising of course).

I've had a bit of a search for stripping a Ridge Ryder, because I want to see how they are constructed. My Aldi winch will drag my Patrol across cement in 4 H, hubs locked, 5th gear and hand brake on tight. But the first stage gears are just molded into the alloy case, and the brake is only lightly built.

Coming home had to stop at lights in Yarragon, lights turn green go for second gee what was that, trying to get into second WTF in the right hand lane with a line of vehicles behind me, manage to force it into gear and drive up to a right turn lane, at the same time pressing the clutch pedal in vain. Pull up at the end of the turning lane, now what.
Traffic had cleared so manage to force it into first and started moving, got into left lane and with a bit of finessing got to fourth. So I thought get as close to home as possible then call RACV. There is not a traffic light between there and the United Servo on Dandenong Hastings Road so I would only have to stop if traffic got bad. Only had to wait about 75 min to have vehicle being loaded for final 16 odd ks.
Cheers
Trevor

After being disappointed by one of those huge hand held spotlights which plug into a car's 12v socket, put out a zillion candlepower (& double as a 'heater'), when a friend recently showed me his relatively tiny & ultra lightweight waterproof LED spotlight I was super impressed. First time out we found a Southern Boobook Owl. Decided I needed one of these in my camping & birding armoury. Charge either with a supplied 240v wall plug or direct from a 12v socket, using a 2nd supplied cable. 3 light levels. On the ultra bright highest setting the lithium battery lasts over 5 hours. There are a few different branded versions of these around. Friend's was 'X-Spot, mine 'No Cry'. Jaycar have a version too that I've seen. Mine is advertised at 1000 lumens, the others 700 lumens. I suspect they are all the same. Makes my fancy Petzl LED rechargeable headtorch look like a candle! Makes those huge 12v plug in spotlights look like cumbersome antiques.

Got mine from Amazon Australia - but when I looked a couple of days after mine arrived (sent from the US & got to me quicker than stuff ordered in Oz) it was listed as not currently available.
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B077TVYMLP/
Whitworths Marine have the X-spot version - but their price is $30 more than I paid & is an older model which can only be recharged via a USB cable, making it less 'flexible'. Same as my friends one.
https://www.whitworths.com.au/x-spot-led-waterproof-rechargeable-spotlight-700-lumens
Jaycar have one which I think may be the same, but shows it's weight as a bit less which makes me wonder if it has a smaller battery fitted. Looks identical other than colour.

This is the item on No Cry's web site. US web site so price shown is in $US.

Like this with the kicker and dimple inserts along with a full fitting kit to be welded by me and a couple of notched tails I can use to weld on and add camberg joiners for scrubbies I have already bent up was $760.
Looks like with the covid restrictions not easing today I might have to get them shipped for another $65.

Nah there isn't. I've just bought the kickass version of the oven and the door is insulated and last latched closed. It has a 130W element instead of a 100W so should get to temp faster.
Roadrunner sell heaps of upgrades for the travel buddy on their website.

Thanks Chris, I saw a youtube about the merits for running your oven at a higher voltage re the heat up time. The presenter did some trials and the best/most efficient voltage was 13.8V, which is achievable when the car is running, but unlikely when simply stopped, but I guess the 10amp current drain is a consideration also. Anyway, i bought a 15amp step up power supply to ensure the oven always has 13.8V - another late night ebay purchase.

Oh crap peebee, I hope they were not the italian Stebel horns. I mounted 2 of these in the factory positions and after going thru a puddle ( seriously, only 4 inches deep) they ceased to HOOOOONK and started to squeek. Like a mouse. They filled up with water. Have this now.Around 40 bucks on ebay, has been going for months now :)
Yeah same. Went through two Stebels, both died of the same squeeking fate.

Well it looks like it's happening. The money we applied to get out of our super was withdrawn today, so should hit our bank account tomorrow or Monday. It is to pay for the OKA camper we are buying. It's all happening at long range & in slow motion. The vehicle is 1800kms from us in Brisbane & for various reasons it will most likely be mid December at the earliest before I can collect it. When I do I'll be driving it south to Taree in NSW hopefully & leaving it there for a chap to remove it's 5 speed Spicer manual gearbox & replace it with a shiny new 6 speed Allison auto to mate to the Cummins 6BT motor. Will probably also get an Allison controlled exhaust brake fitted (requiring stronger valve springs). It'll be a slow job done over several months by a chap who has all the facilities to & know how to do the job, this will be his 4th or 5th one. Very smart chap, with a good handle on what is required, as well as being an OKA owner & runs a machine shop business. Not sure yet whether to keep the 'like new' 'divorce mounted New Process NP205 transfer case , or to change it for a GU Patrol transfer case mounted direct to the rear of the Allison. So drop the OKA off & come back to my wife up north. Depending how long the job takes we may have time to get up the Cape as we had hoped to do this year before driving down to collect it (& MtsTea seeing it in the flesh for the first time) & then continuing back to Vic, where I want to change a few things to the accommodation side of the vehicle to suit us & to upgrade the solar system a bit.
82468 82469 82470
Originally a mine vehicle it was purchased in a fairly sorry state, a runner but otherwise a bit of a wreck.
It has had a lot of work in addition to the ‘house' section being added. Essentially it has been rebuilt from the ground up with all the recognised & desirable mechanical improvements & upgrades for strength & reliability (engine, transmission, suspension, braking etc) OKA owning friends tell me that all the upgrades, with everything replaced with brand new new or fully rebuilt, would have cost at least $100k in parts & labour . This in addition to the general refurbishment beginning with the chassis being completely stripped & repainted with two pak paint & the build completed as a ‘labour of love’ over a 2 or 3 year period with a lot of input & assistance from recognised Melbourne based OKA ‘Guru’ Paul Knot.
GVM 6000kg
Tare 4860kg
Owner reckons in full travel mode with all tanks full it weighs in at around 5900kg. I'll be making a few additions & trying to delete a bit of un-needed weight to compensate.
No major components of the vehicle have done more than 60,000km, many less.
The American import brand new Cummins motor replaced the original Perkins 30,000km ago.
Camper body is fibreglass composite panel over a steel frame.
Included are 360Ah LiFePo4 batteries , 360 watts of solar (to be increased), Redarc battery management system (to be replaced), separate redarc dc to dc charger, a large pure sine wave inverter, Internal kitchen with cooktop & oven, separate upright fridge & chest freezer (both Engel), internal shower & vacuum toilet, internal seating & table, & currently sleeping for four (to be changed for just the two of us). The pop top roof is electrically operated using a ‘Linak’ actuator system. The vehicle is set up for remote travel with long distance fuel capacity, twin spares on swing out mounts & with a manual clip on winch to raise & lower them - apparently they weigh something like 90 kg each!, (37" tyres on 19.5" rims) 3 water tanks, pressurised hot & cold water, electric winch & has a Webasto diesel space heater as well as air conditioning (vehicle & 240v). Air compressor is engine mounted (driven off the camshaft) & has a 20 litre receiver tank) & the vehicle has air bag assisted suspension, adjustable from the driver seat. The OKA’s leaf suspension has been matched to suit the additional weight of the camper body.
All pretty exciting!
We always told ourselves that we would travel with the Tvan until we were fed up of 'roughing it', & then get ourselves another bus or motorhome. After around 3.5 years of travelling with the Patrol & Tvan, we could easily have kept on doing so, but had long ago realised that whatever we replaced it with would have to be able to take us off the beaten track as the Patrol & Tvan has. No luxury blacktop only motorhome for us! We discounted all the upgraded delivery trucks like Canters, Isuzus etc as being too compromised in too many ways to our way of thinking. Mogs & the like are too big & wide for many Australian tracks, which really only left two options. The Iveco Daily 4x4 based expedition vehicles kept tempting us, but their poor reliability record, reliance on computers for everything & high prices discouraged us, & most of OKA's which come up for sale are 'tired' & need more TLC to keep them going than we have available at our age, so we kept coming back to the Patrol, Tvan & outdoor cooking in all weathers ..... until this particular OKA came up for sale. We hope it will prove a good & reliable vehicle, with just basic maintenance required. It is chalk & cheese different to the Iveco, with nothing computerised - all 'old school' mechanical (until the Allison is fitted - but even that has a very useable default limp mode in the event of any failure!) I may not miss the Patrol's uncomfortable seats, nor it's shitty horizontally fitted oil filters, but I will miss everything else about it. I love that car more than any other I've ever owned!

OKA are back up and manufacturing again now (mainly as built to order) and will also "remanufacture" existing OKA's from the "old" company that went belly up.
The current ones are using a 4 cylinder Cummins mated to a 6 speed Allison box, Dana diffs.
GVM of 6.5 ton, 36 inch tyres stock
...but at $150,000 G's for a single cab-chassis there is a lot of competition in that price range

Thanks Nic, Darren, yeah, the old saying 'a poor man pays twice' continues to resound in the garage at times as I have balked at buying the trade quality gear on the basis I won't use it past the immediate task, only to find its still in use 20 yrs down the track and i am still compromising the result or struggling with the execution simply because the stuff in hand is cheap and not up to the task. But on balance also, probably driven by immediate cash all those years ago as well, where as today totally different, just buy the better gear knowing its going to be used well into the future and take the ear bashing when the VISA card bill comes in!!!
What I specifically liked about this set is the adjustable clamp force, as they look like they are designed from a vice grip platform. I must have under-done and cut thru hundreds of electrical connections over the years due to incorrect clamping, hope this will take that score down lower.

Purchased one of these today. My journey with CTEK is about at an end. I find their gear lasts about 2 years then failes. I have gone thru at least 8 chargers so far, and the 5amp unit is running red hot just on a standard maintenance charge on N70 battery, and the 10amp unit is struggling on maintenance with the 400a/hr AGM setup, so will swap the 10amp to the N70, delegate the 5amp to a smaller SLA task and leave the Victron to do the heavy lifting - hope I have got it right - finally.

What I was told by the Australian agent when I had a CTEK 250S battery system expire, was that the electronic componentry has a shelf life, whether its used or not, so if a device is sold by a CTEK agent, it will not be more than 2 yrs old from date of manufacture. There are a lot of CTEK re-sellers out there, but try and get a warranty claim thru if it has not come from a CTEK agent - zero chance. I got caught as the vendor on ebay, who I have bought heaps from , was not a certified CTEK seller. When I delved into the detail with the CTEK Australia rep, my device was over 6 yrs old, yet i had only had it from new for 2 and a bit years. What the actual working life is for this gear was not disclosed. My vehicle batteries sit on maintenance charge year round, as I do a FIFO roster and trips are infrequent. Its a 'new unit' maybe 12 months old, but so hot I could barely pick it up. It was charging, but seemed to be stuck on the bulk charge phase, which really should be over and done in an hour, however sat there all night. Anyway, will see how the Victron gear goes, bigger all round, fingers crossed.
Bugger me, went out to the garage and the 10amp unit is playing up now, gone out on fault. Warm to touch, but not like the 5amp unit. Played around with the mode buttons and its reset itself. Might be the start of the end for that one as well.

The bahco combo ratchet spanners are great for the weight saving. (If you don't already have them). Each spanner has 4 different sizes in. And I believe they come in a set of 5. So you only need to carry 5 spanners for 20 different sizes

Not today but last Friday I bought my first ever brand new car. Yes it's not a Nissan, or even a patrol but I am satisfied that my purchase will see me through for at least the next 7 years. Comes with 7 years unlimited ks warranty, 7 years road side assist and 7 years capped.price servicing at $395 a pop every 15000ks. It is very large and luxurious.pretty much I think the Koreans do make a bloody good car. And no, this one isn't powered by Mercedes, it's all in-house design though that shouldn't be a worry due to the warranty and servicing costs. Oh and did I mention. its a ssangyong musso mate, they re-entered the market in 2018 and are trying to knuckle into the suv market. personally i dont think their cars are as ugly as the 90s models so yeah. the musso is simply a ssangyong rexton, with an extended chassis, extended wheelbase and the boot cut off and replaced with a tub. so it has all the luxuries of a prado sized suv with the practicalness of a ute. cannot complain about that!
oh and the badge is that wierd wing thing in the middle of the grill =P

Strongly recommend you get a fluid damper instead of the factory 3 part rubber balancer. They are a big improvement and helps with reducing risk of crank failure which is an issue with these motors. Is that a new crate motor? From BD?

Don't know how it compares, but Hema just released an update for their 4wd app which includes a number of new maps, including 8 maps covering the Vic High Country with most, if not all tracks named. Pic is a screenshot of part of one map, from my phone.

I think the thing with rooftops is all the little bits of info and the reliability of it too. There's so much stuff I've found in the bush that would have never if known about, huts, waterfalls mines etc, plus info on track conditions is pretty bang on. .

I recall reading an article in a 4wd magazine many years ago, and it showed an amazing stretch of water with a huge deep fishing hole. I tried to find the location on the maps based on the description in the article. I ended up making contact with the old guy who does the rooftop maps and he was really helpful. I told him the story, gave him the description and approx location - somewhere close to Bindaree Hut from memory. I then rang him back next day and he had gone thru his trek notes and photos and confirmed 100% the spot was not near the hut as noted. He physically walked every track himself in those day, so he knows the content back to front. In the end I never found the fishing spot - may have been deliberately disguised in the article to protect its exclusivity.

Yep fair enough , the Rooftop maps do definitely look better. However the new Hema map set for the high country might come a reasonable second best. At the scale in Winnies screen shot Rooftop has more info & is clearer than Hema. With Hema you would need to switch between two zoom levels to see the contours & all the track names. Less 'points of interest on the Hema too.

Being that the new Musso is new in Australia, aftermarket options are very limited. Also, mostly they are crap. I have resorted to looking for universal solutions. Some that know me know I do alot of timber work which means transporting long lengths. This is the start of my working out a longer vehicle rack. I'll be adding a tray to the frame, but not until I find roof racks that aren't clamp mount type. At this time the only type in Australia that are available are clamp mount and I think that design is absolutely puss. Anyway, happy with the frame, the build quality is great, it's solid as a rock and will suit my need perfectly. Oh and I reckon it was a good price. $699 including shipping.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/108.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/109.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/04/110.jpg

Depending on your roof style clamps might be the only option. Some models do have the rails bolt onto them that run front to back but if they arent there fron factory then it won't leave any other option. Some rack manufacturers will instruct you to remove the roof liner and drill holes but this isn't great either.

I may or may not have bought/scored a UFI 18g upgrade kit for the GU.
Some family associates bought GU with a bunch of included un-fitted goodies (someones abandoned project?). One of them being a new 18G kit. They have no intentions of fitting it, so a kind trade offer was made I would've been stupid to pass on. After consulting some experts (Thanks Mat), this seems to be a good bit of kit.
It's weeks away from being in my hands. And then after checking things over, I'll have to work out fitting etc... So maybe a while away still but I'm pumped!!!

I'll be watching with genuine interest. I'm curious to see how upgrading a turbo (and possibly intercooler) will change things if retaining the factory fuel pump.
Your pump is still the factory unit, right?

Yeah mate. I still have the factory pump. Which I believe is 11mm ?? Someone correct me here.
I have the big Cross Country intercooler and a 3" exhaust. So a good portion of making the TD42 sing better is already done. As for the turbo, well, I quote nissannewby here, anything is better than the HT18. lol
Also the last tune the GU had at Dieseltec in Lilydale, Andy there said the turbo was my big bottleneck as the HT18 is way up at it's limit.
So, with all the upgrades I've done thus far, how much effect the 18G will have, without also doing the pump???? *shrug*
Cremulator
17th April 2021, 01:51 PM
Interesting. I also have a 3in exhaust with factory turbo, intercooler and fuel pump.
Andy at DieselTec also tuned mine to run better as the previous owner had dialled up the fuel but not the boost.
Mine is currently 98kw and 369nm at 12psi with the factory turbo but is running better fuel economy.
It sounds like your setup will test all the elements that I am wanting to upgrade while still testing the limits of the factory fuel pump.
