They are a great welder for rhs not quite big enough to run 3.2 rods, I swapped mine for a trans arc 240/415v model
But big enough to weld most light jobs, now I use neither and use my inverter boy can that push a 3,2 rod and its not that
big but very light

On the VW modification side, a friend was involved with fitting the throttle body injection from a 1.8 Camira (Pulsar would be the same and would make it a little bit Nissan) onto beach buggy. Machined down the distributor to fit, bolt on the throttle body and some sensors (I think they use oil temp instead of coolant temp), lots of power & better economy. They found the ECU from an automatic was better than the one from a manual.

Cost me $1400 so its a heap of $$ just sitting doing nothing.
Now BOC have a fair price for gas, I do like using it though
I must admit, no chipping slag of wire brushing welds

This style easy out arrived, hopefully Ill never need them

We had 12 year old Wertheim bag vacuum cleaner. This thing would pull jesus from his cross it was that powerful. It cost us $1200 12 years ago to buy. The powerhead on it had its own motor. Bloody thing was awesome.
Then the missus won a new Bosch bagless vac, pet vac or something it was called. Retailed for about 7hunge... She wanted the new vac, so we sold the Wertheim on eBay and it was the biggest mistake ever. Wouldn't even pull the skin of a rice pudding, the power head relies on suction from the vac to work, stupid idea, and being bagless, the filter gets clogged everytime you use it and it loses suction very quickly.
The powerhead, or the powerless head i call it, broke not long ago and we had to stuff around to get a new head for it.
Should never have sold the Wertheim.

Yes mate, our old one was a 7.5kg, missus pretty much had a load on every day, what with the 2 girls school uniforms, normal clothes, mine and my missus work clothes and the 3 year old boy. 8.5kg isnt much of a jump up in size but I would hope that the am I of loads should decrease a little. Plus the machine should be a bit more efficient with power and water use.

Wanted to get a 10kg jobbie but time was of the essence (lots of washing building up) and basically got what we could afford, what space we had available and what they had in stock. It arrived today and have just installed it and pretty impressed with how quiet it is.

The dishwasher has packed in now, so am on the hunt for a heater element for it.

Tumble dryer is on the way out too :(

Spent a few hundred on oils for the GU yesterday at Repco (they have 30% off this weekend if you have an RACV card). But more importantly, I bought a roll of yellow hand towels from there. They're the best bloody hand towels I've ever used! They're actually absorbent, even for oil, which is more than I can say for 99% of the ones I've tried in the past. Great buy.

Going to go back today and buy a recovery kit, as I sold all of my gear before moving to NZ a few years ago, and haven't reacquired it all since moving back. Their recovery kits with snatch block, snatch strap, winch extension, tree trunk protector, equalisation strap and a couple of bow shackles seem like reasonable value.

Do you think a tank would help that much for inflating tyres?

BigRAWesty
5th March 2016, 09:04 AM
Do you think a tank would help that much for inflating tyres?
Well if you flick it on before you get to your air up destination then yea it'll help. You'll have 'x' L capacity at 110 psi so depending on your capacity you may get a tyre pumped up before the compressor kicks in again.. so it's had time to cool again and is more efficient for the others..

Winnie
5th March 2016, 09:41 AM
Would there be enough air in a tank to inflate a tyre? It wouldn't stay at 110 PSI though, as soon as some air is released then the pressure starts to drop yeah?

Yeah it does. Most tanks that are able to be fitted to a 4wd would be lucky to fill one tyre. But as it has been said if the pump is struggling after 3 then it will make its life a little easier come air up time.

Yea it does.. but we only inflate to 38-40psi..
So by having a reserve of air at a higher pressure you've got an advantage.

It is swings and roundabouts... there is no exact answer as there are too many variables such as tank volume, tyre size, road pressures etc

No tank means the Air Compressor is starting to pump at, say 18 PSI so high flow and finishes at, say 36 PSI so med flow and lower overall load.
With tank means the Air Compressor is trying to pump the tank up to say 115 PSI which means low flow and higher load from 36 PSI upwards.
If the tank drops to say 30 PSI during inflation now the Air Comp is trying to 'inflate' the tyre and the tank so needs even more volume.
Yes, that 'extra' air goes into the next tyre but it was generated at a higher efficiency cost

A tank is at it's best advantage as an accumulator for higher volume use such as air tools etc where the tank is high pressure and the offtake is regulated low pressure.
Also great for air horns, lockers or a quick top up say from 12 back to 16 just using teh accumulated volumes

and they are from sca after all:p

I use the rough & ready 70% calculation to estimate a panel’s output when mounted flat or close to.

Wattage of panel divided by nominal voltage & multiplied by 70%.

In this instance 150/12 = 12.5 12.5 x70% = 8.75A ..... so I’d agree with MT’s estimate of 8.5amps.

However - brand new panels often perform over spec & ‘settle down to more conservative figures after a little regular use. In addition a bright but cool day, particularly if close to large bodies of water (reflection) can also push output above specs. These are the exception rather than the rule though. It is also possible that this new solar blanket has a higher efficiency that
most panels available, but I too wouldn’t expect that from SCA products.

So Lucas, when, a bit further down the track, your panel’s output is more like MT expected - don’t be disappointed - it’s normal. :)

Clamp Meters will often give some 'unusual' readings on low current DC.

Budget for a max of 8 amps and you won't be dissapointed

It's not the meter itself, it's the method.
For the induction pick up to be accurate the conductor has to be centred and parallel.
That's why industrial hall effect transducers in fixed plant applications are usually sized to be snug on the cable.

Doesn't matter all that much tho, you get a 'feel' for the gear after a while.

I'm a bit put off mtz I only got <75,000 out of my last set, I know there is some new compound in the p3 but they have not been out long enough to know how many k's I don't think

Had the previous MTZ, only put them on for 4x4 weekend trips so definitely wouldn't have got good K's from them. Liked the grip they gave though.

Have an unused MTZ spare so bought same again

May have been 120 kg..
Was in a but a hurry with the 2 little ones going a bit nuts in the shop..
But still 120kg is more than the roofs capacity by a long way..
So needed
2 of RL110S5 (110MM high legs)
2 of VA137B B (vortex roof bars in black)
And 2 of VA-FK1 B (adaptor kit as the mounts are made for the old bars and the vortex bars have a different mount)

Sale was weekend only I think but I think the bars were on sale this week too..

Spent most of the morning under the troll looking for a lost earth. Found a broken wire in the rear bumper loom. Now have the rear lights working independently of each other again. It was more interesting before though, you just had to know the code. RH brake flashing means turning right. RH brake and indicator hard on means braking. RH indicator and brake half on means park lights are on and so it goes, Anyway all fixed now so I can go away at Easter and brake it again. (pun intended).

Autobarn have a special on Fuelsafe (Rheem) jerry cans at the moment. Around half price at $33 each for the yellow diesel or red petrol cans. Don't believe their online 'Click & collect' when it tells you that they don't have any, apparently it's having hissy fits at the moment. I phoned the shop who said 'yep' we've got plenty in stock - so I bought four.

Small mod to my car, I made a couple of parallel bars to fit across the inside rear of the pod to which I can securely strap the 4 jerries. These plus another two stored further forward gives a total fuel capacity of up to 300 litres if needed. (Plus another 60 litres carried on the Tvan).

You can only travel on gazetted roads in Australia and the chance of anyone other
than being the Bush tucker man you'll never get permission to travel to these out of the way places [remote]..
So a 150-200ltr main replacement and a 75 ltr aux tank will suit your needs . If doing the CSR
you only need enough fuel to reach well 23 if Im right.
From what I see is you're down sizing and trying to fit everything you had in the bus into
your Pod and camper.. Sorry I dont see the point way too heavy. Raffa had the right idea
and he only had half the gear you have. Take if for some serious off road sojourn a few times

Fark.. so what's your cruzing range now at 300L? ?

Most of the time the jerries would not be used but need to be carried as we plan to be away indefinitely, as opposed to ‘doing’ a CSR trip (for example) & returning home.

As yet I cannot be certain what fuel consumption will be in dune country, but on the road it is higher than many others get. The wind resistance of the pod makes a significant difference.

I worked out my safety margins on 20litres per 100kms +25% for remote desert travel - i.e. 25l per 100kms. (a range of 1200kms for 300 litres) This would (I hope) be a worst case scenario.

In the past with the RTT fitted & carrying a fair amount of weight, consumption was between 17.5 litres per 100kms & 19 litres per 100kms.

Recently however I achieved an all time best of 14.6 litres per 100kms - at that rate 300 litres would give a range of around 2000kms which plainly is severe overkill.

However knock off 25% for desert/dune travel - down to around 1500kms. Knock off a bit more for the extra weight of fulltime touring & towing & it could be getting closer to the required 1200 km range (needed for the Canning).

I certainly have no intention of carrying any more fuel than I have to, but did need to know that I could carry sufficient for any scenario.

I’m not a believer in carrying extra fuel just to be able to buy it for a few cents cheaper, a strategy I view as a false economy.

threedogs
1st April 2016, 03:05 PM
Not having a dig but you need to do a fair bit of home work to figure out all your fuel figures.
Its not all worked out on a calculator you need to get some real world figures, Go down see Craig
and get some fuel figures in the Dunes down his way, bit of sand driving practise as well, Fully loaded
Would it be a good idea to glue some carpet or such along the RHS to protect it rubbing on the new jerry's

My experience is different. Apart from one plastic jerry crazing & cracking (didn’t leak) after about 15 years, I’ve never had any problem with them. On the other hand I had no end of problems with metal jerries either splitting or leaking past the rubber seal.

You can indeed get fuel delivered in a 200l drum to well 23.(Georgia Bore). However it’s a choice I prefer to avoid for several reasons. You have to buy the full 200 litres, need to organise it months in advance, a far higher chance of getting dirty or water laden fuel from a drum, having to carry a pump suitable for getting the fuel out of the drum & I have read of several instances of folk arriving at well 23 only to find that the drum of fuel they organised some 2 months earlier is not there.

Plenty of folk carry sufficient fuel to get them to well 33 (Kunawaritji) where they can fill up from a bowser. Ths requires a fuel range of around 1180kms.

You suggest 275 litres in a main & aux tank would suit my needs, & I hope that amount of fuel WILL be sufficient. It’s only 25kg less in weight than what I can now carry IF I NEED TO.

I believe you significantly underestimate me. I’m not silly, I understand that weight is the enemy, but also understand that a comparison to Rafa or indeed most others is not a reasonable one to make. The major difference, as I have mentioned before, is that we will be travelling with no time limit, no schedule & that this will allow us to travel far more slowly than most, which in turn puts far less stress & strain on the vehicle. So whilst my vehicle is heavier than some (although still not as heavy as some who do in weeks what we will take months or years to do) our travelling/driving style will go quite some way to mitigate that.

With two identical vehicles, both travelling the same desert tracks, one loaded to 3.4 tonnes & travelling at average of 80+kph, & one loaded to 3.8 tonnes & travelling at average of 50kph, which one do you think is most likely to sustain damage?

CSR in my Patrol, worst was 20.5 litres per 100 klm, so Cuppa if you even if you are towing you wont need fuel at #23 from Newman. Keep in mind Newman sell it in 205 litre drum full lots so if you can not take it on board you leave it even though you paid for it!
My share was 66 litres which I gave to another bloke with contaminated fuel storage in his vehicle. My 85 sub, 95 main plus 5 Jerry's with 22 litres in each was plenty for my vehicle which is similar to yours.
Fastest speed on the CSR was 54 kph, so wind resistance is not such an issue.
The sand parts were simple as we have discussed on the phone.
Those who have not been there have an opinion, but thats all it is, what you have to do is be happy with what you have.
What you have is correct, it's not overkill because things can change, you drive or camp differently etc etc all have an impact on fuel used.
Plus its better to look at it than look for it!

That is good advice, part of our plan is most certainly to do some shorter trips in desert country before attempting a route like the Canning. I am quite confident that we will have more accurate (real world) consumption figures before we ever decide to travel ‘capacity critical’ routes like the Canning. Anything less would be foolish. But for now I am just wanting to ensure I have the space for a worst case scenario. If I don’t have to utilise all the space I’m allocating to carrying fuel I’ll be happy, but if I didn’t have sufficient space & it meant I couldn’t go where I wanted to I’d be pretty cheesed off. Carpet (or rubber) is a good idea.

Thanks Macca,
Based upon what you’ve told me, what I’ve read & the fact that we’ll be a bit heavier than you were I feel that I’m ‘in the ball park’. 1 more jerry than you had.
