Therefore, be ye lamps unto yourselves, be a refuge to yourselves. Hold fast to Truth as a lamp; hold fast to the truth as a refuge. Look not for a refuge in anyone beside yourselves. Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

When a person who normally charges $100 for their services gives you a pro-bono session, what you are getting is a service that is more expensive than their going rate.
It’s not because they are losing out on $100. Money can be supplemented.
What they are losing is time. Time they could spend on their work. On higher paying clients. Time having sex. Or sleeping. Or eating a really delicious meal somewhere.
Anything else but doing something for you, for nothing.
If you cannot see the real cost of someone doing a favor for you, it’s probably cheaper to pay them the $100.00.
(On the flip side, if you are constantly giving away services you normally charge for, you might want to reconsider what you value.)

“Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them – Work, Family, Health, Friends and Spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the air.
You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – Family, Health, Friends and Spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for it.
Work efficiently during office hours and leave on time. Give the required time to your family, friends and have proper rest. Value has a value only if its value is valued.”

Under the age of 40? You won't understand.)
My mum used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleachbut we didn't get food poisoning.
school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. Coli. Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake or at the beach instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
We all took PE ..... and risked permanent injury with a pair of Dunlop sandshoes instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.
We got the cane for doing something wrong at school, they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules and to honour & respect those older than us.
We had 50 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do maths and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter......., FUNNY THAT!!
We all said prayers in school irrespective of our religion, sang the national anthem and no one got upset.Staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention we wish we hadn’t got.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. We weren't!! Oh yeah ... And where was the antibiotics and sterilisation kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!
We played “King of the Hill” on piles of gravel left on vacant building sites and when we got hurt, mum pulled out the 2/6pence bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked.
Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mum calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?We never needed to get into group therapy and/or anger management classes.
We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!
How did we ever survive?
The person who sent this to me didn’t mention Grandma who sugared the dummies when they dropped on the floor and before she put it back in the wailing mouth; nor the brandy she put in the bottle of milk to stop the baby crying; nor the alternate licking of the ice cream by the toddler and the dog; nor the food served up cold and stale until you ate it; nor having to leave the table if you spoke out of turn or attempting to leave the table without permission; or sitting down to a meal without washing face, hands and doing your hair. Certainly one wouldn’t dream of answering one’s parent back even if they were wrong….that would be a clear demonstration of disrespect particularly in your parent’s home which they allowed you to share. This, incidentally, is from the land of Australia the socalled unsophisticated country.

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA.
AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T, SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED.
life's most simple pleasures are very often the best.
What about riding your bikes through derelict quarries, chasing rabbits and snakes through the local creek, painting a cricket pitch and a tennis court on the road of the court you lived in, climbing all over the cricket practice nets at the local park, spending half a day playing hide and seek in Kmart when it first opened its doors locally, building a BMX track in the empty block in the next street, catching a bus to get to the beach, having a V8 on your p's, when ICE used to be what was in your drink, getting 30 of your mates together for a BBQ and game of soccer at a park for your birthday, when you had to build a car up and not just buy it.

“Each Christmas I remember
The ones of long ago;

With stockings in a row.

Of days that used to be,
When we hid presents here and there,
For all the family.
Each Christmas I remember

And cookies everywhere.

For Christmases now past,

There was a young boy who drove and Land Cruiser
All the other kids used to call him a Loser
He used to go on that he didn't know why
He just thought they must have been high
Until one day out in the bush
He was stuck in a hole, and needed a push
Then over the horizon, he saw and outline
He saw that distinctive shape, of glimmer and shine
As it got closerhe then realised
It was a Nissan Patrol before his very eyes
He wanted it then, He wanted it there
He asked him for swaps
but the guy just looked and threw his hands in the air
So he saved his money, as much as he could
Then went and bought a Patrol, just like he said he would
Now the other kids dont call him loser
As he no longer drives a Land Cruiser

In the middle of the night, Holmes nudges Watson awake, and says, "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."
"I see millions of stars, my dear Holmes."
"And what do you infer from these stars?"
"Well, a number of things," he says, lighting his pipe:
Astronomically, I observe that there are millions of galaxies and billions of stars and planets.
Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo.
Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three.
Meteorologically, I expect that the weather will be fine and clear.
Theologically, I see that God is all-powerful, and man, his creation, small and insignificant.

Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.

For example, if only the people you give money to love you, you are a rather pathetic person who has to “buy” friendship. On the other hand, if you are loved by many people whom others also love and respect, then you are likely a great person who is worthy of admiration.

Absence diminishes mediocre passions and increases great ones, as the wind extinguishes candles and fans fires.
- FRANÇOIS DE LA ROCHEFOUCAULD
Interpretation: You have probably heard the saying, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder,” in regards to love. This quote presents an extension of that idea. It means that while the absence of a much-loved person or passion (say, playing the violin indeed makes you realize how much you really love that person or thing, absence actually makes you forget about people and pursuits that you don’t feel strongly about. This perfectly fits the metaphor of wind blowing out small flames (candles) but increasing large ones (fires).
