GQY60 Left headlight, short to ground

As title... my left hand headlight has a short to ground -somewhere-

Obviously I'll get in there and find it, but if anyone knows if there's a common failure point on this? Somewhere the wires bend, rub, vibrate through?

It can often be the plug, they are prone to melting and also a cause of voltage drop from high resistance meaning a dim headlight (even dimmer than the shitty normal output).

Replacing the factory crap setup with an aftermarket loom and relays can often give a huge improvement in lighting and also fix any gremlins.

I'd upgraded the bulbs to Narva +100s, a definite step up from factory, but yeah...probably not silly to upgrade the lot. I assume we just take relay triggers from the RH headlight?
Or I could fit HIDs or even LEDs (we aren't blessed with ADR over here ) Only... I never need that much illumination.

Anyone got any comments on either of those options?

Right, well. Couple hundo worth of parts (New H4 plugs, fuse/distribution block, relays, relay bases, a meter less wire than I needed, crimps &c) and I realise I'm short two relays. But I do have high and low on both sides now, so it's drive on!

The spaghetti is in. My phone camera is shit.

The other things on the fuse block are stebel horn and electric diesel lift pump. And I did tidy bundle the wiring some, even though I'm'a have to go and re-do some of it again.

You realise the headlights in a GQ are earth switched.
That means the "normal" earth lead runs 12v power through the fuses, and the leads for low beam and high beam are earths through the column switch

No. And that doesn't make much sense to me. I'll read it a few more times to let it soak in a bit...

I did look at the diagram in the haynes, for all the good it did me. I'll look again, I think High beam on the left grounded out through a "dip/dim" module (shown as seperate on the diagram, but could mean the same thing as the column lever...) but the right grounded directly through the switch/lever. Pretty sure It did show a permanent ground and that it was switching hot...

But What I do know is that of the 3 pins on the H4 lamps, one is earth, one is hot on 'on' and one is hot on 'high'.
With this in mind I used these as relay triggers.
