I haven't cleaned anything. The first pic is the bores and the 2nd pic is the head.

Sorry I see what you mean now. In the last pic of the piston in the bore I had pushed it down and the flash on the camera made it look cleaner.

Hopefully Matty can shimmer in but your burn marks to me look good but no idea on the soot on number 2. It was number 2 that went yeah?

And the rust on the liner above the rings.

It must have been exhaust gases pushing the coolant out of the overflow, but there was definitely no bubbles in the radiator.
