I did that when I was a kid.
I made a pair of glasses out of a coat hanger for my four eyed cousin.

The bottom of the vent ducting was designed by an evil bastard, so don't go dropping the cap further down. I had to remove the middle section of the dash surround to access the ducting. The heater core has a well of sorts that catches sand, dust and anything else, so you have to get the camera and attached tool up around and back down a bit. I taped the camera to the small diameter bit of hose and vacuumed all the crap out, then hooked the afore-mentioned ring out.

I have a feeling it's bit too late for that.
If I can't fish it out, I'm gonna have to leave the bastard as it is.
Hopefully it won't rattle like hell.

Get a piece of plastic tube, a balloon (helium type have thicker walls. Push tube into balloon until it touches end and duct tape to seal.
Slide down vent till past the object, inflate balloon and slowly pull tube and balloon out.
