    Leaking Rear Windscreen Washer

Have you ever noticed that when you park with the front higher than the back water leaks or dribbles out the rear window washer onto the back door then onto the ground, and it only stops when you run out of water?

Mine was leaking and I followed all the "cheap" tips on the internet without success. For every reported success there's also someone where it didn't work. They all centre around using commonly available check valve from pet shops, designed for fish tanks (about $5). The genuine part from Nissan is about $35, yes I'm serious. Other popular suppliers on the forums can get them a bit cheaper. A lot have just blocked it off.

What causes the problem? There's a check valve in the large rear door that stops working, probably from the buildup of calcium in the water. Mine is a 2005 GU4 and the check valve is in the middle of the large rear door, earlier models can have it located in the quarter panel above the jack. They actually aren't a check valve, they are pressure relief value. Their job is to stop water flow in both directions so it doesn't siphone from the tank out onto the ground and also stops the water in the line returning back to the tank, so when you press the washer you don't get a lag until the water comes through and you're wiping a dry window. When you do press the washer the pressure from the washer pump pushes the little pressure relief valve open and the water flows from the tank to the wiper no problems.

For the record these did NOT work on my car.

So I went up to my local AutoOne outlet and bought a generic valve for the windscreen washer system. They called it a check valve, I just went with it. It cost $3.95. This is it, the little black thing. The green and white thing is the buggered Nissan one that came out of my door.

Put it in and works perfect.

Bit of contact from the kids school books to seal up the plastic on the door and all fixed.

I would never have found it if it wasn't for the help of this forum, hope it helps somebody else.

I bought a washer check valve from bursons to fix mine, looked pretty much the same as the factory one, was working great until Saturday's toolangi trip when it was noticed to be leaking again. I'll try a blow out and see if it is something stuck in it otherwise I'll try and source a cheapish genuine or another generic one.
