i have now browsed and skimmed through this thread and found it very interesting and opinions entertaining so now for me to throw my worthless 2 cents in.
this is my second time around with gun ownership and hunting my last collection was handed in during the 90's with the buy back amnesty i wont go into what i hate on here as there was way to much contraband.
so to what own now i have 3 rifles at the moment
Stephens .22 with scope
Stephens .243 with vortex scope 3x9x40
Howa .308 with vortex scope 3x9x40
both my daughter an I shoot she goes to the range with me but as yet has not gone hunting her rifles are the .22 and the .243 she loves her .22 on the range and i got the .243 for her so when she decides to come hunting she will have a light weight rifle with enough knocking power to take anything to a small deer. they may be hers but i also use them when i go out.
As for my preference i love my .308 its a good solid all round utility round with enough thump to knock everything we have to hunt in this country i use federal ballistic rounds in both the .243 and the .308 the trip i did down south with Macca is the first time i got to use the ballistics on a large animal when i knocked a feral cow with a neck shot to the spine just behind the head she was dead before she hit the ground damage was extensive with a small pin hole for the entry and the exit wound was almost as round as coke can. lot to be said for fast expansion projectiles
the should be in order the rifles a group pigs that gave me the run around over Xmas on the farm and down at the range
