feel a bit stupit mate but whats a torque lock up ands what the advantage to having then i am new to al this

There is a particular technique you need to master when driving downhill in an auto and that is "driving through the brakes" it is a technique you should have learned on your courses. Master it. As there is really no need for the torque lock up mod if you know how to execute that driving skill properly.
That said, if I owned an auto I would consider the mod but its not really necessary and I'd be doing other things first..

if it is running away from you that little bit to fast put the AC on, it will labour the motor that little bit more, be sure it is in 4L 1st gear down hill & do as Dreyboyaus says, feather the brake meaning gently touch the brake to slow it down that fraction more again if required, best thing to do is join a club as they will put you through your paces & set you straight, dont always listen to mates unless they are very experienced because you can learn some bad habits, never have ur thumbs inside the steering wheel, they will snap like a pencil, just some hints

The technique I refer to is where you apply just enough brake to hold you on the hill.....(and yes, you should be in 4 low 1st) and at the same time apply enough accelerator to slowly move you down the hill. You actually "drive" down the hill rather than idle.
It should work such that when you stop accelerating the brake holds you on the hill. It requires the application of the brake and accelerator at the same time.
It needs to be taught properly and practiced regularly.......
In slippery stuff downhill try not to touch the brakes, use the above technique and if you start tobogganing then you give the gas a bit of a stab to get your wheels turning again.
Best bet though is to do some training through a 4x4 club, they'll sort you out.

thanks very much mate that link explains it very well i did two 4x4 driving courses both in landcruisers with manual gear boxes just need to find a nice steep hill to practice on have learened a lot from the forum in the last few days thanks again
