As mentioned in your intro, get out with a mate following, if your suspecting wheel spin you have got eyes to check.
It may just be the auto slipping giving it a false feeling..

Welcome mate! Autos are easier to drive off road......better? Dunno, I have a manual and am happy with that but is just as happily drive an auto.
As clunk suggested make sure you're in 4wd an if its muddy, every chance you're spinning them up. No real harm done IMO 'cause you've gotta do that if you're driving muddy rutted stuff anyway.....all part if the fun!
I didn't check to see where you were but if you joined a local 4x4 club, you and the wife would get some driver training to make the most of your new beast, they'll go on some really fun trips am you get to meet another lot of fun folks.

Autos are great off road especially up hill, down hill not so good.
In mud if your spinning and moving forward keep them spinning
turn steering side to side for extra traction as well, keep an eye on the tacho
to monitor revs , Momentum is your friend in mud. The best thing you and your
partner can do is enroll and do an Offroad driving course, as your partner will need how to drive is god forbid
anything happens to you, contact your state 4wd body or club about courses and pricing

Hi mate and welcome to the forum. Personally drive a manual but as TD has mentioned they both have their pros and cons.

Hello from Under Down Under!
There is a thread on here somewhere about installing a Torque Converter Lock to your auto. Looks really simple and I'm installing one on mine. Search and you will find, heaps of info on the forum.
