Thanks for all the info, most appreciated. It is the internal compressor bearings - booked in with the mechanic on Friday.

$900 for the internal bearing sounds way too dear. I would've imagined you can get a brand new compressor for that price.
Then you still have to get the system flushed, lubricated and regassed at an A/C shop.
