    Howdy

Hello all, hopefully the title grabbed some attention.
Yes it did mate, do not use foul language here again

Bit about myself: I'm Texan and living in Aus. In Nelson Bay just north of Newcastle, anyone else around? I still haven't checked out the other forums of where some folks are located. Been here for three years now, been on a couple motorcycles for most of my time here so far. I started off in an MK triton which was a terrible choice of course, hindsight being 20/20.

I picked up a 99 rd28 yesterday in Canberra, rode the bike down and then trailered back home. Haven't taken a spontaneous trip like that in a few years, everything went mostly well. I know these engines are quite sluggish, mine is impressively gutless. I bought it as a project of course, I'll start building a maintenance list today or tomorrow as I should be getting straight into the tinkering. First job up is replacing the power steering belt, hopefully the pump is still good🤞 anyways, I'll leave the rest of that for another forum.

This is my first patrol, I've looked at a few others but haven't pulled the trigger on one until yesterday. Been real cautious about getting into another forby after owning that triton 👎 very keen on this one at the moment, just want to do a few things to it before I put it up for sale and maybe work my way up to a Ti model, or at least just one with a sunroof. One day I would like to swap another straight six into a GQ or GU. I've got a few ideas already, but time will tell what I follow through with.

This is the start to my 25 posts to one of those golden manuals, it doesn't look like many other people read through and noticed that requirement for access to the manuals. I almost 🤏 jumped the line myself and got straight into asking for them. Just a bit of transparency here.

Hopefully the site is quite active, I haven't been into reading forums in about ten years when I was going through high school and had my head stuck into welding. I'm looking forward to finding and learning more knowledge on this site than what any other search engine will give me.

    Cheers folks

I dont think the 25 posts is still a requirement.

This is a family orientated forum so your opening title is inappropriate to be honest - surprised it has not been redacted as yet.

There is a lot of information across the various pages, and usually requests are responded to fairly quickly. There will be a lot of info on the GU RD28 as a package. I had that engine in a GQ, then did an engine swap. Difference was the GU has the electronic control and the GQ straight mechanical. I found the RD28 a motor that liked to rev, but was lacking in torque. I never experienced the dreaded head gasket blow due to heat, but am sure I dodged a bullet. I added a Marks 85% gear reduction to the transfer case and transformed it off the road in hilly country, however the gap between high and low range then became too great and effectively crippled it in sand - compromises all have their strengths and weaknesses.
Lastly welcome to the forum and reach out when required.

Welcome to the forum. A few things to keep an eye on the RD28. https://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/foru...hings-to-check

My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Are they in the forum section, or in the manuals section up top? The manuals link doesn't have any active links for me to download or even open any of the manuals. Are there any websites or companies that provide good support for the rd, other than patrolapart? They of course have heaps of support for the patrols, but still don't seem very supportive on the engine side. I'm not sure I'll go mechanical, at least it isnt a priority in the foreseeable future. I agree on the revs, it seemed to favor 2800-3400 on the trip home with a box trailer attached and noticably better after dropping the trailer off.

Mudhut, thanks for the link, I'm already building a parts list and check list in reference to that thread. I believe I might have to chase out some air in the cooling system after reading that article, and I'll have to look into the fuel pump issue. Mine was having issues starting after I stopped to fuel up on the trip home, however I had zero issues starting up when cold and it would fire up rather quickly IMO. The second fuel stop took three or four tries before it switched on.

Definitely got a bit of work ahead, considering it being a twenty seven year old truck.

Thanks for that PeeBee, I'm still sorting out how to get it downloaded. Keeps coming through as corrupted, which I believe is on my end. Will be accessing it soon enough.

EDIT: Manual has been downloaded, I'm off to the races
