I had the RD28 in my GQ Wagon for 15yrs, its a high revving motor with poor torque at low speed. I have stalled in a number of places at times, but you just need to drive it differently, especially if heavily loaded. I installed Marks 4X4 85% reduction gears and transforms it in the Vic High Country, but killed it for sand driving unfortunately. The combination of small motor and heavy loads results in high fuel consumption. I have run my motor so hot in the middle of summer it would barely idle, but come good within minutes once it cooled down. I never suffered the dreaded head gasket failure, but did look after it like a baby re servicing. When I bought it new, empty it flew, then I started adding weight and from there it became a chore to drive. I swapped the engine out for a Chev diesel conversion at 90,000 and its been a nightmare to get that sorted for 5 yrs, but finally its running like it should. Depends on budget and what you want to do with it. If I had my time again I would go the TD42 route, but the RD28 took across the Simpson and up to the Kimberley and dozens of High Country Trips, drowned it once half way up the windscreen, still lived. If you can find a low Kilometer one that suits the budget, its a good platform. Minimal electronics as well. I did find adding an intercooler improved the torque band as well.
