Mt Selma Trig Point campsite - snow camping

Spent 3 days and nights at the Mt Selma Trig Point marker, 2wd access on good roads, about 1.5hrs east of Matlock in Vic high country. We arrived via Warburton/Reefton and then turned right at Cumberland junction and headed to Matlock and beyond. No one about as we did a monday-thursday trip.
Weather was horrendous, we expected high winds for a short period however put up with 70-90klm/hr winds the entire time, minus 5 temps, sleet on one day and followed by snow so hard you could not get near the fire. The trig point is at 1460m, and is very exposed to the elements - its not a winter wonderland location and certainly young kids may be a handful up there. Couple of pics. Am heading back up that way mid Aug at this time, no doubt access will have changed from easy 2wd to challenging 4WD with the snow depths expected.Mt Selma 1.jpgMt Selma 2.jpgMt Selma 3.jpgmt Selma 5.jpgMt Selma 6.jpgMt Selma 7.jpgMt Selma 8.jpgMt Selma 9.jpg

I think you just need to have the right gear, however once you get wet, its more difficult. We dont live in this environment constantly like say those in the northern hemisphere, so its a bit of a novelty with minimal risk based on how close support services are away. Lastly my perspective is you can always put on more clothes in the cold, if you have them, but the opposite in the heat!

Ha ha. I think with the wind chill at Corop, you did experience a little of that cold.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Honestly, I was ready to come home at day 3, very uncomfortable, but still had a bottle of Backwoods to moderate my decision, so I reluctantly stayed - it snowed all day and night, blew a gale and then cleared up to magnificent. Looking at your trip photos I agree we probably got the other side of the weather pattern.
