The high speed camera sure reveals some detail and destroys the myth as well. I have a couple of the simple slip over dampers - the first style and will have to rethink if i continue to use them or modify them in some way to stop the strap simply sliding thru. I must admit I have never used a blanket on a snatch strap, only winching - unsure if I have seen anyone else do that either?

Back in the day, we did a few experiments with blankets, bags and all sorts of stuff. We found the only thing that killed a strap with a SHACKLE attached was a Tow chain, no,no not one chain but two ,each chain being placed at around a third of the straps lenght. The chains weight and its ability not to get ripped apart gave it total control over the strap and shackle. This also worked well on winch ropes.
We have it all on video tape some where ,might have to find it .
