Yeah. The shoe actually came away from the backing, locking up the rear wheel. He was really lucky to pull the old girl up.

If it smells like gear oil then, yes. The axle seal will need replacing and it is a bit of a job to do. If it is just a bit of grease, then that may indicate too much grease has been used.
