Mudski is right. I tried a chinese stainless manifold and was total rubbish. Ended up with DTS cast Iron and even though was $530 you get what you pay for. I use a Kinugawa Turbo and am very happy with it. It is good quality item. There are a few different model choices on ebay for diesels but you should at least have a look. They recommended which one I should use and they were spot on. I get engagement at 1600rpm but mine is lpg/petrol. With different manifold say a good one made from steam pipe you might get engagement at 1200rpm. Not sure how good these type of manifolds are and how well they cope with the heat. Another manifold which I believe are very good are 'Turboglide'.

Turbos is a hard one when on a budget.
The Kawabunga ones would be the only turbo id chose if on a budget.
Have you looked at GCG Turbos website?
