One Saturday back in 1995 I rode from Hobart to Queenstown just to watch a game on that oval. Ulverstone were the visitors. Cant remember who won but I was amazed they played as hard as hell and didn't worry about the gravel!! Didn't have the blood rule back then which was good coz probably half the players had claret coming out somewhere!!

Fantastic water saving initiative.

Yeah it's such a precious commodity around those parts lol.

I think the real reason is because the grass wouldn't grow in such a cold dark wet place. The oval would be a continuous mud patch with only a few tiny tufts of reeds and moss.

Even better, the gravel goes straight onto the concrete bike track around the edge.
