I'm thinking they joined 2 straps like MR suggested with a shackle and one eye failed in a big way
and we know what happened next,
The bit that makes me angry is this kid has an up hill struggle now through no fault of his own

I believe from reading comments it was shackled to the tongue of the towbar and the towbar tongue broke. Could be wrong but have read comments from a bloke who was there in Facebook

Hey tod you didn't merge mate? Only the 1st 2 posts went over? Given this is current new today is be happy to leave this until there is an outcome. Although I'd prefer no one ever got hurt and there was nothing to learn I reckon having a few threads like this scattered can't be a Bad thing?

Does anyone have any real news on this young bloke?
    Its a Nissan! =====> Its a Keeper!! ....... Got a TD42 in it BONUS!! ....... I'm a lucky bugger! I've got 2 of em!

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

I was going to merge but didn't end up merging any, it will become one big mess due to the dates on the other threads.

    I've reopened both threads

Very sad. As soon as I saw it I assumed another tow ball recovery gone pearshaped. But it wasn't, although just as tragic.
It's amazing how many keyboard warriors are all over it on FB with comments like... "This is why 4x4-ing should be banned and tracks, shut etc...." . Very annoying when un-informed people throw their 2 cents in like that.

Wouldn't of really made any difference in this case, if it is where I believe it 2 of happened it is illegal 2 be in there anyway.

Don't even think there is a legal place in Sydney 2 4wd these days

Shutting down tracks is not the answer, maybe if they actually had some legal 4wd park in Sydney accidents like this might not occur

Hope he hangs in there and makes a full recovery

    Not quite right, Cobber...

The weakest link is the 8,000 Kg strap.
The 4.75t rating on a shackle is WLL for a lift.
The actual BS of a 4.75t rated shackle will be 18,000 Kg to 30,000 Kg depending on grade.

At our committee meeting tonight we where discussing this and if the shackle is properly rated it should have a true breaking limit 7 times the stated amount. I think this is how they are rated for rigging. Happy to be corrected if info I was given is wrong. Mind you, with so much recovery gear coming out of China now and so many brands do we really know what is the true strength of these units.
