Sprayed a bit of water on the belt this morning and for a second it went away, then became very high pitched , and eventually went away.

Take the belt off and check the idler pulley wheel bearing, see if its got any play. Check the alternator pulley too. Also the shocker mounts might have worn out enough for movement to make the belt loose enough. But I doubt it. My guess its just the belt or the shocker on the tensioner has lost its mojo. But since this only happened from the last trip. It will be the belt I reckon. You should keep a spare belt with you anyway mate. As if that breaks, you won't be going anywhere.

I have all the part number for this somewhere...

I will buy a new one today.
If it let's go... Apart from being stranded , can it cause any damage like throw something out of sync ???

With mine, I had the dealer look at it at the last service, and they told me the tensioner was fine, but I had to bring it back and leave it overnight for them to look at it first up in the morning, even though I had a clear video of the noise, which sounds exactly like belt noise to me.

I never got around to taking it back to them and leaving it overnight, as that is the biggest pain in the arse for me ..... I have a spare genuine Nissan belt and tensioner anyway in the back. I was going to change the belt to confirm that this was the noise but now it is too late with the weather warmed up ..... I'll just leave it till next year ( or the next service where they tell me my tensioner is shagged, but it is now out of warranty ... )

I had the exact same issue, on a cold start there was a squeaking noise and it would go away as the engine warmed up. Spoke to the dealer and they asked for the Patrol to be left with them.

They changed the belt and the noise has gone away.

Well, replaced the tensioner today, after it was left over night and they are confident thats what it was when she started this morning. Will see what happens tomorrow morning.
