The term "a cut above the rest" comes from 200yrs ago when timber was cut in pits in the UK.
One guy would stand underneath and the other on top, thus the term a cut above the rest.
"Not enough room to swing a cat" goes back to the Tall ship days,
when a wayward sailor was flogged with a cat-n-nine tails
hence the term
