GU shorty rear axle oil leak.

Hi guys

Hopefully a question which has a quick and easy answer...

My shortie is leaking diff oil on the rear drivers side. Is it a straightforward job to replace the two seals? Do I have to replace the bearing as well or can I get to the inner seal without removing the bearing from the cage? The bearing seems fine, no wheel movement or noises so would rather not replace it unless it's necessary. Also I guess, will the diff oil have compromised the bearing and I should replace it anyway?

The bearing is pressed on and a bugger to get off. it is likely to be the inner seal and therefore simple to replace. The rear wheel bearing is pressed onto the axle and will come out with the axle.

Thanks. According to the service manual you need a special tool to get the shaft out. I'm guessing it's just a slide hammer, but if I don't have one, does it come out relatively easily or any suggestions?

I know this is an old Thread, but I was wondering if you could repack the bearing while on the shaft. Maybe you could inject the grease into them. I am going to have to change my rear seals and was looking for an alternative to changing the bearings. Thanks

Davo, I've used a syringe with very thin tube to inject grease into the bearings. Worked very well.
