EGR Plate for a 2010 GU CRD , does drilling a hole through it defeat the purpose?

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering peoples opinions on 2 things -

Excuse my ignorance (i am female with some mechanical knowledge but not as much as i need.) I just bought this car and i want to make it reliable and make it last for a long time.

1. Does a Nissan Patrol 2010 GU CRD 3.0 really need an EGR plate? I can't damage the engine by installing one can i?

2. If yes, from what i can see there are 2 types of plates you can buy, one with a hole through the middle and one without. From my understanding if you install the one without the hole in the middle it will keep your engine light permanently on? in which case if there if there is something wrong with the engine, you may not pick up on it?
On the other hand if you install one with a hole drilled through the middle, it stops the engine light coming on, but it still lets exhaust gases through anyway, which then does it mean its not doing its job?

Why would you fark around with a good CRD motor!
I know others will have different opinions but I would leave it the way it is.

I have tried an EGR block and it did not work for me as it created a lot of overboost issues

On the other hand a heap of people have had success in blocking the EGR withouth any isses.

I found the beaudesert exhaust to be best mod for performane

Hi Renee and welcome to the forum. For your car there is two plate as you mentioned. The only one you need is the one without the hole. As far as I am aware, no check engine light comes on but if you have a scan gauge hooked up to your ECU it will show a fault code saying that your EGR valve is not working. Pretty much no one uses the plate with the hole in it for the CRD's.
As for you question 1. Every Diesel engine should have the EGR blocked, period. The EGR causes more problems for your engine, such as choking your air intake manifold with dirty oily soot from the exhaust. Eventually your intake manifold, pipes, get smaller and smaller from soot build up. Not good. But hey its good for the environment. Bare in mind that blocking the EGr is an illegal mod and if your car is under warranty and you get it service by Nissan, they will find it when they do a service as they will plug in their machine to your ECU and the error will show. Then they will note that this mod has been done for any future warranty work that may arise. But I wouldn't let this stop me from blocking the EGR.
The EGR with the hole, while its still blocking the exhaust gases, its really only slowing it down. Not blocking it totally.
The choice is yours at the end of the day, but the plate without the hole is number 1. Overboost issue may come arrise but is easily fix with a Dawes and a needle valve, and you will see more performance gain too.

IMHO the EGR blanking plate is an excellent albeit illegal mod for the CRD.
You will be amazed at how much cleaner it keeps the oil, drops EGT's etc BUT unfortunately it is not a stand alone Mod.

Either with or without a hole the plate will affect the boost settings on the engine and you will need to either adjust your Turbo as per the "Bible" on this site OR fit a Dawes and Needle Valve manual boost controller.
I chose to adjust the Turbo on mine, simple but fiddly.

If you fit one without a hole it will cause random illumination of the Check Engine light.
I chose to fit one without a hole.
The code will be P0401 - EGR something or other.
The light will stay on until reset by a Scantool.
Mine would set a code and illuminate the light about once a fortnight on average but would maybe go for a month then do it 2 or 3 times in a week.

I purchased a Scangauge for under $200 and it is the absolute best thing for the CRD's as it is about 14 odd instruments in one plus a trip computer etc.
There are heaps of threads on here about Scangauges or similar.
If you get an engine light you can immediately check the code and if it is P0401 reset the computer to extinguish the check engine light.

My vehicle was leased and fully serviced by Nissan for 5 years who never picked up on the mod.
On one occasion last year it faulted and set the Code on a post service test drive by the mechanic.
Nissan recorded it on the Vehicle Service Records as 'False code caused by customers 3 inch after market exhaust' and said to me 'Don't worry about i't.

Disclaimer... for some reason known only to God not every car reacts exactly the same to these mods but a large majority will do as above to a greater or lesser degree

Geez your lucky ET about Nissan only recording it as a because of the big pipe. A Young kid up the street blocked his EGR on his brand new Navara, took it to Nissan for a service, Saw the fault code, had a gander and spotted the plate. You win some and lose some hey?

If you wish to be a Toyota owner some of their motors require the hole in the EGR plate.

Apart from being illegal, it's a no brainer.
My experience. Egts dropped, egts cool down quicker, noticeably cleaner oil during changes. Boost is easily managed with some manual boost management ( which i recommend installing regardless of egr block or not )as Mudski mentioned, if that becomes a problem.
I have the code pop up. But no engine light.

Really it's like quitting smoking. Your crd will thank you for it.

I'm buggered if I know how they leapt to the conclusion it was the 3 inch exhaust.

I've seen a few posts same as that.
I totally believe you however the cars I have seen in the flesh throw the light as well.
Maybe there is a difference in some models, or from a certain MY, who knows.

All I can say is over the years mine never threw a P0401 code without the light or vice versa.
It is not as if EGR is critical so I don't see the logic of throwing the Check Engine light so if it doesn't do that in later vehicles it makes sense
