The corrosion appears to be at the soldered joint which posers the question as to now good the original job was. Good soldering depends on how clean the joints were and if the joint was fluxed properly. A small bit of dirt , iron filing ,or swarf trapped in the joint can cause electrolysis , rust and corrosion.

Not just at the soldered joint. Now that I've fitted the new one, I thought I'd look a bit more closely at the old. Not sure what sort of metal it is, but it sure ain't copper. Polishes up on a wire wheel to a brass colour, but I suspect it is a 'pot metal' amalgam. I *very* lightly tapped on the patches of scale with a small bolt & as you can see in the pic, more holes appeared. I think we were lucky to discover it when we did. Would've done a lot of damage if it had let go when we were away.
