spotlights/lights bars

Hi bit of a nob questions was just wondering is it illegal to mount some spotlights ontop of the bulbar? also had someone tell me that no lights are allowed to be mounted on a car higher then 1.5 meters high, so would this make light bars mounted on the roof racks illegal?

also heard that your not allowed more then 6 lights on the front of a car.

I no each state has different laws im in Melbourne vic.

Any help would be great.

Two on the bar.
Five on the roof rack.
Never been asked about them.

On top of the bar, you might be able to get away with a light bar, but spotties would make you a target for a PO PO.
I have heard that all spot lights must be in pairs.
So my five on the roof may not exactly be right.

Somewhat off topic but may be of use to some.I heard of some new rules in NSW regarding light bars.
They must not be switched through high beams and only to be used off road-if used on road fines will apply.

I haven't heard and I am in the wrong state, but does make sense cos some light bars have ridiculously blinding light.

But if used in the same manner as your high beams I don't see why this would be an issue obviously you would dim your lights earlier when running brighter lights than standard high beams, and I think you will probably find every state say spots/ bars must dim with high beams.

The last I heard, you are correct in that it is illegal to have a light bar on your roof rack and the max number of lights is 6, with spotlights having to be in pairs.

Having said that, I have also heard the light bar issue is before the legislative body, in an effort to sort out the confusion?!?

I have 4 spot lights on my roof rack and have never been hassled about it. Yah only time I got pulled over was to advise me that because my 35" tires were 10mm outside the guards, I may be pulled over and ticketed...

All my spotlights and the light bar on my bumper are independently switched so that they can be set to turn on and off with the high beam or switched on alone.

Not getting "hassled" for a certain modification, is not very relative to its legality !

Almost sounds like the guys with illegal HIDs, who always seem to justify them because "ive never been flashed by oncoming traffic once".(haha)





According to Australian Design Rules (ADR 13/00), Driving Lamps do not have a specific height limit, but orientation must be "towards the front" of the vehicle.


The driving lamps must be able to be lighted only when the main-beam headlamps switch is in the “lamps on” position.


Number of driving lamps is 2 or 4.




Of course, having only 2 huge spot lights on top of your bull bar, may well just meet ADR 13/00 requirements for spot lights, but will most likley fail other ADRs, for things such as visibility , protrusions or pedestrian safety etc.

Then there is Australian Standards, people often overlook these requirements, instead getting caught up in ADRs.

So unless your state has special exemptions or requirements, you will most likely at least have to meet ADRs and A/S.

You haven't have less than 6 driving lights and they have to be even.
So 4 lights and a central light bar is fine..

Lights have to be forward of the driver, and this is defined by the dash, not drivers position.

Now you can have unlimited work lights, but then work lights can't be facing forward..

In saying that I've never heard if anyone being done just for lights.. It's always a list of things and they throw petty things in for good measure...

So imo if you have a subtle setup you'll be fine..

Westy, I think you may find the maximum of "6" driving lights will include your factory high beam, in QLD we are now allowed to count a single light bar as two spotlights, so we can have a pair of spotlights, and one or two light bars, instead of previously having to have all lights in matching pairs , as per ADRs.

The "maximum" number of lights has still not changed.(QLD)
