A friend who has made many desert crossings has a nice memento of his first. (Could've been the Simpson, but I'm not sure). He collected a small quantities of sand, & stored the samples in numbered plastic bags. Once home he carefully filled an attractive glass jar with the samples in order, giving multiple layers of different sand colours, some subtley different, some strikingly different.
