Fuel Filter what the

G'day folks

Time to change out the fuel filter on the TD42ti. Popped the bonnet today to have a gander at the filter to see what needs to be done. The primer is awfully hard to move and I see no fuel air bleed on the primer pump.

Oky doky try to turn the primer nob to see if it releases. Hmmph that don't work. Hmm off to the shed to have a gander at me new Max Ellery. Find in amongst me porn stash oops me receipe books. All it says amongst other things is pump primer until hard to bleed air.

Well that tells me to get a can of goodness from the bar fridge an have a think and sip. Shite that's no good all I will end up doin is more sippin than thinkin.

OK this is what I am thinkin The pump is hard to move because there is no air in system and hence full of fuel, The pump will free up once filter or fuel line is removed. To get air out of system open fuel air bleeder on injector pump or just pump primer until hard start engine to bleed air through injectors. Am I a smart cooky or just a dumb arse.

Nah mate, don't make it too hard.

Easy as.

Remove the hose from both sides and get out of the way.

Use the primer pump to pump the fuel ut of the filter into a container.

Disconnect the loom plug from the bottom.

Undo the 2 bolts (12mm I think) from the mount so you can completely remove the filter attached to the priming pump.

Now don't go anywhere. Invert the whole thing and bolt it back on to the mount Up Side Down.

It's now in a vice and ready to be undone

Using your oil filter wrench undo the filter. Loosen the filter.

Undo the mounting bolts and invert and remove the filter and then fully empty it of fuel and check for contaminants.

Rub a little fuel onto the new filter O ring and fit to the bracket hand tight only.

Mount into the correct position.

Attach the supply hose from the tank to the primer. Prime with the container in place and continue to prime until you have a nice stream of fuel.

Attach the hose from the primer to the pump and the loom plug.

Prime again until its a solid prime.

Start the car and packup the tools.

If you do as above you will not have to bleed the fuel pump or injectors. Happy days.

But was I a smart cooky in thinkin the reason I can't move the primer pump is because there is no air in system. When I popped the bonnet today I couldn't budge the plunger.

Figured when I remove the fuel lines from both sides I will then be able to move the plunger

I must be a lazy #@%& cause all I do is fill the new filter up then screw it on,just take it off where it is...but like I said I'm lazy,i run the car afterwards it runs rough for a second but sorts itself out.

went through about 5 filters relatively quick last yr when I got sh!t in my tank,i did this on the road a couple of times till I got around to dropping my tank and cleaning it.

The runnin rough bit will be the air being purged out through the injectors.Thinkin in adition to Mudrunner's way of fittin new filter I will fill new filter before screwin it on by the look of the plunger would be real short stroke probably take quite a few strokes if ya know what I mean ( for all you dirty minded shits out there he he ) to prime.

Nah not lazy at all. I have found if the filter has been there a while in can be really bloody tight mate. If you can undo it in position then go for it. I have a Delphi on my GQ with the glass bowl and don't undo the bracket but find the GUIV gets bloody tight and not allot of room so undo and easy as.

Yeah Gary if you have spare diesel at hand fill its up. I don't generally so just pump away. Does not take that long.
