Westys - 1hd-ft is in 80s. Mechanical. 4 valves per cylinder. Direct injection diesel. 1hd-fte is in 100s. Same engine with more standard power but computer controlled.

Dont get me wrong, love the nissans, but toyota have always been ahead in their engines.

The 80's had a 1hdt to start with which was basically a turboed 1hz (a 1hz is no superior to a td42.) Then they went to the ft which had larger diameter crank (mains etc) to fix the bearing issue of the turboed 1hz (1hdt). Then the electronically controlled (timing only same as the later 4.2tdi) 1hd-fte, which is a nice motor but I have not seen anyone push one past the 200rwkw mark, it could be possible but I haven't seen it documented.

The td42 on the other hand can achieve 240rwkw (around 340hp) and has been done a few times and documented. I even know a bloke running 220rwkw daily out of one.

Yes Toyota do nice motors, they always have, but Toyota builds things like that "nice". They are great when in standard trim and will last as long as any Nissan engine, it's when the modifications start that Nissan start to come into their own. Nissan might not be as nice or as good power output wise standard but they are rugged, tough and reliable. Horses for courses though. I haven't seen any diesel ( not to say there isn't) Toyota powered vehicles competing in winch challenges/ 4wd events, (most are Nissan or v8 powered).

As for the conversion it's been done, but would be a headache IMO.

Dont ever consider the new (reasonably) V8 Toymota diesel. There is a couple of tech's at the Toymota dealer up here working full time replacing/rebuilding them. They are making the old Nissan 3L motors look really good.

I asked this on behalf of my mate who wanted to put a V8 D4D out of a 76 series. Even though he had a perfect engine, he's done his homework and the cost / engineering costs far outweigh the cost of a fully re-built and fitted 4.2TD turbo. He's now happy as ever. The money he got for the engine covered majority of the cost for the 4.2 .
Mind you this was in relation to a D4D V8. Some other yota engines might be easier to slot in.
