So are there any obvious things to look for when inspecting a patrol to purchase? Any known things I should be aware of, or look for to look for signs of abuse, or things that would get me pinged by the police in QLD, like too high a lift kit or things like that?

    Welcome.

To be safe from Police attention, max tyres 33, spring lift 2" and no body lift. - unless the truck has mod plates.

Once you get a truck, join a 4wd club to learn the basics.

never go 4wd by your self - go with others.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. A mate of mine at work has a GQ for sale, well not really, but he has too many trucks so sort of was planning on selling his GQ wagon. It has been to the cape and back twice in it, and he is the second owner, the first was a local central QLDer. So it has a roof camper, bullbar with winch, onboard water, onboard air, onboard fridge, 2" lift etc etc etc. I am not too sure with the year yet or kms. It is a petrol though, and I was kind of hoping for a diesel. But it is an OK price, at ~$7,000 so it'll be a nice entry level into 4x4ing I think. Going to borrow it next weekend for a test run, see how the family likes it and give it a mechanical once over.

Are there any specifics I should be looking at first? Although I reckon it'll be a very well looked after truck, as if he treats it anything like how he treats the things he works on at work, then it should be in very good condition. A mate of mine was talking td42 conversion if I really wanted to, but for $4-5,000 that is a LOT of petrol. But if it is something I plan on owning for the long term, then it might be something I consider down the line after I'm happy with the base. Doing the conversion also means I'll get to know a lot more about the inner workings of the beast and not just the basics.

    G'day mate,
Welcome to the forum......heaps of good info.
To get a much better response to your questions mate, post up in an appropriate section of the forums, more people will see it there.
In short, a '98 GU for 7-8k is waaaaaay too cheap, I would be running a mile from that.
As for the GQ, if you want a diesel and have $20k to spent, you will enjoy a very nice TD42.
Petrol is fine, I drive a TB42 GQ and it goes ok. I like it but would ultimately like a diesel more. For my needs, I wasn't prepared to fork out the extra coin for the diesel.......I might one day though.
Pick of the engines in my opinion in GQ's are the TD42 (#1) and the TB42 (#2)......
