    RB30 motor dead

my motor died the other day , so looking for a new one , is it easier to go with a skyline EFI motor or go diesel? i have found a few RB30 skylines for under 1.5K , found one that claims to only have 100,000km on it , so I am thinking this might be the go. What do ppl think?

If you were happy with the last engine then id go an rb30 again for ease of fitting. Like you said, it would be better to go with an efi one for slight power and economy gains. And even better, it would be ready to slap a turbo on:-).

X @ tend to agree with Lucas, just for the ease of changing motors, and knowing all things will join up.
Headache free, way too many things to change going from ULP to Diesel.

I'm Interested to hear what killed your motor, and how many ks were on it, thanks, Bubba.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

    Do you have a rb30?

Is it a carby of efi?

If you are converting to efi then a skyline is eaiser as the efi loom is separate - vl loom has all the dash bits as well.

A second hand rb30 - vl or skyline from the wrecker is around 400. Looms are extr - don't forget the intank fuel pump.

Note the vl & skline dizzys are different -

You could also get the rb30 and swap the bits off your dead motor - sump, dipstic position, flywheel clutch (I would replace - vl is the same as a gq rb30), alt, pullys, dizzy inlet manifold, also consider doing the timing belt while you have the donk out
1991 GQ LWB 4.2 Carby dual fuel, 32 mud claws, 2 inch lift, LSD's front and back

And its Toooooooo High for the Ball & chain

mine is a RB30, carbied, i have yet to pull the motor out to look at it but there is a big hole in the side of the block, guessing that i have distoyed a piston and the conrod has punched through , the motor had at least 300,000km on it the odomitor has not been working for some time and it is just over 300,000km on it so maybe closer to 400,000km

When installing the new engine make sure you do the timing belt and set the cam timing as a skyline rb30 not as a vl rb. The skyline runs 1 tooth advance over the vl and produces more low down torque when set up that way

I now have the motor out of the patrol and it appears that the big end bearing on number4 was dry so the bearing ceased and the conrod was distoyed and punched the hole in the side of the block. while hopefully have the skyline motor in b4 Chrissy
