Best way is to bend over from the back and stick as you described earlier.
I tried making an insert with this stuff yrs ago.
hard to do and keep it neat/straight.
but you still need to fix it in place, an insert is a hard to get a neat tidy look, not boy racer.
Humm, maybe using the piece you removed as a template.
and bending it over that may have a result.
you may have to trim it first to allow for the thickness of mesh for an insert, possibly to tight to fit.
can tell you now, an insert the sharp edges on mesh will scratch the grill on insertion if not extremely careful.
placement from behind will do less damage as cut ends go in last.
a flap disc on grinder would help remove sharp points
the process would proberly render the mesh piece useless for reuses if it doesn't work.
