mmm, I have seen a GU rechassised on to a GQ chassis before...so mechanically there is nothing in it. Therefor, toughness is just a matter of perspective, and how hard one is ready to push it. Ive seen more people ready to give a GQ heaps than their nicer, plusher, more expensive GU... I guess oce the newer models filter thru and GUs become cheaper the balance may change. Sadly it seems any model with 4.2 diesel engine is becoming more expensive, even GQs. Mqs however have pretty much bottomed out in value and can only go up as a result of becoming a classic at 30 plus years.mmm concessional rego here we come!
GQ Wagon 4.2 carb 4inch lift of the road resting
GU Rd28 Wagon 2 inch lift on the road now daily driver
D22 Navara ZD30- in rehab pending being moved on.

I just want to say that the patrol as a general rule is an awsome and tough truck right from the old me/mk in the 3.3 turbo diesel which I had as my first 4wd right too the last of the 4.8 and 4.2 gu's. it all depends on which engine/gear box/diff combo yours has. I have the first of the 4.8 auto ti's and I love it just wish it had 4.11 diffs with the h260.
Last weekend I crawled up rocky track in toolangi and my trol is stock standard although it did help that the ti's have the factory diff lock as standard and the auto played its part to. And to tell the truth I don't think I would have made it up in a gq and u really do have to remember the the gq's r lighter and for the queens where as the gu are fore the real GUys and that is where the q's and u's come from.
P.s. for every one that said that the gu is more comfy the the gq they are wrong. When I was younger my old man upgraded from the gq(maverick) to a brand new 1998 st manual gu and the first thing that I noticed was that the gu wasn't as comfy as the gq

the gq would have made it up the rocky track easy. All that track needs is a smooth throttle and the driver being aware of the wheel track and diff clearence to accomplish. its not really a hard track.

No lift, No lockers, No need lol

Ha ha, I have a 4.2 TD, and will never go for anything smaller now. A recent trip of 800ks, and done another 80ks on the same tank thanks to a few modifications, such as removing restrictive mufflers and disabling catalytic converter, vehicle has never gone better. As far as Im concerned I now have my perfect vehicle.

I think we would all agree that the one thing that let's the gu down is the 3l it's piss week and it blows up. But apart from that they both have thing for and a genst.
    Gu pro's:
    1. Engines: tb45 same but as the tb42i but bigger, tb48, both had the 2.8 but gu was electronically controlled, both had td42 but the gu had n/a a turbo and a turbo inter cooled version.
    2. Drive chain: gu has bigger axils and cv's, in the 4.8 you can get the 5 speed auto( should have been available on all engines).
    3.More luxuries
    4. I no not all of you are going to agree with me but the gu looks better and tougher
    5. Power steering box
    6. More models have the h260 diff in them
    7. You don't need to cut the guards to fit 35's

    Now the gq pro's:
    1. Lighter
    2. Has better head lights and tail light assembly
    3. Has stood the to the test of time
    4. Pre 1992 td42 had the toughest internals
    5. Real metal bumpers ( but even gq owners change these for bar work)
    6. Import had pto winch
    7. This one hurts but early gq's and some international gu's have detachable sway bars
    8. Td42 came in a auto
    9. ARB makes a high mount winch bar for them

    Gu cons.
    1. 3l engine
    2. Plastic bumpers
    3. 2.8 and 3l manual gear box
    4. Stupid people buying 3 litres( just because it was cheaper and nissan said that it was better on fuel but if you have to replace the engine all the time because of it blowing up then it really isn't that cheap is it).
    5. Nissan now only offers the 3l
    6. Panels bend and show mars easier( round bodie v square)
    7. Cost compared to the gq but still a lot better then the cruiser

If you can't tell I really do not like the 3 litre

    Gq cons:
    1. It's had to find one with out rust(like one of you gq guys said earlier, the gq will drive strait though a river crossing but the gu will flote. This is because of all the water which is inside the gq lmao)
    2. The carby tb42
    3. Weeker cvs
    4. Shit dash( to bad if you want a DVD player with GPS built into it because u can put it in but you want be able to see it.
    5. Noise
    6. Shit brakes
    7. You also had a ford badge on you and you will never be able to live that one down
    8. If you step out bush just about everyone has them( its the sheep factor)
    9. The early utes where basically a mq with the h260, gq front diff and the td42

I'm shore I have forgotten some points with both the gu and gq in the pro's and the con's so please add to my list and remember that at least we don't drive cruiser lol
Go you good thing, go the patrol!!!!

    Gu pro
    More leg room
    Con
    Less cargo area

    Gq pro
    More cargo area for beer
    Con
    Less leg room..

Who needs brakes in a gq anyway.. not like your going to find anything to hit that'll leave a mark.. unlike the gu, look at it in a abusive way and it wrinkles...
