Mounting a radio on top of my dash

I have been looking for a binnacle type box so I can mount my DVD screen radio/nav system on top of my dash.

My plan is to blank off the original double din sized hole in the center and use it as my switch panel as I'm using ARB type switches and they're too big to fit into the factory holes.

As I have several switches to fit, and several pilot lights (spot/spread/LED/roof/rear/awning/locker) I'd rather use that panel there and space them neatly.

Also, as it's a 7" fold out stupid thing, I think if I used the top slot, it would foul on my heater controls or the dash and it would look a bit stupid. Also, my dash is pretty knackered from being abused by previous owner fitting several different stereos and switches and breaking most tabs etc.

My main problem is it seems that the department of the interior is the only people who make this unit and it's bloody dear. They then want a further $20 or something to cut a din sized hole in it. Now, I'm sure the job they do is outstanding, but at around $500 plus freight, it seems too excessive.

I'm useless with wood, so I can't make one myself. I have a dash mat fitted and can have it covered in the same material as the dash mat to make it all look stock, so not worried about glassing/painting etc.

Essentially I need a wooden box made. Surely someone on the forum has done it, or can do it for a much better price than DoTI? I'm not in a massive hurry, but plan on doing my stereo in the next 3 months or so.

    Any ideas?

Could you use something like this ....

You could make some tapered sides so it does not appear so "box" like , then cover with dash mat/carpet ?

M2cW make a cardboard template of what you want, either take to cabinet makers to knock one up
or 2 go to a sheetmetal place, cover with thin foam an vynyl using contact cement

If he used a box, would heat be an issue for the electronics on the dash?
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Yeah, that looks perfect, 04. Just got to hope the freight to Aus isn't ridiculous now, or that I can find one in Aus.

Westy, I have a roof console that houses my cb. Plus it would be a PITA to keep looking up to check nav or if I use a DVD etc.

Not sure bout heat being an issue, my radio is seldom on, tbh. My CB's are active more than the radio and if there's enough airflow around it, I don't see it being an issue, but I may mount a 2" computer fan in either side, just for peace of mind.

A few types on egay as well...

Doubt you will have many issues with heat, but you could always look at where the heatsinks are on the head unit (normally at the rear), and put some extra holes in the plastic housing in that area, then cover with carpet, or speaker cloth etc.

Hmm, that's an idea, but I suppose by the time I make a template, buy the mdf, glue and carpet or vinyl, it's probably gonna cost me a few bucks at a cabinet makers anyway.

I think ill buy the egay single din unit, bit of foam under it, spray it with vinyl spray to match my cluster surround and be done with it for $20.
