    Turbo or not

looking at 1998 Patrols and some friends have said that because we will be using our Patrols a lot and we dont want to have another thing to fix on our 4x4s that it is better to not have a turbo... what do you guys think. i think it is the 4.2 without the turbo and if it had a turbo it would be a 2.5. questions on cost, performance, ability to tow and haul people, and petrol costs...

    Re: Turbo or not

    Yes to a turbo.
You don't need to have huge psi to make diesels preform.
And the 4.2 will last forever even with a turbo.

    Turbo or not

The 4.2 is a very strong reliable engine mate and will love the turbo. As mentioned even a low psi will do wonders to power, towing, economy, etc.

Best mod i have ever done, easy DIY install but get it tuned properly afterwards you'll never look back!!!

Is it a Petrol or a Diesel?

TD42 Diesel.....TURBO in a heart beat! No Brainer!
TB42 Petrol...... They go great but less common.
    Its a Nissan! =====> Its a Keeper!! ....... Got a TD42 in it BONUS!! ....... I'm a lucky bugger! I've got 2 of em!

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

To not have a turbo as its another thing to go wrong ............
Bit like saying get a push bike rather than a motor bike, cause well theres less to go wrong ........
Depending on exactly what your goin to do
Some prefer diesel n/a ,just good ol reliable that just chugs along, some go the turbo , like the improvements, and crank some boost in it,and that can cause issues with reliabilty and costs
Minimal boost is fine, anything over 10 PSI,throw a intercooler on
Diesel ,turbo ,cooled, like chalk and cheese compared to n/a diesel
the old diesels will handle fair/good turbo boost and go all day ,every day for years,if you dont go over board

Mod can cost rather varied depending on what you can do,or contacts you mite have
IF you pay a shop for full conversion drive in drive out, that will cost a good few grand maybe more, depending on what you get
Do a bitta reading around here, that doesnt cost anything , see what people have done and used and what does or doesnt work better
Its all goin to boil down to how much you can spend
