Yeah not hard to do. The mast on mine never went right down since I bought the car. I assumed that how they were until I was told otherwise. I took the whole thing out, by removing the inner guard then the whole thing is easy to get too and remove, I then pulled mine right apart, clean it out and now it works like a new one.
I reckon it would be quite hard to get the new rope in the motor without pulling it apart. As the rope curls up and if the teeth on the rope aren't exact you might end up destroying the teeth...
