I've been running a GME for a few years, seems solid and transmit/receive quality appears to be excellent. Just returned from 2 weeks in the bush and used it extensively to communicate with the other vehicle while exploring various tracks, never missed a beat. We were often a few k's apart and behind hills/ranges and signal was always good.
I do have a Ham license (easy to get these days) and also have a Yaesu FT7900r in my patrol. The transmit/receive quality is definitely superior to the consumer UHF radios. Having 50W available on the 7900 also helps get the signal out further I have a very nice 5W VHF/UHF Ham handheld to communicate with the 7900 when away from the vehicle. My entire family have Ham licenses. My youngest got his when he was 7yrs old (now 13).
In the US (where I live/work when not in Perth) a LOT of the landcruiser 4wd community have gone for their Ham licenses and run them in the 4wds. Price is not much different than consumer gear, but the performance/quality is MUCH superior. Of course in the US, the VHF/UHF repeater structure is incredible and they have mountain tops to install them, so the Ham infrastructure over here is amazing.
