Thanks this is a really good read. I have a question about the water crossing part though. On the very top of page 52 it says:
"If available, fit a snorkel extension to the engine air inlet and exhaust systems."
Has anyone ever heard of fitting an extension to the exhaust system when doing deep crossings e.g. cape york???? I know that you arent supposed to turn your engine off if you get bogged in a crossing because water can creep up your exhaust into your engine. If you fitted and extension, say a flexible hose or such to snorkel height would this mitigate this risk???
What does everyone think?
It would definitely help if you were unfortunate enough to get stuck and stalled in a deep crossing

Would it help enough to carry 2m of flexible 3" hose with you???
No I don't think so unless you had another use for the hose. Everything you carry on a big trip should have more than 1 use or is a luxury. On an average river crossing the idea is to keep moving and hold a constant speed to control the now wave. If this is under control then your moving, your revs are up and you have no trouble. If you have to sit in water then maybe up the revs a little but its just not ideal!
Make sure your snorkel is sealed as its the Vacuum side of the engine, use a car bra for crossing and respect the water and you will do fine.
