New Tyres

G'Day Guys,

I currently have BFG All Terrain 265 75 16 on my wagon, we are going to the cape next year and will be needing new tyres, should i go bigger tyres 285 75 16.

Any advice on brand, ive had a decent run out of the BFG's but wouldn't mind trying out another brand like Cooper STT's or Mickey T's, what do you's reckon,

Tyre size wouldn't be that critical, if your happy with 265s, BFG's good brand, not much chipping like a Simpson or Birdsville trip
suspension needs to be in A1 condition as it'll get a pounding, spare shocks etc.
Awesome trip did it in 83' , maybe next year as well

I just put 285/75R16 Micky T's 4RIB on Friday, it was a tough choice between that and the new Cooper.... But I've had a few people warn me off the cooper. The Micky T's are also rated best beach tyre. I went up Bribie yesterday, dropped the pressure down to 26psi and it went sensationally.

There's not a lot tyre noise from them on the highway.

Goodday , I have a 2005 wagon always used BFG AT ,s Thought I would change to Coopers to see if any better . I did not like them at all and have gone back to BFG AT,s. Believe me I have tested them on the most arduos roads and tracks and reckon they are the best . No highway noise as well . I expect to get 80000kms out of a set To the cape you will be blowing up and letting down quite a lot especially on corrugations and if it is wet .

I'd go larger, as long as it fits with your suspension set up, an inch more diff clearance makes a huge difference off road. I've had 3 sets of BFGs ATs and on two different trucks (Navara and GU) and couldn't fault them. However i've gone for the Mickey t's 4 rib on the new Patrol and they are, so far, very good. they are a bit noisy compared to the BFGs but they are more aggressive so that's to be expected. I think either way you'd be fine.

I had Mickey 4 ribs on my Pathfinder, little bit noisier but did the job well.Will probably go them again when these Coopers on my Patrol flog out.

Dollar for dollar the likes of the Mickey Ts and Coopers are somewhat overrated if you are using them for far more on than off road. If you are going to the Cape for a trip but your tyres will spend the rest of the time getting you to and from work then you might reconsider what you are paying for. For half the price of either, the likes of Maxxis, Yokohama Geolanders and Kumho all perform well. I have recently changed from Bridgestone Duellers to Maxxis 771s and was surprised at how well they performed both on and off road. I'm not saying that they were better than the Bridgies but they were certainly no worse and did the job well when needed. I feel that the likes of the Mickey Ts (ridiculously expensive and not even designed for Aussie conditions) are just so overhyped.

I've driven on Bridgestone Duellers and I reckon that my Maxxis 771s perform better on road and off road. The bridgies are probably a stronger tyre though

I have the Maxxis 285/70/17 on my 09 rig and they work well, M/T's are on the cards when coin permits
