early GQ leaf ute! as they generally have TD42, H260 rear diff and some even had drive flanges on the front diff instead of locking hubs.
The leaf rear also can carry more weight without the chassis failing. The OP asked for 'toughest' not most capable or comfy...

The 3l goes harder, and uses less fuel, but hook 2500 kg on the back the Gq feels much better and the TD42 is much slower but uses less fuel and is still going 500000kms later with one clutch not 15 like the GU will have.

the dinos died out because they couldn't keep up with the change in the world all you gq divers will be the same up the might gu having said that looks like nissan is taking a huge step back for the next patrol more like a kid on 4wd catering to the euro market of x5's and alike

The 'drive flanges' are the similar to the ones on the front of a full-time 80series, They are a fixed drive flange rather than a free wheel / locking hub. A standard nissan locking hub can only transmit ~4500 ft/lb, an auto lock ~3500-4500 depending on condition, an Aisin hub (toyota/mitsu/suzuki....) ~7500-8000ft/lb, nissan/toyota drive flanges ~7500+.
